Goldrush
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Clive Bar (609 Davis St)

Prabir, Treesa, Matt, and Gregg are Richmond, VA's Goldrush. This band is a fun balance of orchestral based classical music being injected into some high octane pop and rock and roll. The influences of this band range from The Beatles to Ray Charles to the old Ludwig Van. Treesa and Matt Gold are both classically trained musicians that have played with various symphonies around the United States. Similarly, Gregg Brooks and Prabir Mehta have been hitting the rock and indie rock circuit for quite a while also. The songs are constructed as three minute pop tunes and then filled with the frantic absurdity that only three centuries of violin and contra bass can bring. While being given the 'classical music' treatment, the songs are nothing that would go hand in hand with the usual attitudes associated with the world of symphonies and orchestras. No ties, no silence, or sobriety. Topics range from absurd wealth to sex to use of the most venerable vices. Mainly, they're fun songs with a sense of humor...we think. Lol?

Asbury Park, New Jersey's Brick + Mortar are Brandon Asraf and John Tacon. The unconventional 2 piece fuses driving percussion, grooving bass, eclectic samples, and anthemic vocals to create a new world sound that is so fresh you truly need to hear it for yourself. They are fresh off a string of buzz filled CMJ performances, and a successful east coast tour. Brick + Mortar's latest release, the "Heatstroke" (maxi-single), features 3 tracks that are already becoming fan favorites at live shows.

Tycho is the music project of San Francisco artist and producer Scott Hansen. As Tycho, Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend into the horizon. Known in the design world as ISO50, Hansen is famed for his bucolic, sun-drenched design style, which serves as a backdrop and mirror for his musical output. Hansen began his electronic-music career with 2002’s The Science of Patterns EP , which was followed in 2004 by his first full length, Sunrise Projector.

Greylag
    Saturday March 17, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Clive Bar (609 Davis St)

Greylag’s sound hinges on the pair’s meditative, hymn-like vocal harmonies, complimented by folksy, bluesy runs on the acoustic guitar. Along with the help of local musicians who regularly join them on tour, the duo laid down the album in four days. The result includes the jazzy, airy meditation "Tiger" and the sprightly backwoods march "Black Crow." Stonestreet is hesitant to compare Greylag to other artists, but name-checks the likes of Wilco, Feist and Grizzly Bear as inspirations. "I was able to see the world through a fresh lens," he says of the recording process.

Lissy Trullie
    Sunday March 18, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Clive Bar (609 Davis St)

The world at large got its first glimpse of Lissy Trullie by virtue of an arresting image taken by Ryan McGinley for his groundbreaking 2002 Whitney Museum exhibit, The Kids Are Alright. A young Lissy, balancing brashness and innocence, leaped past a graffiti-ed bathroom wall, a pale, freckled sprite with strawberry blonde hair, serendipitously snapped as she dashed through an otherwise gritty tableau. Trullie has matured a lot since then, turning slimmer, more angular and intriguingly androgynous, her hair cut in a severe bob that Audrey Hepburn might have sported if she’d hung out at the Mudd Club. But the music she has created, with the help of producers John Hill (Santigold, M.I.A., Shakira) and David Sitek (TV On the Radios, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars), for her self-titled debut album is a lot like that famous McGinley photo. Dirty guitar sounds and driving, new wave-tempo-ed drums are countered by swirling synths, brass, and layers of heavenly vocals, a beguiling mix of the earthy and the ethereal -- with the riveting figure of Trullie at its center.

Graffiti6
    Sunday March 18, 2012 1:00am - 2:00am @ Clive Bar (609 Davis St)

Colours, the debut album from Britain’s Graffiti6, is as vividly vibrant as both the project’s moniker and its album title suggest: an uncategorizable mélange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British Northern Soul that fully capitalizes on the soaring uplift of Jamie Scott’s emotionally transparent voice and gift for melody and TommyD’s irresistible rhythms and inventive production. Songs like “Stone In My Heart,” “Stare Into The Sun,” “Annie You Save Me,” and “Free” are “latter-day psych-soul nuggets, all phased vocals and sunshine melodies given the warp factor,” as London’s Guardian newspaper put it, while the remainder of Colours zigzags all over the musical map from the folk-soul balladry of “Goodbye Geoffrey Drake,” to the spare, gospel-inflected feel of “Over You,” to the downtempo sultriness of “Calm The Storm,” to the jangly indie-rock vibe of “Lay Me Down.” “For me, the unexpectedness of the sound is the whole point,” Scott says. “It’s fun to mess with people’s heads.”
