Atash
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 9:45pm - 10:25pm @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)

ATASH is a brotherhood of musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds. The band’s sheer diversity reminds us that we are all bearers of unique cultural traditions rooted in different geographical places. Yet the budding, cross-cultural language that Atash aids in creating through the blending of these unique traditions is the musical parallel to an important message. The music of Atash suggests our potential to transform boundaries into opportunities, to translate fields of discord and difference into sites of collaboration.

Delhi 2 Dublin
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)

Hour Magazine wrote that “Delhi 2 Dublin is the United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”. They are a Vancouver based band that plays an energetic mash-up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats. Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran, Andrew Kim and Ravi Binning along with touring musician Sara Fitzpatrick are diverse in both their backgrounds and musical influences. They have been together over five years and released four albums and an EP including its latest, Delhi 2 Dubland. The Delhi 2 Dublin crew is constantly touring. The musicians feel that they plug directly into the world’s music and energy. The strong word-of-mouth for their live performances has enabled them to build a loyal fan base. Originality and evolution are all part of the Delhi 2 Dublin experience. They have become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands and 2012 will only see them enhancing that reputation.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 9:30pm - 10:10pm @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)

Live music in the purest and most powerful sense of the word. A melting pot of songs with special Nairobi spice, that never fails to bring fans to their feet. Sauti Sol are a magnetic, magical experience to behold.

These four young, passionate musicians launched their career in Kenya’s eclectic capital city, Nairobi, and over the past three years, have brought forth two albums, a European tour, television appearances and countless hours of media coverage. There’s no cultural stereotypes to be found here, merely a unique confidence and fuel for their gift of music. Sauti Sol offers an accessible and internationally appealing spin on world music. Their albums, Sol Filosofia (2011) and Mwanzo (2008), both of which were extremely successful on Kenyan charts and gained international attention, showcase content reflective of the choices, consequences and challenges that face Kenyan youth today.

In March of 2011, Sauti Sol accepted an exclusive invitation to perform at the South By Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, marking their first American appearance. Celebrated by a host of bloggers, fans and fellow artists as the most entertaining and best dressed act at the festival, Sauti Sol is already invited to return in 2012.

Baloji
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:30pm - 11:10pm @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)

Baloji rhymes in a intensely personal way about his life between the two poles of Belgium and Congo. He was born in Congo but grew up in Belgium. That complex identity has lead him to make some very rich music. The album Kinshasa Succursale, which will soon be released worldwide by Crammed Discs is a riot of pan-African and African diaspora sounds and styles barely contained by the basic idea of an acoustic/electric hip hop album. Recorded in Kinshasa, it includes collaborations with the finest musicians from Congo, including Konono No1 & Zaïko Langa Langa).

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
    Friday March 16, 2012 12:30am - 1:50am @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)
With the mighty new From Africa With Fury: Rise, Seun Anikulapo Kuti returns with his hybrid of Afrobeat touchstones and contemporary cues. As with his previous efforts, Seun heads up Egypt 80, the extraordinary combo first fronted by his renowned father. The album follows Kuti’s critically praised debut, 2008’s Many Things, which was unanimously hailed for continuing Fela’s musical legacy. From Africa With Fury: Rise sees Kuti finding his own idiosyncratic voice as songwriter, singer, and band leader, its songs and sonic approach marked by provocative edge and mature self-assurance.

She grew up to the sound of divas - raï and châabi, like Cheikha Rimitti, and the great Egyptian Oum Khalsoum - between traditional Berber music and desert rock’n’roll, with the blues of the great Malian Ali Farka Touré and the sensual folk music of Ismaël Lo in the wings. Her first album was released by EMI France.

Canteca de Macao
    Sunday March 18, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Copa (217 Congress Ave)

Canteca de Macao arised almost a decade ago because a combination of coincidences in Madrid. The connection with the audience was almost immediate in a city that, by that time, was under an interesting cultural phenomenon. Immigration, certain permissiveness with live music on the street or the close relationship of the band with the university, were the key factors that caused the breeding ground for their scope.
After the first small concerts and the recording of their first demo (more than 500.000 downloads), the members of Canteca de Macao started to take the project seriously. Several record labels started to get interested in the band who, without a record in the market, was demonstrating its capacity of concentrate big audiences and were starting to stand out in festivals like Viñarock , in Spain or Rumbo a Caracas, in Venezuela.
Canteca de Macao tiptoed into the musical industry. In one hand they needed their support to turn professionals and work fulltime for the band and in the other hand, they wanted to maintain some of the principles that led them to that point. The first one was is the free download of their music through their website. Under this premise, they signed a contract with Warner for the recording of their second record “Camino de la vida entera” (2007) and the license of their first self-produced record “Cachai?” (2004). During this period they tour extensively performing over 100 gigs that led them all around the Iberian Peninsula and to many events and festivals in many countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Jordan, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Morocco, New York, Costa Rica or Chicago.
In 2007, the band had two nominations for the Music Awards: the first single of “Camino de la vida entera”, “Bellas”, was nominated in the best revelation author and Canteca de Macao received the nomination as best revelation artist.
Three years later, in 2010, the second single of this record was chosen, “Contigo”, as one of the main tunes of the sound track of the film Habitación en Roma, directed by Julio Medem.
In 2009 under the same record label they issued, “Agua pa´ la tierra”, a musically mature record that will experiment many important changes in the band. From one side, Danilo, the Chilean flute player who provided an unmistakable colour to the music of the band, decided to get back to Chile.
One night they met Enriquito, a versatile trumpeter specialized in flamenco ‐jazz and they decided to bet for the change of the sound inviting him to be part of the band.
So, 2011 has been a busy year full of expectations. In this context, the band has to face the recording of his fourth album and they decided to act according to their situation, betting for another change: they left Warner and they expose themselves to the support of their fans through a still unknown method in Spain: Crowdfunding.
The record could only be released if the fans support the band through their economical contributions before recording it.
After 40 days of efforts and media impact, Canteca de Macao were able to achieve their target some days before the predetermined period. Crowdfunding was successful and they start the recording of “Nunca es Tarde”, which includes a documentary that relates this adventure from the beginning.
For many, “Nunca es tarde” is “the record”. A reflection of the maturity and the consolidation of their sound, hatched in such a special framework as themselves. 2012 will be the year in which they will see the return of a nonstop work that is still working with more energy than ever and which has already been supported by the fans and the media, in a tour that will lead them to play all over Spain and all over the world, having engaged gigs in places like Belgium, Holland, New York, Texas or Chicago.
