Man Vs. Algorithm: Online Video Curation Face-Off
Human or Machine? Who really knows what videos you're going to like best? Online video curation is in a heated battle between algorithmic curation and human, editorial selection. Let's settle this debate once and for all.The war of humans versus machines has hit the battlefield of online video curation. Recommendation engines and discovery algorithms are rapidly taking over on some of the world's biggest video sites including YouTube. But a tight band of master human curators are fighting back, like Philip DeFranco and Neetzam Zimmerman (The Daily Wh.at). This session will take test subjects from the audience in a blind face-off to see whether the humans can beat the picks of YouTube's "AL" algorithm. Session is hosted by Marc Hustvedt (Chill, Tubefilter)

Future of Entertainment: Viewer Becomes User
Mobile social networking apps continue to grow in popularity, a trend that gives emerging technology companies a unique chance to partner with entertainment channels to provide audiences with an enhanced, personalized experience. Festribution: Film Festivals as Distributors
Do festivals represent the future of independent film distribution? Where are the opportunities? What are the risks? This panel will explore emergent models and speculate on ways independent producers (and distributors) may leverage a robust film festival circuit for commercial exploitation. With major festivals like Sundance, sxsw and Tribeca already in the game in varying ways, it seems this will be a developing trend. Will smaller regional festivals organize to create a theatrical circuit? Can a festival brand or screening translate into viable, direct revenues for the independent film sector? Is this what festivals should be doing? This panel explores one of the most compelling new developments in the business of film festivals.

DSLR Gear: Film Production in a Carry-On (Or Two)
The Bui Brothers have traveled around the world shooting on DSLRs for the last three years, starting with the Nikon D90 (the first video-capable DSLR) then quickly moving on to shoot the first US nation-wide TV commercial on the 5D mark II. They have used these cameras in video production since they were released and have evolved their gear bags to contain the best and most efficient DSLR gear. This workshop will cover all of the DSLR gear and accessories that they use on location shoots. They travel light, even with local shoots and will talk about all of the necessary gear for shooting efficiently...even things that don't fit in the carry-on but will make your shoot go smoother and easier.

Your Film's Unique Digital Distribution Strategy
Since its inception, digital distribution has promised independent filmmakers direct access to audiences, but has it delivered? In this panel, three pioneers of digital distribution – Snag Films, Pre Screen, EPIX and Fandor – will explore this question and discuss the ways in which independent filmmakers can bring their films to digital audiences. Moderated by Richard Lorber, President & CEO of Kino Lorber, each digital platform will discuss their success (and failures), the evolution of their business models, the changing world of free, and what options filmmakers have to access the widest online audience possible through such platforms as cable VOD and SVOD and (drum roll) how to make money. For filmmakers seeking a frank and open discussion about the best way to approach the digital marketplace (whether by working with a distributor or going it alone), this is a not-to-be-missed panel dealing with the next frontier of indie film distribution.

The Evolution of the Douchebag in Modern Cinema
Once upon a time at the movies, the noble everyman triumphed at the end while the shady operator got his comeuppance. It was the natural order of things. Then, in 1987, everything changed. Michael Douglas, in the guise of Wall Street power broker Gordon Gekko, proclaimed, "Greed is Good." These magic words opened the floodgates of Douchedom, whetting viewer’s appetites for all that was loud, selfish and posturing. Nowadays, films are overrun with characters afflicted with the scourge of male pattern badness: Vince Vaughn in Swingers, Owen Wilson in The Royal Tenenbaums, Bradley Cooper in The Hangover, just to name a few. Our panel of scintillating experts will explore the depths of today's Douchebag Revolution, its staggering economic model, what it means for the future of cinema and the ultimate question: Is High Douchebaggery the new Punk Rock?

Does HTML5 Offer a Montage Moment for Web Cinema?
Imagine if you could weave the sum of all human knowledge seamlessly into your film or documentary. New technologies like HTML5 make this possible. Video, audio and animation no longer need to be in a "black box", separate from other elements on a page. Recent works like The Wilderness Downtown, 3 Dreams of Black, and hypervideo experiments from Mozilla's Popcorn project point to a radical shift in how we think of moving images. In the same way that montage pioneers like Eisenstein and Griffiths showed us that new formal and technical possibilities could blow our perceptions of cinema wide open, this panel will bring examples and ideas that point to the storytelling potential when the web is fused with the power of cinema. The panel will include a brief presentation of a few innovative examples that feature high quality story and aesthetics as well as advanced technologies like: WebGL, Popcorn.js and the upcoming HTML Stream Processing API (an open standard for browser access to camera and microphone).

