Oberhofer
    Monday March 12, 2012 5:00pm - 5:40pm @ Fader Fort (1101 E 5th St, Austin, TX 78702)

Ever since moving operations from his parent’s basement in Tacoma, Washington to Brooklyn, 20 year old Brad Oberhofer has been carefully honing his own brand of bedroom pop, which is as affecting and genuine as it is naively chaotic.
Charmingly skewed and ramshackle, Oberhofer’s classic, melody heavy indie rock sound manages to meld Brian Wilson sized hooks with expansive instrumentation and kooky, unpredictable song structures. The intense production mixes programmed drums with jittering live percussion and centers his exuberant yelps amongst keys, xylophones, whistles and washes of wall of sound guitar.

Dinosaur Feathers
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:25pm @ The Belmont (305 West 6th Street, Austin, TX, 78701)

With Whistle Tips, Brooklyn, NY quartet Dinosaur Feathers flee from the tropics of their debut, 2009’s Fantasy Memorial, and push themselves into hitherto unexplored and ultimately rewarding new territories. Once tethered to a drum machine, the addition of drummer Nick Brooks provides new-found forcefulness and flexibility; the clean melodic basslines of Ryan Michael Kiley often grow into dynamic leads without abandoning the low end; and where acoustic guitar once engendered laid-back vibes and folk misnomers, the electric guitar of vocalist Greg Sullo now drives with clear tones, a welcome crunch, and occasionally noisy outbursts. Evolution is, however, only a theory. For all you indie creationists, the Dinosaur Feathers you may have known and/or loved lives on through their sunny melodies, still-infectious grooves, and ever-boisterous harmonies between Sullo, Kiley, and keyboardist Derek Zimmerman. These elements, plus such seemingly disparate influences as The Soft Boys, The Olivia Tremor Control, XTC and of course Paul McCartney's Wings, now inform a jazzier/punkier/maybe even poppier mélange.

Ariane Moffatt
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Spill (212 E. 6th St.)
Ariane Moffatt is an adventurer. The Montreal singer-songwriter’s illustrious career is marked by curiosity ¬– sonic, musical and emotional – and it’s contagious. She has built a devoted following in Quebec over the past decade, making inroads to France with her evocative blend of electro, pop, soul and rock.
At the heart of her success is that voice – an instrument of arresting intimacy that tugs on your heartstrings as it floats through the atmosphere, at once earthy, ethereal and capable of surprising power.
Yet it is underwater that Moffatt makes her grand entrance, splashing onto the scene with her runaway 2002 debut Aquanaute. An entrancing collection of post-trip-hop confessionals blending acoustic and electronic textures, sung just above a whisper, the album strikes a chord. It sells 120,000 copies and wins three ADISQ Awards (Quebec’s Grammys) including Discovery of the Year and Pop-Rock Album of the Year.
Meanwhile, Moffatt is making her reputation as a mesmerizing performer, her live shows bringing a whole new dimension to her dreamy sound. The submersive audio-visual experience is captured on the live CD/DVD Ariane Moffatt à la Station C, which appears in 2005, six months before her second album, Le coeur dans la tête.
Without losing the lightness of her earlier material, the new work surprises with gritty forays into rock, reggae and drum-and-bass. Two things become immediately obvious: this girl can do anything; and, held together by her voice, it all fits.
“It’s like I want to master the essence of each kind of groove,” Moffatt says. “I want to submerge myself in these sounds; I feel more creative when I make stylistic clashes, borrowing ingredients from all kinds of things I love.”
At the heart of her inclusive vibe is an artistic integrity and emotional honesty that cut through her aesthetic choices.
“The emotion in a song is like the glue that picks it all up,” she says, “my identity, my personality, poetry. Maybe that’s my musical identity – that whole mix. I’m very sensitive; I ask a lot of questions. I listen to what’s happening inside myself and music is a great channel to express those feelings.”
Moffatt is introduced to the French public in February, 2006, opening for Alain Souchon at the fabled Olympia de Paris. Shortly after, Le coeur dans la tête is released in France, where her star continues to rise as she is taken under the wing of flamboyant pop songsmith M (aka Mathieu Chedid).
A few years later, Moffatt seduces the French public with Je veux tout, the irresistible hit single off her third album Tous les sens, released in April, 2008. The song cycle finds the singer dabbling in what she does best, from airy introspection to folky ragtime and funky electro.
The electronic elements of her music are highlighted on the followup EP Tous les sens - remix, featuring inspired reworkings of her songs by acclaimed Montreal techno artists Akufen, Deadbeat and Pheek. On the opposite end of the spectrum, in 2010 she releases Trauma – musique de la série TV, a collection of stripped down, English-language covers of songs by everyone from The Ronettes to Cat Power, Tom Waits, R.E.M. and Leonard Cohen recorded for the Grey’s Anatomy-style Quebec hospital drama.
Now, as she prepares to unveil her most ambitious album yet, Moffatt is more comfortable than ever with the various incarnations of her artistic expression.
“Music takes us places that aren’t in any guidebook or on a map,” she says. “It’s like a quest, a search for what is beautiful – to make tangible the things which cannot be named, to give substance to emotions and create a common denominator for everything people feel.”

