Allah-Las
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:40pm - 11:15pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)
Greil Marcus liked to refer back to “The Old, Weird America” when discussing a certain famous set of recordings that emanated from a Woodstock cabin basement. ALLAH-LAS sound like the Old, Weird Los Angeles: Strains of true surfing music, American harmonies, Sunset Strip backbeat, desert ramble filtered through Goldstar Sessioneers; That pre-fuzz pedal ‘electrified folk’ music and pop groups hitting that California sound with the tambourine on just the right beat. When you hear it, you see things — Venice’s arches lit at night with the ocean in the distance; mid-century hamburger stands and slow-moving main drags in residential nights; Teen-age revues at 400 person ballrooms; Ferus Gallery beatniks; bungalows in canyons; hidden deco stairsteps peeking from leafy hillsides; kustom kars and dovetails and chicks in OP shorts with long, long hair. Like a Dennis Hopper photo come to life. You look at their well worn Fender guitars, their real surfer tans, their dusty suede boots - and you see it’s a sound natural to them; This isn’t an act. - Nick Waterhouse (PRES records)

Feeding People
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:30pm - 12:00am @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

Beyond the real deal is the unreal deal, and therein lies Feeding People, a band of teenagers making some of the heaviest psychedelic around decades after the 13th Floor Elevators declared their hallucinatory sense of purpose. Feeding People founders Jessie Jones and Nic Rachman met at an Evangelical Church in Anaheim when they were just thirteen years old: the first songs they ever played together were in praise of Jesus in the Sunday School band. Six years later, they were plucked from the Orange County coffee house scene by Burger Records, home to the OC’s most talented young punks. Now, with drummer Mike Reinhart—whom Rachman met chasing wild chickens all over Yorba Linda—bassist Louis Filliger and organist Jane Reich, they play heavy and dark psychedelia with Sabbath ideals and traces of sludge metal and pre-war blues and those Sunday School sing-a-longs from years past. Nineteen-year-old Jones channels the raw power of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Janis Joplin at her most primal as she leads with strong, almost vicious vocals, bellowing blasphemies as if possessed by spirits with a masked sweetness reminiscent of Billie Holiday. Her siren call reeled in Chris Alfaro of Free the Robots who produced some of the band’s earliest recordings, all of which were written acoustic and recorded electric in a single sweaty take in Reinhart’s parents’ 6’x10’ walk-in closet with a 4-track recorder and mic stands made of broom handles taped to fire extinguishers. After playing only a couple shows, Feeding People became the second band ever invited to play storied electronic music club Low End Theory, where they shared the stage with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Feeding People join the Elevators’ quest for sanity as they bridge the gap between Burger beer busts and Low End bass explosions with their debut LP, out this summer.

Exit
    Thursday March 15, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

Exit was born in the mid-1990s out of Austin, Texas' Ben Londa's love of electronic music, particularly the ambient soundscapes of Global Communication and early Projekt Records releases. Meshing electronics with guitars, Londa began self-releasing albums at rapid speed. 2005's The Way Out Is Through showed Londa's maturity as a songwriter, garnering praise from publications all around the world. Merging acoustic guitars and electronics with elements of new wave and shoegaze, The Way Out Is Through has been described as "one of the best, most well-crafted albums of the year" by CD Baby and "a very important release and an artist to pay attention to" by Dark Austin.

Mr. Dream
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

After last years' run of critically acclaimed singles ("Knuckle Sandwich", "Knick Knack", "Scarred for Life", "Learn the Language"), Brooklyn's Mr. Dream presents its debut album TRASH HIT. It's an ambitious rock record that marries extremes: harsh noise and catchy melodies, and straight-ahead pop sensibilities. This is music unabashedly working in the tradition of some of the greatest rock acts: Buzzcocks, Pixies, Nirvana, Guided by Voices, and the Breeders. Mr. Dream picks up where those bands left off, further exploring the textures of aggressive rock music that's unafraid to have strong hooks and thoughtful lyrics.

The Hundred Days
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

“One hundred days” was the commitment made after four twenty-somethings met in the San Francisco in 2005. And, for 100 days the four young musicians - that would later name their band by the same name - spent night and day locked in the same house discovering and perfecting their sound into what has become a collection of critically-acclaimed indie-rock gems that are as catchy as they are clever and sonically arresting.

Future Unlimited
    Friday March 16, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

Future Unlimited are a duo from Nashville for whom the particulars of their unusual bond have led them to create a thoroughly studied modern futurist bent on the music they love. For Future Unlimited, the 80’s is not merely a by-gone era; to them, it is a mindset and a structure which makes sense. "It is our inspiration – we live it," says David. "We annoy each other quoting movies from it. And...we know the songs inside and out."

Bam Bam
    Friday March 16, 2012 10:30pm - 11:10pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

Albums that are determined to become legendary milestones seem to be appearing less frequently during the 21st century. With the immediacy of the Internet, as listeners, we consume a bigger number of projects than we did during our adolescence by just watching MTV. In the thousands of MP3s by countless artists, most are forgettable, ephemeral movements whose days are numbered. But a few reveal themselves as classics that may even transcend into consolidated sub-genres. Monterrey’s beloved indie rockers Bam Bam surprised music blogs with their fascinating self-titled debut EP, astonishing the indie circuit geeks with fresh, out-of-this-world grooves. Although their success was moderate, hopes for the regiomontanos to release an even more impressive first full-length were in. And Bam Bam has surpassed all expectations, opening an exciting new chapter in Mexican rock history with the stellar Futura Vía, a psychedelic pop record equivalent to an intergalactic experience. Futura Vía is bound to be a reference in years to come, a majestic exercise about the universe, a meticulous work in conceptualization, and an undeniably fantastic achievement in the psychedelic field.

Gold & Youth
    Friday March 16, 2012 11:30pm - 12:10am @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

Formed in Victoria BC, Canada, in 2009 and now settled in Vancouver, Gold & Youth (formerly known as The Racoons) have developed their craft on a considerable number of stages. Musically, Gold & Youth blend synthetic and organic textures. Sequenced bass and programmed drum loops are layered against the sound of a live band, creating a density one might not expect from a three-piece. Danceable, but you could a rock out if you want to. Also: they write a lot of hooks.

Deadly Cradle Death
    Saturday March 17, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ 512 (408 E 6th St)

From Chase Hoffberger, The Austin Chronicle:

Plight of the Chinese musician: Fly 7,000 miles for South by Southwest and who do you end up sharing a showcase with? The other Chinese bands that made the trip. Welcome to Texas; enjoy the tacos. Most intriguing here is Beijing quartet Carsick Cars, SXSW 2011 veterans who tip their cap to Pavement, Velvet Underground, and Sonic Youth on MMR debut You Can Listen, You Can Talk. Similarly distorted, Rustic arrives as a surfer punk foursome with a love of hair metal. From Shanghai, Duck Fight Goose takes the torch from LCD Soundsystem and ignites the dance-rock party. Same could be said for Beijing songstress Nova Heart, the dark, layered, dance-pop side project of Helen Feng. Those looking to rev their engines should stick around for Snapline, while Deadly Cradle Death give proof that witch house has a home in the Middle Kingdom.
