Brought together by the power of the internet (and perhaps a touch of musical providence), Cincinnati-based computer programmer int eighty and Manchester-area graphic designer c64 have been rocking the more studious side of the hip-hop underground since 2007. Their debut release Zero One – featuring Counter-Strike anthem “Hostage Down” and club banger “Give Me Wings” – was summarily embraced by the tech set as a welcome shift in the contemporary hip-hop paradigm.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)

MC Lars makes intellectual indie hip-hop music backed by live instruments and video projection screens. He has been touring non-stop since 2003 and has built a loyal fan-base by opening for acts like Snoop Dogg, Nas, Gym Class Heroes and more. He has created a genre called "lit-hop", where he writes songs about classic Edgar Allan Poe and William Shakespeare works. He just played the entire Vans Warped Tour followed by an eight week club run. His new album is called "Lars Attacks!" and just came out on Lars's own label Horris Records. His music sounds like a mixture between the Beastie Boys and Daniel Johnston.

The Chicharones
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:30pm @ Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)

The Chicharones, formed at South by Southwest in 2001, are composed of songwriters Sleep and Josh Martinez. Since releasing their 2006 opus When Pigs Fly (Camobear Records/Bella Union), they have toured the world, collaborated with the who's who of underground pop, released critically and commercially successful solo albums and become international celebrities. Much has happened in the four years since their last release "When Pigs Fly". "Chicharones - The Best Bar Band in America" The Chicharones have toured the world together, solo and with live bands, and learned countless new tricks along the road. From Sleep's magic tricks and quick change routines, to Martinez's beer balancing and hi-kicking Elvis dance moves, they are buzzing everywhere with their insanely energetic live shows. Since adding live drums and bass to their live show, they can literally play with any other act and hold their own. Spin called the Chicharones "The best bar band in America" after seeing a 2.5 hour set at the Viper Room in Los Angeles. It’s easy to see why. Expect 5-part harmonies, a razor tight band, costume changes, syncopated dance moves, stage magic, standup comedy and the joyful interplay of 10 year veteran performers Sleep and Josh Martinez. And there's also rap.

Karma Jonze
    Saturday March 17, 2012 9:00pm - 9:15pm @ Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)
Texas has a new leading lady and her name is Karma Jonze. Known for not following the norm and creating her own unique brand of southern hip hop flows and lyrics, Karma is setting a new standard as she takes the south by the storm one fan at a time. By any means, do not compare her to others because you simply can’t. Her unconventional approach and out of the box method of style has made it quite difficult toplace her in any one type category which is simply perfect for Karma who chooses to create her own lane. While every other artist is out there claiming that their style has yet to be rivaled, Karma is busy creating the platform and paving the way for future female hip hop/rap artists to follow in her footsteps.

Instead, he opted to showcase his smooth flow of clever lyrics laced with catchy beats. It wasn’t long before Skewby gained national attention from blogs like “Ill Roots” and “Smoking Section” who pegged him as an artist who “revives real hip hop.”

Rockwell Knuckles
    Saturday March 17, 2012 10:50pm - 11:10pm @ Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)

Known for giddy, left-field lyricism and sonic innovation, Rockwell Knuckles is the most exciting hip-hop talent to come out of St. Louis in years. His rapping is technically impeccable, but his humor recalls the bumbling Kenny Powers, whose fictional audiobook is referenced in the title of Rockwell’s new album, You’re Fucking Out, I’m Fucking In. The work shows him hitting on all cylinders, a regional heavyweight ready to take his place among the best underground emcees in the nation. Opines Riverfront Times critic Christian Schaeffer: “Rockwell Knuckles stands tall as St. Louis’ most capable and adventurous hip-hop artist.”
He’s also been called a cross between Willie Wonka and Tupac Shakur, which might sound odd but makes a certain sense. “You combine pure imagination with harsh reality,” says Rockwell, “and you’re bound to get something interesting.” Born Corey Barnett, his rap name comes from a childhood altercation at a bus stop with a neighborhood bully – who was hassling him for wearing his private school uniform. He bloodied his hand punching the tough in the mouth, and since he was also known to “rock well,” the moniker Rockwell Knuckles stuck. (You can call him Rocky, however.)
Rocky later dropped out of Harris-Stowe State University to focus on his music, recording now-lost classics with his clique Pangea. He teamed up with rapper Wafeek and the man who now manages him, Brian “Grand” Trotter, before losing almost everything he owned in a fire caused by a 2004 lighting strike. He promptly reprioritized and dedicated himself to his music more strongly than ever, releasing his fiercely melodic debut Northside Phenomenon in 2007. The work featured the beats of venerated local Kenautis Smith and was a revelation to the city’s backpacker scene, landing Rocky on the cover of St. Louis’s alt-weekly Riverfront Times.
Teaming up with luminaries like Vandalyzm and Black Spade – on whose critically-beloved Om Records debut To Serve With Love he appears – he continued his ascent with works like mixtape The Glow and album Choose Your Own Adventure. His lyricism evolved rapidly, developing into the playful style he calls “multi-faceted brain-burning mind fuckery.” He calls his posse, meanwhile, the “Bullet Train Army.” With Rocky in the conductor’s seat, it also includes collaborators like Theresa Payne and Trackstar the DJ, and represents his forward-thinking mentality. “We’re constantly moving, building, trying to make things better and help people day by day,” he explains. “It’s an ideology that will turn into a way of being.”
This locomotive is quickly gathering speed; Rocky recently performed on a mini-tour with Gary, Indiana phenomenon Freddie Gibbs, and has also played with new-generation stars like Yelawolf and Big K.R.I.T., captivating those artists’ fans with his unorthodox style. “People look at me crazy while I’m rapping,” he says. “I know that’s a good sign.”
You’re Fucking Out, I’m Fucking In is his magnum opus, a progressive rap album with pop sensibilities that is both intelligent and fun. The genre-hopping, outer-space beats come courtesy of producers including Trifeckta, Adult Fur, and B-Money, but the lyrical fluidity and overwhelming confidence is all his own. “I wanted to show what I’m capable of, point blank period,” Rocky says of the work. “This is not a ‘something for everyone’ record. Like Kenny Powers, the whole project has an aggressive, non-apologetic, abrasive [vibe].” His mission statement becomes clear raps on standout track “Silly Human,” on which he raps: “Just the band on the run, Rockwell and the gang/ Is the coast clear?/ Yeah I see no road blocks…baby, we build robots.”

Truth Universal
    Sunday March 18, 2012 12:50am - 1:10am @ Malaia (300 E. 6th St.)

Originally born in Diego Martin, Trinidad, Tajiri Kamau moved to the Big Easy, New Orleans, in 1977 at age four. Initially wanting to DJ, he dove head first into Hip Hop in the mid-‘80s. His parents' tastes in political reggae and calypso, including that of Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, and Bob Marley, informed his hip-hop collection and guided him towards artists influenced by the Nation of Gods and Earths. Truth's career began underground, dropping several low-key, street releases, like the "Dashiki Dialogue" (2000) 12"/maxi-single and the EP Plantation Graffiti (2001). A string of 12” releases followed, including “Four Track Mind”(2002), which afforded Truth the opportunity to share the stage with premier Hip Hop acts across the North American continent.