Click-Clack
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ The Parish (214 E Sixth St Austin, TX)

Eric Mikulak, also known as Click-Clack, is a 21 year old self produced hip-hop and r&b vocalist. Growing up in Austin, Texas, Eric was exposed to and submerged in all different styles of music from an early age. As years passed listening became an obsession and eventually was no longer satisfactory. At the age of 12 he began experimenting with beat production and vocal sampling. Soon after, the age of Macintosh arose, and garage band swiftly became the apple of his eye. As producing beats and recording ate in to his study time, it quickly transitioned from a hobby into an infatuation. At 17, Click-Clack attended Mediatech Institute of Recording Arts and began working with professional producing/recording tools. Presently, he uses a combination of Reason, Recycle and Protools and is entirely self sufficient is his creation process. Eric's driving beats provide the canvas for his emotional, opinionated lyrics. As the front man for several local bands, he has performed at many of Austin's most renown venues, including Stubb’s, The Mohawk, and The Parish. Now hitting the stage solo, his energy and stage presence combine to create a intense experience for viewers and listeners. GET YOU SUM.

David Liebe Hart Band
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ The Jr (603 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)

Musician, sign-painter, puppeteer, and actor David Liebe Hart has been a cult personality since 1988, when he first began producing The Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson Program on public access cable. After a stint in Vietnam, Liebe Hart moved to Los Angeles in the 70’s, where he claims to have been roommates with Robin Williams, passed over for jobs by Garry Marshall, and abducted by aliens (all frequent song topics of his). Liebe Hart has also become a familiar sight to Hollywood Bowl patrons, who show up early before shows to catch him crooning outside with his puppets. During the holidays, his colorful Christmas artwork can be found on store windows across Southern California. With such an impressive resume, it wasn’t long before Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim cast Liebe Hart it sing his bizarre songs on their hit Cartoon Network show, Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job!.
In 2008 he teamed up with musician Adam Papagan. The two started recording and releasing albums regularly, with song topics ranging from Liebe Hart getting bad service at the grocery store, to his many ex-girlfriends. This spring, David Liebe Hart, backed by Papagan and a full band, will hit the road on a national tour to spread his message of intergalactic tolerance. 2012 will see a new studio album by the band and a full US Tour this Summer.

King Stork
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ BD Riley's (204 E. 6th St.)

King Stork was started by four guys with long backgrounds in music, as an excuse to drink beer and blow off steam playing Strokes and Ventures covers after work. By the beginning of 2011, the band was working on new material and resurrecting old original songs, and the covers became fewer and fewer. What emerged is a brand of intricate, highly-composed rock that at times hits with heavy gravitas, and other times backs off and presents itself alternately as twangy, anthemic and sweet - think Pavement meets Surfer Blood meets Neil Young. Songs written by guitarist/singers Robbie Whelan and Dan Schneier and bassist/singer Matt Oliver cover lyrical territory from the dark, to the imagistic, to the sentimental and back. King Stork is based in New York City. Their name comes from the politically subversive, proto-libertarian Aesop fable, "The Frogs Who Desired a King."

Salt to Bitters
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

    Salt to Bitters
From lilt to lurch, from swagger to stagger, Salt To Bitters crashes its way across a bittersweet soundscape in fits and starts, tempering depravity with a tunefulness that could only have been born in the desperate hours between last call and first light. Tony T. Raver's moods range from wry to agonized, his alcohol-drenched musings on liquored-up love and the loss thereof emerging both poignant and raucous. His eclectic assemblage of Chapel Hill music veterans follow his every move with a funereal kaleidoscope of plinking banjo, mournful violin ribbons, ominous Rhodes piano, drums that shamble and crash. Formed in 2008, Salt To Bitters has carved its niche as the Triangle's foremost purveyors of late-night despair, playing a host of live shows a cross North Carolina.

Adam & the Bullshark
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ BD Riley's (204 E. 6th St.)
After twelve years of making music on the road and at home, local darlings Cruiserweight disbanded in 2010. Siblings Stella and Urny Maxwell took a brief pause from the spotlight and international touring and then jumped head first into a new project- Adam and the Bullshark. Half rock band, half original musical stageplay for kids of all ages, the undertaking is ambitious, to say the least. While never dismissing the sincerity or success of their former band, the Maxwells agree: Their new venture has teeth.
What started as a silly story about a strawberry jam-loving bullshark years ago (made up in a Pre-K classroom where Stella taught at the time,) has evolved over seven years, where now the goal of producing "Adam and the Bullshark" into a full-scale musical is rapidly coming into focus. Anyone who knows Cruiserweight's former lead vocalist is well aware of her big ideas' tendencies to snowball... big time. So...
Once she realized that her dream of bringing the story to life would be an impossible feat by herself, Stella recruited Urny, along with friends Chepo and Terry, to begin arranging her vivid and sometimes harebrained plot into song-form. The result is something familiar, in that the outfit resembles Cruiserweight sometimes, in sound, lineup, and the venues they frequent. But Adam and the Bullshark is different in that it transcends norms and trends, (I mean, until U2 writes songs for a musical-- OH, CRAP!) I guess it's still cool, though, because most bands won't attempt to write a script and album of songs that can tell a clear story, right? Even if they DO attempt it, most bands won't do it well. MOST bands...
With bullshark pinatas on display and party favors to boot, Adam and the Bullshark's shows are punk-rock and grandiose at the same time, but always captivating. Whether appealing to beer-swigging 20-something's at Emo's or elementary school-aged kids on the "Kiddie Limits" stage at ACL, Adam and the Bullshark fits right in with an audience looking to be entertained. A tight schedule of shows as well as plans to record the musical score in early 2012 are under way.

