SXEncore: Phillip The Fossil
    Friday March 9, 2012 7:00pm - 8:13pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

*SXSW 2012 SXEncore screenings were determined by popular vote on Tugg.com. An aging party animal chases the now extinct glory days of his youth. Blowing lines, strip clubs, and pawing barely legal girls are all part of his endless summer. He chuckles along as the carefree town jester, but beneath this suffocating guise Phillip feels increasingly isolated. When an old love returns home and the opportunity to run his own landscaping business knocks, he must first ditch the insecure seventeen year-old that’s been his shadow. Dealing with her jealous, steroid-pumping ex and a best friend with an acutely hostile form of PTSD, it isn’t long before Phillip gets tangled in a tornado of violence.

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters
    Sunday March 11, 2012 5:00pm - 6:17pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters follows the acclaimed photographer’s decade-long quest to create a series of haunting, surreal, and stunningly elaborate portraits of small-town American life. His photographs are like single-frame movies — partly because each composition brims with narrative, partly because he uses cinematic tools such as special effects, hundreds of lights, and huge crews of technicians. As we travel with him — from first inspirations, through countless creative and logistical obstacles, to the instant where all the elements coalesce in a single perfect moment — we realize that, despite their vast scale, Crewdson’s images grow from his most intimate dreams and fantasies.

The Austin Chronicle recommends this event in "Art as Acts of Subversion and Immersion: 'The Sheik and I,' 'Trash Dance,' and 'Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters'." Read the full feature here.

Indie Game: The Movie
    Sunday March 11, 2012 7:00pm - 8:36pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of artist: the indie game designer. These innovators design and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they may find connection and success. After years of work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes work toward the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy. At a big video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, FEZ. Designer Jonathan Blow considers a new game after his very successful game, Braid. Four developers, three games, one ultimate goal— to express oneself through a video game.

    Sunday March 11, 2012 9:30pm - 10:55pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

Determined to honor his father’s scouting legacy and mount one last comeback for his dwindling troop, Assistant Scoutmaster Randy Stevens (Patton Oswalt) pays a visit to his business-minded brother Kirk (Johnny Knoxville), who is throwing a television-themed slumber party for his newly adopted 10-year-old son at his McMansion. Randy pressures the boys to secretly ditch the party and join him on a weekend scout trip. Pursued by Kirk and his security guard (Rob Riggle), the adventure lands the boys in trouble at every turn, pits them against angry parents and park rangers, yet ultimately turns the group of sheltered kids into a troop to be reckoned with.

“WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. "Safety Not Guaranteed". I have only done this once before.” When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes he’s solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon. Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you.

WE ARE LEGION: The Story of the Hacktivists
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 5:00pm - 6:29pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

"WE ARE LEGION: The Story of the Hacktivists" takes us inside the world of Anonymous, the radical "hacktivist" collective that has redefined civil disobedience for the digital age. The film explores early hacktivist groups like Cult of the Dead Cow and Electronic Disturbance Theater, then moves to Anonymous' raucous beginnings on the website 4chan. Through interviews with current members, people recently returned from prison or facing trial, writers, academics, activists and major players in various "raids," the documentary traces Anonymous’ evolution from merry pranksters to a full-blown movement with a global reach, the most transformative civil disobedience of our time.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:45pm - 10:50pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)
"WONDER WOMEN! The Untold Story of American Superheroines" traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, WONDER WOMEN! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. "WONDER WOMEN!" goes behind the scenes with Lynda Carter, Lindsay Wagner, comic writers and artists, and real life superheroines such as Gloria Steinem, Shelby Knox and others who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male dominated superhero genre.

The Taiwan Oyster
    Thursday March 15, 2012 7:00pm - 8:55pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

After the tragic death of a newly arrived Ex-pat, ESL kindergarten teachers Simon and Darin, steal the corpse in order to perform the final rites for the fallen stranger. Their quest for the perfect burial spot becomes a quixotic odyssey along Taiwan's picturesque East Coast Highway, where they encounter welcoming families, violent gangsters, personal demons, and Nikita, their traveling companion. The duty, transport, and dementia fueled by frequent substance abuse, ignites an internalization in all three characters as they define their personal feelings concerning mortality, purpose, burial rites and the concept of legacy.

Lost and Sound
    Friday March 16, 2012 7:30pm - 8:46pm @ SXSatellite: Alamo Slaughter (5701 W Slaughter Ln, Austin, TX 78739)

Lost and Sound is a moving creative documentary, made by a partially deaf filmmaker. It weaves its way through a startling world of sound and silence, via the ears and brains of three extraordinary people as they try to rediscover music: a dancer deaf since birth, a young pianist who lost her hearing as a baby, and a music critic facing sudden partial deafness. Music is one of the greatest of all human experiences; millions of us fall under its spell every day, and it engages more parts of the brain than any other human activity. But what if you lost the ability to hear it? Could you find music again... could music find you?
