Salt to Bitters
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

    Salt to Bitters
From lilt to lurch, from swagger to stagger, Salt To Bitters crashes its way across a bittersweet soundscape in fits and starts, tempering depravity with a tunefulness that could only have been born in the desperate hours between last call and first light. Tony T. Raver's moods range from wry to agonized, his alcohol-drenched musings on liquored-up love and the loss thereof emerging both poignant and raucous. His eclectic assemblage of Chapel Hill music veterans follow his every move with a funereal kaleidoscope of plinking banjo, mournful violin ribbons, ominous Rhodes piano, drums that shamble and crash. Formed in 2008, Salt To Bitters has carved its niche as the Triangle's foremost purveyors of late-night despair, playing a host of live shows a cross North Carolina.

New Town Drunks
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

New Town Drunks music has been described as New Vaudeville, Rock and Roll Cabaret, Stream of Consciousness Folk Rock, a musical Bonnie and Clyde and other less clear descriptions. At the core of it is the show-stopping voice and stage presence of lead singer Diane Koistinen, the versatile Spanish guitar of Roberto Cofresi and a batch of carefully crafted songs, but there is always more to every performance, melodrama, mystery, comedy, tragedy, surprises... and they always seem to find themselves in the company of great talent. Who will join them on stage at SXSW? Come to the No More Fake Labels showcase to find out.

Mass Solo Revolt
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

Michigander Martin Brummeler moved to Athens, GA in 2000 and began writing music under the moniker Mass Solo Revolt. His previous bands Data Cadet, and Propeller had released records in the late '90s on Fred Thomas'(Saturday Looks Good to Me) West West Side records and Joel Wick's (Michigan Fest) Makoto Recordings.
In 2005, Brummeler sent a recording to Silver Sonya Mastering in Washington, D.C.. It caught the ear of Dischord Records’ Ian MacKaye, who suggested a collaboration between Brummeler and Dismemberment Plan engineer/producer Chad Clark. Recruiting drummer Andrew Becker (Medications) and playing the rest of the instruments himself, Brummeler spent 2 weeks writing, recording, and sleeping on the Inner Ear couch. The result was the first "officially released" MSR album... EASY MARK. (self-released). The album garnered much critical praise including features on NPR and ALL MUSIC GUIDE among others. Martin actually ended up moving to D.C. for a year (2006) to work at Inner Ear and Silver Sonya as an engineer and producer. Moving back to Athens in 2007, Brummeler went to work on the 2nd MSR album with longtime friend and musical partner Jim Frye. Self-recording and producing in his home studio, and including the good friends he'd pressed into service as touring bandmates (Jim Frye, David Harrison, and Russell Sherman), in both writing and performance on the album. This sophmore effort, BEND IN TIME, (released in 2009 on Hop Skip Recordings) was also well-received in the press, and furthered Mass Solo Revolt's reputation as masters of “sonically muscular, rhythmically angular and effortlessly melodic-guitary, poprock-n-roll of the superbestest kind”.
2010 found Brummeler and bandmates dealing with adult issues like unemployment, foreclosures, and 3 year olds... Brummeler moved home to Michigan, and scrapped a live band in place of a sampler, allowing him to perform with all the bombast of a live group, without the human bullshit involved in keeping a band together. A new association with Chapel Hill anti-label NO MORE FAKE LABELS has already brought more attention (see his GBV cover on the label's "Sing For Your Meat:A Tribute to Guided By Voices", and read about his killer set performed at this year's CMJ Music Festival) to the man/band oft-called "the greatest 90's band not actually from the '90s".

Jon Lindsay
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

Jon Lindsay has been on a pretty incredible tear since emerging on the national indie rock scene in 2010. After going solo in 2009 from prominent roles in several well known bands (most notably Benji Hughes and The Young Sons), the Oregon-born, North Carolina raised singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist released 2 critically acclaimed EP's, a stunning debut LP (2010's "Escape From Plaza-Midwood"), AND a debut LP "Rumormill" for his side band, The Catch Fire, all while playing upwards of 150 national shows between 2010 and 2011.