Dustin Wong
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Swan Dive (615 Red River St)
"When I begin to explore and to build a song through a series of pedals, I begin with the tuner. It helps keep my guitar's pitch consistent. An octave pedal and the distortion pedals allows me to change the textures and colors of the guitar. The delay pedal determines the tempo and the pattern. Once these sounds are determined, it then gets replicated and repeated through a loop pedal. Repeating that process, I lay different sounds and melodies on top. After the loop pedal comes the envelope filter that changes the color of the sounds but in a different way, more like a blend or like a dye. At the end of this chain of pedals awaits another delay pedal that corresponds to the delay pedal before the looper, further accentuating and changing the patterns of the loop.

Il abanico is an Indie/Experimental band created in 2010 by Nicolás Losada (guitar) and Juliana Ronderos (Voice). They expose their personalities with innovative melodies, an upbeat rhythm section and unorthodox guitars. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, this duo spent fall of 2010 composing what would become their first work “Crossing Colors” (February 2011). A 5 songs EP, recorded in well renowned Studio G (temporal studio for the Black Keys) in Brooklyn, NY.
Established in Boston MA, and playing around the east coast area, Il abanico started to play with a full band. The new band members captured the attention of many blogs and interviews because of their diverse nationalities. Il abanico has grown rapidly, and in September 2011 they toured their way across the US from Boston to LA where they have now settled. It was a successful 18-date tour which included cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Austin, San Diego and Los Angeles, amongst others. Having played over 60 shows this year, il abanico is currently living and working in LA, performing and writing material for their new album.

Incan Abraham
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Hype Hotel (504 Trinity Street, Austin, TX 78701)

Incan Abraham was founded in a garage in Rhinebeck, New York, in June 2009. In the fall of that year, the band relocated to Los Angeles, the hometown of three of its members, and Teddy, the only New Yorker, moved out West for the band. Since then, the band has released three EPs, Adult World (2010) and SUNSCREEN (2011), and Ancient Vacation (2011), and maintained a constant stream of live shows in Southern California, as well as more far-flung appearances at CMJ (2010, 2011), San Francisco’s Noise Pop Festival (2011, 2012), and SXSW 2011.

With a sound at once welcoming and exotic, Incan Abraham has received praise from NPR, TIME Magazine, and a number of respected local, national and foreign blogs. Earlier this year, the band launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new series of recordings. The fruit of that effort, a new short-form album titled Ancient Vacation, was released in October 2011. On the strength of this release, Incan Abraham has been able to take its sound to its largest stages to date, including the ASCAP showcase at CMJ 2011, an appearance at the Wiltern with Beady Eye in December, and a month-long residency at Los Angeles' Bootleg Theater in February 2012.

New Town Drunks music has been described as New Vaudeville, Rock and Roll Cabaret, Stream of Consciousness Folk Rock, a musical Bonnie and Clyde and other less clear descriptions. At the core of it is the show-stopping voice and stage presence of lead singer Diane Koistinen, the versatile Spanish guitar of Roberto Cofresi and a batch of carefully crafted songs, but there is always more to every performance, melodrama, mystery, comedy, tragedy, surprises... and they always seem to find themselves in the company of great talent. Who will join them on stage at SXSW? Come to the No More Fake Labels showcase to find out.

Scorpio Rising
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Headhunters (720 Red River Austin, TX)

Scorpio Rising is an electro/dance/rock band from Austin, Texas, whose recordings and intense live performances have made them one of Austin’s premiere entertainment commodities. Hailed as one of Austin’s best Goth/Industrial bands and DJ bands by the Austin Chronicle Music Poll,
Scorpio Rising’s fans have likened their sound to The Rolling Stones meet Scissor Sisters, with vocals reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper, Shirley Manson, and Madonna, polished with a touch of Motown.
Scorpio Rising started in the mid 1990’s as a side project of Austin Funk outfit Retarted Elf’s vocalist/dancer Madame Scorpio and guitarist Wonderbred. The two had compiled a huge catalogue of new material and wanted to take it to the stage. Scorpio Rising has built a diverse and loyal fan base throughout Texas, playing consistently in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Belton, Dallas, Bryan/College Station and Corpus Christi. Festival appearances include the Central Texas State Fair, SXSW showcase, 10th Annual GoGirls Music Fest, 2010 & 2011 Art Outside Festival and 2009 & 2011 Eeyores birthday party.
Scorpio Rising’s debut recording, Scorpio Tales was written, recorded and produced by Wonderbred and Madame Scorpio. Their sophomore effort, Vain Bastard was a full band effort and included songs “Get It Up” and “Eerie,” which have both enjoyed publishing success and can be heard on The Discovery Network, a compilation CD release from the WB network, clothing ads, and video game song distribution.
The band’s release of Feels Good was in July 2008 to rave reviews by fans and critics alike. An EP, The last one Standing, was released May 2010, after Madame Scorpio battled Breast Cancer.
Scorpio Rising’s current line-up includes Madame Scorpio on vocals, Wonderbred on bass and guitar
D.J. Bixler on drums. This incarnation has been performing, touring and recording together for the past five years.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Trinity Hall (401 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Cory Dennis, Todd Harris, and Aaron Miller's first glimpse of success came in high school with The El Guapos, an indie-rock outfit that disbanded after three years of packed Austin venues, a capacity performance at the 2009 NAMM SXSW-Underage showcase, and a botched European record deal. While Miller and Harris studied at The University of Texas, Dennis honed his recording and production skills, founding Indie Fort Studios and receiving acclaim for his work with award-winning baroque-pop group, Mother Falcon. The three remained best friends and it wasn't long before they embarked on another musical project, this time experimenting with pop and electronic music. They called it Sphynx.

