Le Fleur
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

Le Fleur formed in 2005 out of friendship and a shared love for making music. A year later, Le Fleur recorded their first album "Truce" which was self released as a six song EP. Then in late 2009, Le Fleur released their sophomore album, "Din Din" as a limited edition, hand silkscreened full length vinyl record. Le Fleur gathers influence from bands such as the Pixies, Les Savy Fav, Sonic Youth, and Shellac. They play independent rock music with unique chord progressions, haunting guitar melody, and driving rhythm all complemented by poignant, dreamy vocals. They can be seen in Boise, Idaho at the Visual Arts Collective, Neurolux Lounge, and Knitting Factory as well as other clubs. On their multiple tours, they have played The Showbox (Seattle), The Crystal Ballroom (Portland), The Wonder Ballroom (Eugene), The Little Red Lion (Eureka) and The Knitting Factory (Boise) as well as the Ghost Town Gallery (Oakland). Le Fleur has shared the stage with bands such as: Built to Spill, Local Natives, Finn Riggins, Neon Trees, The Growlers, Evangelicals, Tartufi, French Miami, Low Red Land, AAN, Church, Starving Daughters, Boy Eat Drum Machine, Neva Dinova, and many more.

Finn Riggins
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
Dynamic, quirky and highly energetic indie rock trio Finn Riggins has made a name for itself around the West and the greater US as road warriors from the oft-overlooked state of Idaho over the last several years. Since the release of their debut album on Portland's beloved mom-and-pop label Tender Loving Empire in 2007, they have averaged close to 200 shows a year in 43 states -- including a massive 80-day tour around the entire perimeter of the US in the Spring of 2010. Most of this touring has been on the backs of their DIY ethic and wide open approach to the changing music industry. In 2009 and 2010 they did three different support tours with fellow Idahoans Built To Spill.

Youth Lagoon
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he’s been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life – the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living.
“Youth Lagoon isn’t me.” says Powers. “It’s merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn’t until this last year – when I realized I was more than just music – that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon.”
Throughout the course of 2010, Powers began to write an album about things he had a hard time talking about. He claims that when he tries to talk about it to people, he doesn’t make sense. So he wrote an album about it entitled The Year of Hibernation. “For my whole life I’ve dealt with extreme anxiety.” says Powers. “Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird.. bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I’m literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it.”
Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic. Powers claims his music is like letting people read his journal. “I don’t think I could ever write a completely happy album. It’s not that I’m not a happy person,” claims Powers, “but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.”

Polica
    Thursday March 15, 2012 7:00pm - 7:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs' members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed to the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.

Heartless Bastards
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

From Melanie Haupt, The Austin Chronicle:

When a woman finds herself single in her 30s, either because she just got out of a long relationship or just hasn't found the one, she might go through a certain mourning process. There may be multiple pints of Häagen-Dazs or contemplation of a future accompanied by a bevy of cats all named Sweetie.

For Erika Wennerstrom, 34, possessor of Austin's Heartless Bastards, the dissolution of a nine-year partnership provided the impetus for self-discernment that eventually became 2009's The Mountain for Fat Possum Records and now Arrow (Partisan).

"It took a while to readjust and get back to myself," Wennerstrom recalls from a tour bus in North Carolina. "[Arrow] picks up where the last album left off, and it's how I rediscover who I am post-relationship and find a sense of comfort in being on my own."

The new album, produced by fast-becoming-production-legend Jim Eno (also known as the drummer for Spoon), serves up a heaping platter of dirty blues and garage riffs, Wennerstrom shuffling restlessly between the poles of vulnerability and ass-kicking, with tightly controlled melodies that serve as both mirror and counterpoint to the story.

"I tend to write from a personal place," she admits. "I feel like I'm trying to write a song that I would like to listen to."

Arrow also finds the Heartless Bastards morphed into a quartet with the addition of guitarist Mark Nathan, the effect of which has tangible results in the way the band's sound has gelled with this release, which many have deemed the one that will make Heartless Bastards' fortune.

"There's a chemistry between us as people and musicians, and I hope it comes across on this record."

Lissy Trullie
    Friday March 16, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)

The world at large got its first glimpse of Lissy Trullie by virtue of an arresting image taken by Ryan McGinley for his groundbreaking 2002 Whitney Museum exhibit, The Kids Are Alright. A young Lissy, balancing brashness and innocence, leaped past a graffiti-ed bathroom wall, a pale, freckled sprite with strawberry blonde hair, serendipitously snapped as she dashed through an otherwise gritty tableau. Trullie has matured a lot since then, turning slimmer, more angular and intriguingly androgynous, her hair cut in a severe bob that Audrey Hepburn might have sported if she’d hung out at the Mudd Club. But the music she has created, with the help of producers John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A., Shakira) and David Sitek (TV On the Radios, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars), for her self-titled debut album is a lot like that famous McGinley photo. Dirty guitar sounds and driving, new wave-tempo-ed drums are countered by swirling synths, brass, and layers of heavenly vocals, a beguiling mix of the earthy and the ethereal -- with the riveting figure of Trullie at its center.