Joy Kills Sorrow
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

Some people prefer pop music that behaves like math: once a few familiar variables have been determined—female vocals or male? Acoustic guitar or electric? — the end result should be easy to predict, and always sound the same. That’s not the Joy Kills Sorrow method. This Boston-based string band favors a more unpredictable approach relying on musical chemistry and improvisation. Hence the title of their sophomore album, This Unknown Science. All of the members have been touted as virtuosos, and they effortlessly hunt for unexpected outcomes and new discoveries. “We like experimenting and stretching boundaries,” explains guitarist Matthew Arcara, an acoustic player gaining a name for himself as both an up-and-coming guitar slinger and luthier. Arcara has taken home several honors at various guitar competitions including Winfield’s National Flatpicking Championship in 2006.

Lake Street Dive
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)
Classic soul and R&B, jazz, and British invasion form the backdrop for the quirky and irreverent brand of pop for which Lake Street Dive has become known. Combine this with the unstoppable joy of their live shows and near viral collection of Youtube videos, and you get the sum of the Lake Street Dive equation: pure pop music fun. Knock- your-socks-off vocals and virtuosic instrumentals top it all off, and with the release of their third and self titled record on Signature Sounds, which Popmatters calls “a staggering, monumental disc,” this Brooklyn based quartet is garnering a growing fan base in and beyond their native East Coast. Incorporating the unlikely elements of upright bass and jazz-inflected trumpet along with more traditional rock staples, drum set and electric guitar, Lake Street Dive are equally at home in a jazz club, a dive bar or a festival stage.

The Sweetback Sisters
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)
Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models. Like the artists they admire, the Sweetbacks are concerned with the traditional subjects of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong, albeit with a contemporary sensibility. “We’re a renegade retro band that mixes up country, swing and honky tonk,” explains Bode. “Sometimes what we deliver is straight out of the 50s; other times it’s BR549 meets The B52s.”

Wild Moccasins
    Thursday March 15, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

With a collection of songs that web male-female vocals of couple Zahira Gutierrez and Cody Swann, as well as pop-infused percussion and string work, Wild Moccasins, a quintet of 20-somethings from Houston, TX, offer a sound that balances a musical guile beyond the band’s years.
Wild Moccasins are perhaps best known in their native Texas for their uncanny ability to sell-out live shows. The mere release of their EP, Microscopic Metronomes & then Full Length, Skin Collision Past, actually resulted in some significant amount of press noting how they are one of the few local acts that have no trouble selling out a show.
The explanation behind their passionate fan base can be found in the one aspect of Wild Moccasins that is most prevalent: their energy. The passion for music that all five members emit both in the studio and on the stage is one to marvel at.

Two Cow Garage
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)
Two Cow Garage's newest album, “Sweet Saint Me”, picks up where their previous, “Speaking In Cursive”, left off but the album seems more focused and the songwriting could not be better. The album mixes rockers and acoustic tracks alike and hits home the fact that Two Cow Garage are becoming one of the greatest rock bands in America. Sure, I am biased, but if you have been following the guys since the beginning, you have most certainly noticed that the band has slowly forged their own sound (out of their alt-country humble beginnings) and have put together one of the most thunderous live sets you will ever see. "Sweet Saint Me" boasts the strongest collection of songs Two Cow Garage have put together.

Wiretree began as the solo recording project of singer-songwriter Kevin Peroni. After releasing the LP "Bouldin" in 2007, Peroni recruited other band members solidify the project. The group released their sophomore effort "Luck" in 2009, finding it's way on various year-end best of lists (Blurt, Absolute Powerpop) while being labeled Blurt Magazine's "Best Kept Secret." In 2010 the band landed an official SXSW showcase in Austin. KLRU featured the band on Austin City Limit's "Satellite Sets" in early 2011. Wiretree recently supported their current release with a European tour and performing at the Loop Festival with Josh Rouse. Austin Monthly and Texas Music Matters both labeled the band as “Artist to Watch” for 2012.

Language Room
    Sunday March 18, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)
After both moving from Los Angeles to Austin in search of a greater music community, old friends Scott Graham and Todd Sapio, who literally bumped into each other in the middle of Sixth St. during South By Southwest, began hashing out song ideas in the spring of ‘07. After a few solid rehearsals, Scott suggested that his brother Matt, who had already been living in Austin, should sit in on bass. Matt, who was not normally a bass player, brought a different, more melodic approach on the bass that fit in perfectly. Their manager at the time, Dustin Laycock, brought in Coloradoan session player Caleb Kelly on drums after their current drummer literally vanished the day before an important gig. Behind his “Ringo kit,” Caleb conjured his signature thunderous groove for the three Houston-bred boys, and the band had found their sound.