The Apache Relay
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ The Bat Bar (218 E 6th St)
The Apache Relay was formed by chance in a Nashville college dorm when Michael Ford Jr. (vocals, bass) met Mike Harris (guitar, vocals). Ford Jr. happened to be looking for some musicians to help perform his own music live, when he heard about Harris’ newly formed band, The Apache Relay. Ford Jr. hired the trio, which also included Brett Moore (keys, guitar, mandolin) and Kellen Wenrich (fiddle), to back him at a show and it was immediately evident that the four musicians had a unique chemistry and were on to something special.

The four-piece released their debut LP titled 1988 in 2009. Produced by Doug Williams, (renowned for his authentically raw approach with the Avett Brothers) the record was lauded by Paste Magazine as one of “The Eight Most Auspicious Musical Debuts of 2009”. The band’s ability to effortlessly blend acoustic sounds with ferocious rock anthem elements only hinted at the band’s capabilities.

Union Specific
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Skinny's Ballroom (115 San Jacinto Blvd. Austin, TX 78701)
Union Specific began in the summer of 2008 in Sherman TX,
where singers/songwriters Tyler Wallace and Gregg Maher
attended Austin College, a small liberal arts university. The two
had long known of each other's songwriting endeavors, but they would not begin making music together until late in their junior year, when Tyler approached Gregg to play with him in a talent show. The two soon realized that they had a palpable combination when they put their talents together. What came out was a medley of hard driving roots country mixed with thoughtful indie melodies, a combination resulting in bona fide Americana. The boys got together a group of friends and were soon playing every dive in North Texas. The joints were rough, but, through these experiences, the two developed a love for the informality of the grungy, smoke-filled venues and wished to incorporate that into their sound as well as their live show.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:20pm - 9:50pm @ Flamingo Cantina (515 East 6th Street Austin, TX)

Thesis Sahib/James Kirkpatrick has been contributing to the underground hip hop movement for the past fifteen years, both as an innovative rapper and a well known graffiti artist. His articulate, rapid-fire delivery, harmonic vocals and imaginative lyrics have graced an impressive catalogue of sought after releases on CD and vinyl. His art and music incorporate sculpture, kinetic, and auditory elements. Often combining both 2D aesthetic with circuit-bent electronic toys, compositions written on modified Gameboys, a face mask costume fitted with a heavily effected microphone and circuit-bent sounds have become part of his music and on-stage performances.

Sometimes, preconceived notions can be good; the comfort of expectations met is often a welcomed feeling. For the more adventurous among us, though, the best part of defined expectations and preconceived notions is having them broken, shattered even, in a good way. Enter: The Niceguys, a four-member Houston-based group with Southern roots and musical sensibilities that stretch far beyond the city’s limits. Brimming with confidence and creativity, Arrow sees Heartless Bastards pushing their distinctive sound forward with their most eclectic, energetic collection thus far. The album – the Austin, Texas-based band’s first release with Partisan Records – is marked as ever by singer/guitarist/songwriter Erika Wennerstrom’s remarkable voice, at turns primal and pleading, heartfelt and heroic. Songs like “Parted Ways” and the searing “Low Low Low” expertly capture the Bastards’ multi-dimensional rock in all its strength and spirit. Following upon the difficult introspection of 2009′s acclaimed third album, The Mountain, Arrow stands as a powerhouse new beginning for Heartless Bastards.

The Cowboys, the Grassy Knoll, J.R. Ewing, the Stanky Leg… Dallas, Texas, is known for lots of things. Progressive, forward-thinking hip-hop has, until now, not been one of them. That’s all starting to change, thanks to A.Dd+ (spoken aye-dee-dee). The quirky yet streetwise, fun-loving yet dead serious duo of Paris Pershun (a.k.a. 24-year-old Arrias Walls) and Slim Gravy (Dionte Rembert, 24), moves easily between slang anthems (“Likeamug”), light-hearted stories about drug addiction (“Can’t Come Down”/”Erica & Jamie”), and weighty raps about father figures and Black male incarceration (“Momma’s Brother”). Their 2011 LP When Pigs Fly has earned them praise from national media outlets including XXL and Pitchfork, which described the duo as “the rapper and the poet, the spawn of UGK and OutKast, combining street and cerebral.”

Little Lo
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ Trinity Hall (401 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

From Zoe Cordes Selbin, The Austin Chronicle:

"I just told my mom that we're official showcasing artists at South by Southwest for the first time," says Stephanie Groudle, violinist of Little Lo. "She was so proud, and reminisced about dropping me off to volunteer at the Festival just a few years ago. I was so stoked to be a part of the Festival, and now I'm playing officially.

"It never dawned on me that I'd get to do this!"

The excitement within Little Lo almost rivals the excitement of its audiences. These young locals have been sweeping Austin with their lush indie rock. Featuring dual male-female vocals, a folk tinge, and complex instrumentation, Little Lo's hitting on all cylinders.

"We've gone on tours of the East and West Coast, and it's really nice to get out and play music for other people," says singer/guitarist Ryan McGill. "It's inspirational for songwriting to realize that people who live more than 50 miles away from you will hear your songs."

Bigger fan bases aside, the local sixpiece knows there's no place like home.

"It's amazing just to be part of the Austin scene right now," enthuses saxophonist Ian Rogers. "Seeing other bands in Austin pushes me to be better. Moving here has made me become the musician that I never thought I could be."

Indeed, while none of the members of Little Lo are native Austinites, they all feel very passionate about the city. "We're extremely grateful to have Austin as a home, and there's no other city I'd rather play music in," says McGill.

Post-SXSW plans include recording a 7-inch single, but for now, the band is focused on making the most of the Fest.

"I want to see all the people and music, and meet everyone," says Rogers. "South by Southwest is so exciting –the hustle and bustle of the music industry, art, and everything meets in this tiny area. It's so fun to go and just immerse yourself in all of it!"

