Cold Showers
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

Confidence isn’t always born of experience, as seen by the forceful debut by Los Angeles band Cold Showers. Combining influences of late 1970s post-punk with a sonic exploration closer to something from Neu!, it is the carefully constructed spatiality of the music that gives the somewhat minimal lyrics their weight; distant and atmospheric, it lends the hazy vocals a detached, ghostly cast. Moments of aggression and transcendence transform the songs from mere sound to rich sonic narratives: within the rise of the language lies a vision under restraint, a pent up joy that is like nothing else. The resulting sound is unexpectedly tough, vital, and contemporary.

Shimmering Stars
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

Shimmering Stars is a three-piece dream pop act from Vancouver, BC, Canada. The music embodies an attempt at drawing out and illuminating the subtle darkness inherent in the seemingly wholesome, innocent music of the 1950s and 60s. The result filters older influences like the Everly Brothers, Del Shannon, Phil Spector, and Bo Diddley through a contemporary indie lens. Songs about being in love, not being in love, the painfully modern condition of floating in a state of suspended adolescence – all tinted with the slight self-deprication of knowing how trite it is to be writing songs about these things at all.

Xray Eyeballs
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)
Xray Eyeballs began as the brainchild of guitarist O.J. San Felipe and bassist Carly Rabalais, who, after founding Brooklyn garage-rock juggernaut Golden Triangle (Hardly Art), sought a release that would sate both their sweet-toothed desires and their darker impulses, like a candy-coated Vicodin. Like their musical antecedents The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground, Xray Eyeballs creates a world of their own. Low-lifes, night-walkers, pill-riders, and other sordid characters stalk the band’s New York City streets and their songs compel you to follow them until you find the peace of a night redeemed in the morning light.
On “Splendor Squalor,” Xray Eyeballs’ second full-length on Kanine Records, refracted rays of that redemptive light shine through the band's eerie musical haze. The band evolves to more sophisticated songwriting and adventurous arrangement, while retaining the spark and energy of their raw early material, a progression that recalls Wire's "154" and The Cure's "Pornography." The addition of Sarah Baldwin (The Girls at Dawn, Fergus & Geronimo) on drums and Liz Lohse (Heaven, Runaway Suns) on guitar and synths expands the band's sonic possibilities with lush vocal harmonies, unique musical counterpoints and inspired songwriting contributions. Xray Eyeballs' new lineup deftly maneuvers from unctuous drones to punk rave-ups and new-wave bangers with a confidence and melodic sensibility that illuminates the splendor in the squalor.
The needle drops on “Four” and you find yourself enthused with the will to cross the dance floor and talk to that crush your friends warned you about. “I’m feeling alright,” San Felipe sings. You believe him and feel alright, too. The bass throbs with Factory-style control as “X” sends you oscillating wildly in a lovers’ power struggle: "I control you/ You control me." It’s 6 AM and you’re sitting on a couch between two guys who either wish they were Lou Reed and Alan Vega or actually are Lou Reed and Alan Vega. You shouldn’t have taken that last anything of anything. “Syrup,” featuring Christiana Key (Cult of Youth, Zola Jesus) on violin, wafts into the room and suddenly that time between last call and pancakes make sense.
Xray Eyeballs fully realizes their vision of "Splendor Squalor" live: skater kids donning the band’s signature “Ghost Girl” t-shirt bounce off the walls; the oldest punks in the world reluctantly acknowledge the validity of something new; hands typically stuffed in the pockets of skin-tight jeans wave in the air like they just don’t care; record nerds dance as if nobody’s blogging; goths smile. The band's undeniable energy brings the shadows in the darkness to life. These creatures bear witness to San Felipe’s blatant disregard for his physical well-being as the enraptured frontman, refusing to acknowledge the limitations of both stage and gravity, bounds recklessly around the crowd and dangles perilously from the ceiling, a provocation for the audience to match the band’s enthusiasm. Driven to seduce as many as possible into their world, Xray Eyeballs have toured across the country numerous times on their own, consistently delivering the show everyone will be talking about the next day.