In The Cloud: Your Film in a Post-Ownership World
We are in the early stages of a massive paradigm shift that will forever change people's attitudes towards “consuming” film and TV. With shelves of books, video and music reincarnated in the Cloud, opportunities for indies are rapidly changing. A $10 gross profit on a DVD is now a nickel for a stream. The proliferation of digital platforms--with Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Netflix leading the charge--calls for nimbleness, flexibility and DIY savvy. These skills are old-hat to the indie producer. And as we know, connecting social media between your film and its audience is key. New Video moderates a panel of filmmakers and technology experts who will share their vision of the future, critical insights on new trends, and concrete strategies for survival in a post-ownership world. Specializing in indie, documentary and art house films, New Video distributes across streaming, downloading and cable VOD platforms and hard goods to a broad spectrum of stores and platforms.

Art and Advertising: Two Sides of the One Sheet
The movie poster is dead! Long live the movie poster! Such are the proclamations that have cycled through the decades as movie poster design has ebbed from art form to dumbed downed marketing piece. Sometimes it rises to the former with a significant push from designers like Saul Bass and Neil Kellerhouse, but most of the time it recedes into the latter, wrenched down by the generic photomontages of studio film posters. However, in the last decade there’s been an interesting new wave taking place that brings these two disparate sides of the one sheet together. It’s being harnessed by collectible art boutique Mondo and embodied by artists (and panelists) Sam Smith, Justin Erickson and Akiko Stehrenberger; who are all striving to make movie marketing as engaging as the movie it’s representing. So how did this new wave take place and will it last? Can studios learn to embrace art in advertising? And can artists balance the advertising in their art?

How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love VOD
Video On Demand is the fastest changing area of independent film distribution, with new companies and routes emerging every day, but is there money to be made by handling those rights alone? How do you go about it? What terms do companies offer? What will it cost to self-fund a theatrical to promote the VOD & DVD, what are the different VOD windows you need to exploit, and what kind of returns can be expected? American The Bill Hicks Story was an opening night film at SXSW 2010, and the filmmakers made the decision to theatrically release the film themselves day-and-date with VOD. The film was TopTen in iTunes Indy & Doc charts for almost two months, and is seeing significant returns from Pay-Per-View in 100 million homes on the Time Warner Comcast cable network. The filmmakers will take you through the process from festival premiere to VOD launch with actual numbers and input from their theatrical & VOD partners, an independent film rep and president of major distributor Magnolia Pictures.

Bringing Sexy Back: Where's the Line Today?
Back in the day, independent films were known for pushing the boundaries on depiction's of sexuality. But where do we stand today? A panel of filmmakers will discuss that line, along with thoughts on how a current crop of creators can embrace and highlight sexuality in their own works.

The panel will consider several key questions. Among them:
    · Where is "the line" in terms of what sexuality can be easily presented in indie film?
    · Is it possible to depict sex in a way that enhances the narrative rather than disrupts it?
    · How do I work with my cast/subjects, and also my crew, to create an environment where everyone feels safe -- yet where I still get the images I need?
    · Are there any considerations for potential distribution I should keep in mind?
    · And, of course, the all important… “What will my mother think?”!!

We'll discuss programs in the industry that assist filmmakers of diverse backgrounds, the importance and benefits of having a diverse cast and crew, festivals that encourage diverse stories and ways of marketing your project to the audiences who will embrace them the most. While there will be a direction to the conversation, audience participation is highly encouraged. So bring your questions and join panelists from Screen Actors Guild, Alliance of Women Directors, Troublemaker Studios (Spy Kids, Sin City, and Grindhouse) and the Producers Guild of America Diversity Committee for a lively and informative dialogue.

The Great White Whales of Music Docs
Every director and producer has a great white whale: the groundbreaking, fascinating, inspirational music documentary that just couldn't get made. Maybe the band got camera shy; maybe the music rights were controlled by an out-of-control lawyer; maybe the topic was too hot for film. Whatever the problem, this panel will feature producers and directors who will share war stories from their own failed projects and discuss their unmade/unfunded dream music documentaries. We'll also dish about famous forbidden footage (from bands like the Rolling Stones, Guns N Roses and more) and the prospects of those vaults being opened in our lifetimes. And we'll ask the audience to share their most desired music documentaries, the films they'd stand in line for at the theaters if only they could be made!

To 3D or Not to 3D. That is the Question.
The history of 3D movies has been a long but not necessarily distinguished one. Originally devised in the late 18th century in the very early days of movie making, it has had several bursts of popularity every decade since the 50’s but never became part of the mainstream. That is until 2009 when Avatar blew apart box office records with its use of the technology. Now it seems every major Hollywood release comes with a 3D version attached. Is this just a passing fascination with the possibilities of the latest technology, or is 3D a useful storytelling device that every filmmaker should be able to utilize? If it is the latter, then how can independent filmmakers fully exploit its possibilities? Producer of Avatar, Jon Landau, is taking a break from production on Avatar II and III to discuss the future of 3D in film and answer these questions and more.