Rogers pauses and grins before continuing.

"I'm excited to pretend I'm famous for a week."

Marmalakes
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ The Parish (214 E Sixth St Austin, TX)

    Doug Freeman, The Austin Chronicle:

Amid the nascent pop scene emerging in Austin over the past few years, Marmalakes has found its music at an ideal intersection, balancing exuberant live shows and contemplative, intelligent songwriting. The local trio of Chase Weinacht, Josh Halpern, and Max Colonna, all in their early 20s, delivers folk pop with both a youthful restlessness and eye for detail.

"We're certainly surrounded by an energetic and enthusiastic group of creative folks," offers Weinacht. "As far as impressions, I honestly don't believe that anyone in our community of bands would say their No. 1 goal is 'I want to be famous.' I think the general feeling of all these folks is 'Let's make the best music we know how to make.'

"These bands – Mother Falcon, Little Lo, Hello Wheels, the Sour Notes – we're all playing with pop structures unabashedly. We're all working hard. As far as how Marmalakes fit it into it musically, I think we're wordier than most."

That focus on the live experience and investment in nurturing a scene has helped build an impressive community of both musical collaboration and fans, capped lastmonth at the Mohawk with Marmalakes' split 7-inch release with fellow locals the Sour Notes. With an eye toward releasing its third EP in April, Marmalakes continues to hone its sound, building on 2010's impressive debut Wonder Winds and last year's more adventurous arrangements of Even Clothed.

"The reason our second EP is a bit more exploratory is because we had a better idea of what it means to put together a record," Weinacht surmises. "Since we'd been a live-oriented band for a good while, with Wonder Winds we wanted to try to present our live energy while at the same time keeping it interesting enough for some replay value.

"With Even Clothed, we were able to play around a bit more. I think we felt more adapted to the studio environment altogether, and due to the opportunities we've been given to play lots of different kinds of shows, we've made a handful of different arrangements of each song, and with the Even Clothed version we felt we had to be definitive."

Mass Solo Revolt
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

Michigander Martin Brummeler moved to Athens, GA in 2000 and began writing music under the moniker Mass Solo Revolt. His previous bands Data Cadet, and Propeller had released records in the late '90s on Fred Thomas'(Saturday Looks Good to Me) West West Side records and Joel Wick's (Michigan Fest) Makoto Recordings.
In 2005, Brummeler sent a recording to Silver Sonya Mastering in Washington, D.C.. It caught the ear of Dischord Records’ Ian MacKaye, who suggested a collaboration between Brummeler and Dismemberment Plan engineer/producer Chad Clark. Recruiting drummer Andrew Becker (Medications) and playing the rest of the instruments himself, Brummeler spent 2 weeks writing, recording, and sleeping on the Inner Ear couch. The result was the first "officially released" MSR album... EASY MARK. (self-released). The album garnered much critical praise including features on NPR and ALL MUSIC GUIDE among others. Martin actually ended up moving to D.C. for a year (2006) to work at Inner Ear and Silver Sonya as an engineer and producer. Moving back to Athens in 2007, Brummeler went to work on the 2nd MSR album with longtime friend and musical partner Jim Frye. Self-recording and producing in his home studio, and including the good friends he'd pressed into service as touring bandmates (Jim Frye, David Harrison, and Russell Sherman), in both writing and performance on the album. This sophmore effort, BEND IN TIME, (released in 2009 on Hop Skip Recordings) was also well-received in the press, and furthered Mass Solo Revolt's reputation as masters of “sonically muscular, rhythmically angular and effortlessly melodic-guitary, poprock-n-roll of the superbestest kind”.
2010 found Brummeler and bandmates dealing with adult issues like unemployment, foreclosures, and 3 year olds... Brummeler moved home to Michigan, and scrapped a live band in place of a sampler, allowing him to perform with all the bombast of a live group, without the human bullshit involved in keeping a band together. A new association with Chapel Hill anti-label NO MORE FAKE LABELS has already brought more attention (see his GBV cover on the label's "Sing For Your Meat:A Tribute to Guided By Voices", and read about his killer set performed at this year's CMJ Music Festival) to the man/band oft-called "the greatest 90's band not actually from the '90s".

Quiet Company
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ The Main (603 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)

    Quiet Company
Quiet Company is from Austin , Texas — a city rich in musical diversity, enormous talent and
towering musical history—but the quintet brings their own unique brand of indie power pop that
sets them apart. What started as a solo project of prolific frontman Taylor Muse eventually grew
to a full band with the addition of Tommy Blank (Guitar), Matt Parmenter (Bass), Jeff Weathers
(Drums) and Cody Ackors (Trombone). Quiet Company has forged a familiar yet unique
celebratory pop-rock sound layered with introspective lyrics that explore love, death and incisive
    observations about human nature.
2010 was a breakout year of sorts for the five-piece group upon the release of “Songs for
Staying In”, which features singles that landed regular rotations on almost every rock and
pop radio station in Austin, and TV placements on MTV’s The Real World: New Orleans,
E! Channel’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The hard-earned buzz earned them a live
taping in Austin City Limits Studio 6a, as well as acting roles (as themselves) on ABC’s former
    documentary drama My Generation.
The band’s latest endeavor, “We Are All Where We Belong”—mixed by legendary engineer
Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, U2, The Cure)—chronicles the many different emotions that a person
goes through in a break up: sadness, resentment, self-doubt, but ultimately hope and the
indescribable joy and freedom that comes from the realization of making the right decision.
“It is easily the most personal thing I’ve ever written,” Muse said. “It is, essentially, a break up
record, only the romance that’s ending was between myself and religion.”
Musically, the album maintains the band’s richly arranged, consistently catchy pop hooks and
encompassing vocal harmonies but explores new territory with full orchestral arrangements and
new sonic textures. Lyrically, the album is a departure from the former “Songs For Staying In”
but the juxtaposition of heavier lyrical content and their trademarked upbeat sound makes for an
    engaging, above-the-cut musical experience.
Quiet Company recently teamed up with Grooveshark and Rocket Science to release the new
album. Leveraging the strengths of both companies to spearhead a truly progressive music
marketing endeavor, the relationship provides a realistic strategy to provide a road map that
artists can use to achieve success in a rapidly changing industry.
Since the band’s inception in 2005, Quiet Company has traveled the country far and wide,
logging more than 400 shows since 2007 including performing in front of 10,000 people at
KGSR’s annual Blues On The Green in Zilker park, several sold out shows at House of Blues
and have had the opportunity to share the stage with bands such as Toadies, Rooney, Evan
Dando and Bob Schneider among others.
From the band’s inception through their rapid growth, the goal has never changed: To write
intelligent, epic pop music that shines with honesty and provokes self-reflection.