Jacuzzi Boys
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

The Jacuzzi Boys’ practice space is like most any other -- crammed with gear along with one of the guys’ record collections. But their band room happens to be located in a trailer tucked just inside Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on gorgeous Key Biscayne, FL. Just a few feet from their amps: tropical paradise. This is an area home to weird animals and buttonwood trees, located on an island just outside of Miami. “Miami is not known for producing many good bands,” bassist Danny Gonzalez concedes. “So, quite frequently we get asked, ‘would you ever consider moving?’ Our answer is always, ‘No!’ This is where our friends and family are from. Miami is such a part of the Jacuzzi Boys, as important as any musical influence.”

Mujeres
    Thursday March 15, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)
Four gentlemen from Barcelona who met at the university, where they studied cinema, and came to the brilliant idea to form a band. We don't know if they would have been geniuses in the science of cinema, we do know that their decision to become Mujeres paid of. The band is known for a mix of punk, garage, rock & roll and maybe even some blues and rockabilly. It is fast, exhilarating and fun. Within a year after releasing their self titled debut they had a full touring schedule. Not just in the little bars in Barcelona where they started their career, but all over the world. Mujeres even conquered the U.S. with their magnificent show. You don't even have to know the songs to sing and jump along. Mujeres is pure fun, for band and audience. At The SXSW they will present their brand new album 'Soft Gems' (Sones, 2012)

TacocaT
    Thursday March 15, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)
On the surface, TacocaT may seem to be all about tacos, cats, fluorescent highlighters, reverb, great hair, gum, and tambourines, but that's just to throw you. That's frosting. Through clever social and political commentary via pop culture references and a relentless emphasis on positivity, this grrrl-fronted palindrome transcend pop-punk pigeonholing while never forgetting their primary mission: FUN. The four-piece has shared the stage with the likes of Best Coast, the Vivian Girls, Kid Congo Powers and Leslie and the Lys. Their debut album Shame Spiral was released on Seattle’s Don't Stop Believin' Records in 2008, and quickly won over local critics, DJs, musicians, and Bustopher Joneses (that is to say, “cats about town”). TacocaT are Lelah Maupin, Bree McKenna, Emily Nokes, and Eric Randall.

Seapony
    Friday March 16, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)
The music of Seapony is refreshing in its simplicity. Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to "Dreaming," the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long. Like Young Marble Giants and Beat Happening before them, this young three-piece has generated excitement that belies their music's modest means. And their back story is just as no-nonsense.

La Sera
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

La Sera’s Sees The Light follows 2011’s masterful self-titled debut with ten new tracks of peppy break-up pop brimming with defiance and bitter sweetness. On album opener “Love That’s Gone,” the vocals and drumbeat linger for seconds, swaying in the wind while the guitar cuts through, charming you, pulling you by your shirt and telling you that it is time to move on. This is a break-up album for the best kinds of break-ups. There's a lightness of touch, too, that surround the harmonies throughout and makes one yearn for the days of Donna Lynn, Julie Ruin and The Shirelles. But before you can settle into your seat, La Sera delivers a one-two punch - a rip of rolling snare and sending you speeding off in a fast car. Seize the light.

    Friday March 16, 2012 11:45pm - 12:15am @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

Montreal-born Jef Barbara's debut LP Contamination stakes his claim as an heir of pop music's golden age. With a wide array of influences, Contamination falls within the tradition of 80s landmarks such as George Michael's Faith, and alternates nods to French New Wave, soft rock, Kosmische Musik, and synth disco. Contamination also sees the glampop poet bridging Canada's two solitudes by crooning in both official languages equally, something that has been done, although not as thoroughly, on his two previous EPs. Contamination is also an ode to pop music's contagious powers - a force to reckon with, especially when armed with catchy hooks, which make up the Barbara's core songwriting asset. Jef Barbara aims to annihilate his genre's conventions, with guerilla-style music videos and live karaoke performances. His debut release is set to be re-issued on Paris-based label Tricatel in March 2012.