Behind a whirlwind of blond hair and tempestuous guitar licks, Lauren Larson leads this Austin trio in an assault of virtuosic rock. Last year's sophomore LP, Phantoms, finally captured the band's powerhouse live performance, coursing with a fevered but tightly wound rush of heavy melodic shoegaze as Eric Larson's heady bass provides an anchoring counterpoint to the frontwoman's breathy vocals and flailing riffs.

Ian Moore is a singer/guitarist/songwriter who has released 10 full length records. He has opened for the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Weller, and countless others. He has appeared in films such as Billy Bob Thorton's movie Slingblade, and crisscrossed the world many times in support of his releases. In the last years he has also moonlit as a sideman for artists as diverse Jason Mraz and Roky Erickson, while starting a company, Madrona music, that focuses on film scoring.
Ian's music is rare in its scope and diversity, and he has reinvented himself with every release.
Well known in his early years for his fiery, bluesy guitar playing, and soulful singing, he was anointed at a young age as an Austin legend
His inquisitive and ambitious spirit has led him to greatly eclipse the songwriting and musical latitude of his early release.
His latest release, El Sonido, Nuevo, finds him digging deeper into the realms of power pop/psych rock, while maintaining his core musical values. 'El Sonido' is a collaborative release, written with Matt Harris(Posies, Oranger) and the music reflects their collective musical visions. The current show is visceral, tight, laden with harmony and taut musical arrangement. Guitar is featured, but borrowing equally from the likes of Richard Thompson and Tom Verlaine, and the songs borrow but never steal. The music doesn't surf the wave of desperate modern trends, but swims freely beyond the waves, imbued with the music of deep record collections, but maintaining a musical vision of now

Bear in Heaven
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Mohawk Patio (912 Red River St)

Most people assume that when a band makes it—that is, reaches a critical mass of listeners, where shows across the country get packed, where the big festivals come calling, where placement on year-end lists seems preemptively settled—the work stops. It’s as if all the hours spent writing and rehearsing, tacking flyers to utility poles or maintaining forever-multiplying social media platforms suddenly switch off as some vaunted rock-star lifestyle switches on. And in some cases, maybe it does; then again, Bear in Heaven’s never been about easy expectations of normalcy.
After the release of their second album, 2010’s Beast Rest Forth Mouth, big things began to happen for the Brooklyn trio of Jon Philpot, Joe Stickney and Adam Wills, from the aforementioned accolades to an electrifying collection of remixes featuring some of electronic music’s heaviest hitters, like The Field and Studio. As if in a transatlantic dream, they even split a single with Norway’s Lindstrøm and Christabelle, who covered their calling card, “Lovesick Teenagers.” But Bear in Heaven didn’t settle for the new well of notoriety they’d opened. Rather, they played some 200 shows in support of Beast Rest Forth Mouth—touring the world, playing progressively bigger rooms, building an intricate stage show that turned an album of songs into a synesthetic experience. When it was over, they retrenched in Brooklyn and, during the dead of summer, retreated to a chilly practice space to work harder than they’d ever worked on any other project. They wrote, re-wrote, arranged, re-arranged, spending days or weeks building one song at a time. After months of testing their limits and trusting their instincts, Bear in Heaven emerged with I Love You, It’s Cool, an album so vivid and visionary that it meets and even exceeds the confidence and calm its title suggests.
For years, Bear in Heaven existed as a nights-and-weekends band, the sort of project that was more of a casual hobby than a career path for a few Southern natives who’d been living in the city for years. As such, they associated more with New York’s experimental vanguards, whether playing at the late, great Tonic or touring as a backbone for composer Rhys Chatham. But in 2010, Beast Rest Forth Mouth delighted listeners with the unexpected—futuristic rock music that didn’t sound alien or bound to ostracize. Taking these songs from coast to coast and continent to continent, they learned that having fun with this music was copacetic, that they could delight a crowd while defying musical binaries. I Love You, It’s Cool turns that realization into a peerless set of instant anthems.
“You come off of a tour, and you have ideas of what you found yourself enjoy playing over the last years,” says Wills. “It felt good when people would dance. We tried to turn that into a record, to emphasize that. But there’s still an absolute need to take the pop song and ruin it.”
Indeed, some of these songs are ready for the floor. On “Sinful Nature,” a perfect, tiny guitar theme spirals through colossal drums and slabs of synthesizers, suggesting perpetual motion. “Cool Light” booms with bliss, icy keyboards reflecting off of a relentless throb. It’s inescapable.
But the intricacy and edge of Bear in Heaven’s music is not only here but sharper and more sophisticated than ever before. Philpot’s programming is both complex and compelling, whether in the refracted rainbows he warps on “Kiss Me Crazy” or the noisy matrix he weaves across “Space Remains.” Certainly, “The Reflection of You” feels like a hit, with a hook that instantly catches and a bridge that curls its finger—lyrically, stylistically, temptingly—toward the dance floor. Philpot’s mix of nostalgia and need is immediately relatable, too, bringing the band’s exploratory sounds a little closer back to home. But the song exits in a moment space-rock ascendance, a readymade rock-club banger that erupts into a bold new direction.
I Love You, It’s Cool is the first time Bear in Heaven has sounded so unapologetic and so evolved, so risky and so redeeming, so focused and so finessed. After years of restless exploration, this feels like a definitive arrival. I Love You, It’s Cool is music written in the present tense but ready to speak to the future. The work is its own rarified reward.
“We are a functioning band. We can work full-time on a record. We’re all focused on this one thing that we’re going to make, with no sidestepping,” says Philpot. “Making this record has been one of the best times of my life.”
David Wrench engineered and mixed I Love You, It’s Cool during two months at New York’s DNA. Roberto Lange, Rhys Chatham, James Elliott and Agathe Max contributed to the sounds. Dead Oceans and Hometapes will partner to co-release I Love You, It’s Cool on April 3, 2012.

Future of the Left
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto)

Future Of The Left’s upcoming album, The Plot Against Common Sense, will be the group’s third full-length release. Teased with the Polymers Are Forever EP released in late 2011, this album will expand on the band’s razor sharp and brash sound. Pitchfork.com proclaimed, “It’s been far, far too long since we last heard from Welsh rabblerousers Future of the Left, with 2009’s awesome Travels With Myself and Another being their last missive.”
Three years later, Future of the Left is ready to release new material under a new label and with a new lineup. The quartet parted ways with 4AD last year and welcomed Julia Ruzicka (bass) to the FOTL crew, which currently consists of former Mclusky members and FOTL cofounders, Andrew Falkous (vocals and guitar) and Jack Egglestone (drums), as well as Jimmy Watkins (guitar). “This certainly isn’t the sound of a shaken band though: time away from the studio has seen the members dig further into their unclassifiable, noisy nook” said BBC.com of Polymers Are Forever.
With the full-length’s release date fast-approaching, “perennial industry curmudgeons” should rejoice, said CMJ.com. Fans’ smiles should be extended even further with news of Future of the Left’s upcoming worldwide tour plans spanning 2012.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Valhalla (710 Red River St)

“Whenever Boston’s delinquent nephew Worcester comes up in conversation, we can’t help but form the mental image of some sort of devastated city-scape straight out of an arcade beat-em-up, ala Final Fight or Streets of Rage, where everyone just goes around supplexing each other and eating chicken legs off the ground. While this is likely untrue, and undoubtedly insulting, in our defense, SynthRock heros HERRA TERRA aren’t really helping things by making the perfect sort of music to spin-kick by."

But there is something slightly fierce about the opening seconds of Lex Land’s new album “Were My Sweetheart To Go”. It’s the track “Oh My!” and it just reaches out and grabs you, then descends into a sweet sing song chorus complete with a chipper hand clap beat. Music Director Jason Bentley is a big fan, saying he likes that you can hear her operatic training, her focus before pursuing a life of pop. “She’s a great songwriter. She makes herself very vulnerable and her lyrics are revealing about relationships and all those universal themes we love.” “She really separates herself from the pack with her demeanor and her lyrics. She’s got attitude, she’s cool.”

Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Empire Automotive ( 604—606 E 7th St, Austin TX)
Tyler Bryant lives for music. Passionate about expressing himself and connecting with others through his songs and sounds, Tyler moved to Nashville from Honey Grove, TX when he was 17 to write songs and start a band. He has pushed the musical limits of guitar, vocals, and performance, and has captured the attention of the music scene with his spectacular talent and rare showmanship.

Tyler Bryant, currently 20 years old, is a guitar prodigy who has shared the stage with Aerosmith, Jeff Beck, Heart, REO Speedwagon, Paul Simon, BB King, Pat Benatar, The Arc Angels, Vince Gill and many others. At age 15, Tyler won the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation's New Generation Award, which recognized him as one of the most promising new artists on the music scene. He has also performed at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago, and was signed by John Huie at Creative Artists Agency on the spot, after his first showcase in Nashville.

Tyler recalls a musical turning point at age 11, when he walked into a music store in Paris, Texas and heard 63-year old bluesman, Roosevelt Twitty, on guitar. “He was playing a Lightning Hopkins song,” Tyler says. “He was just sitting in the corner of Holly Bond’s Music store, and was singing and playing with such emotion that something translated deeply, and I wanted to understand. I knew I wanted to play. Whenever you hear someone with that much soul, when they really believe what they are playing, it’s so inspiring.”

Tyler’s musical influences include the inspirations of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, The Black Crowes, and Jeff Beck.

Tyler, along with Beck, Santana, and Slash, is featured in the award winning film, “Rock Prophecies,” which is directed by John Chester, and produced by Tim Kaiser (Seinfeld and Will & Grace). “Rock Prophecies,” is now airing nationally on PBS and is available on DVD. Also, this past year, thousands of kid’s across the world have been playing Tyler’s song, “Who I Am,” since its release on Guitar Hero® 5.

Tyler has been busy recording and songwriting with some of Nashville’s best. He released his first EP, “My Radio” in March of 2011 and finished and released his most recent album, “From The Sandcastle,” in late September. He is currently writing songs for his next album, which he and his band will start recording in February 2012.

Tyler recently announced a new band name, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, as he wanted to recognize his band in everything he does. Tyler and the band embarked on their headlining tour this past summer and continued touring well into November. The band only paused for the month of October, while Tyler opened for Jeff Beck on his Canadian and US Tour. Tyler & the Shakedown are currently getting plans together for a big upcoming year, which will include tour dates all around North America and Europe. With a fearless obsession for his art, Tyler Bryant is advancing his music without limits.

Yellow Ostrich
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ The Bat Bar (218 E 6th St)

The focal point of Yellow Ostrich's magnificent debut the mistress is Wisconsin native Alex Schaaf's voice. On the mistress it gets looped and layered, stretched and manipulated; it's stacked up several high and, most often, it's used as an instrument, fleshing out the empty spaces in his bare, searching songs. The album was originally recorded (largely by Schaaf himself with occasional help from a few friends) and given very limited release online for free via his Bandcamp site before he hooked up with now-fulltime bandmates Jon Natchez (bass, horns, vocals) and Michael Tapper (drums, vocals) in New York. Fully remastered and with the addition of three brand new tracks recorded by the trio, Barsuk's release of the mistress marks the album's first broad availability digitally, and its first time on compact disc.

Peanut Butter Wolf
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:15pm - 12:00am @ Elysium (705 Red River St 78701)

From Luke Winkie, The Austin Chronicle:

Stones Throw founder Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, has been putting out albums he thought sounded cool since 1996. That's a feat. His label's presence at South by Southwest reflects its consistent, refined taste.

"There was one time during South by where I was basically marooned with a stack of records and no transportation," he chuckles. "Me and J Rocc were walking blocks and blocks trying to hail a cab. Eventually, we ended up on one of those pedicabs.

    "We laugh about it now."

For Manak, SXSW is about business. A place to break newer troops, an attempt to hustle up the same sort of underground profitability his more famous investments in MF Doom and Madlib have been blessed with.

"We haven't had a lot of success with rap recently," he explains. "I stand by what we've put out, but the sales haven't been the same. I'm not going to stop releasing hip-hop because we don't have the same fan base."

Talking with Manak, you get the sense this man is running a label for his own enjoyment. When we talk about Stones Throw's much-touted subscription service, a monthly fee to get the imprint's music delivered directly to your inbox, he says it simply sounded – again – like a cool idea and was thoroughly surprised by all the attention it earned.

"I started this label because I wanted to release records I liked," he reiterates. "I've been a collector of music for a long time, I've got around 10,000 records. I really couldn't see myself doing anything besides this."

Tycho is the music project of San Francisco artist and producer Scott Hansen. As Tycho, Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend into the horizon. Known in the design world as ISO50, Hansen is famed for his bucolic, sun-drenched design style, which serves as a backdrop and mirror for his musical output. Hansen began his electronic-music career with 2002’s The Science of Patterns EP , which was followed in 2004 by his first full length, Sunrise Projector.

Schaffer the Darklord
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:45pm - 12:15am @ Flamingo Cantina (515 East 6th Street Austin, TX)

Schaffer the Darklord (or STD) is a New York City-based rapper and comedian with material best-suited for brainy and/or drug-addled audiences. With manic energy, verbose vocabulary and cartoonishly commanding stage presence, STD skewers such topics as religious zombies, sci-fi sex fantasies, grammar snobbery and obsessive cat-enthusiasts. Imagine a Frankenstein-esque monster assembled from equal p...arts Bill Hicks, Eminem, Prince, Ozzy Osbourne and Darth Vader, stitched together inside the shell of a maniacal heavy metal ex-patriot. STD has released three full-length albums and toured the country with mc chris, MC Frontalot and MC Lars. When he's not on the road, he guest hosts countless burlesque events. He also co-produces and co-hosts his own nerdy, themed production, Epic Win Burlesque. His releases (2004's "Meet My Maker," 2007's "Mark of the Beast" and 2009's "Manslaughterer") have been treated to steady sales and second pressings, and the music video for his single "The Rappist" has garnered a half million views on YouTube. STD continues to write, record and perform with great frequency and has no intention of giving up until his masochist rock-n-roll lifestyle destroys him.

Flux Pavilion
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:55pm - 12:45am @ La Zona Rosa (612 W 4th St)

It's hard sometimes to grasp how quickly Josh Steele – Flux Pavilion – has risen to the position he's now in. Only three years ago, in the autumn of 2008, he heard dubstep played for the very first time at a freshers' party (Caspa and Rusko's legendary 'Fabric 37' album, to be precise), and was blown away by it. Just a couple of days later, he had the first fruits of his attempt to do something in that style, and after just a couple of emails to dance music journalists and postings on message boards, he realised he was on to something. The buzz around his clever, attention-grabbing but witty sound built instantly, and before he knew it he was beset by reports of his tunes causing mayhem wherever they were played.

"Austin's Bodytronix (Eric Archer and Erich Ragsdale) have been hard at work for awhile without anyone outside of their fair city really knowing what these dudes were up to. Well, if their live mix "Night of the Arawans" is any indication, the duo might be at the forefront of a wildly maligned 31st century exploration of deep house and its acid tinged offshoots. It has a straightup hookers and X vibe, but somehow its not seedy. Rather it's twisted in a Lynchian way, with droning synths weaving about navigational beats, as propelling as their are hypnotizing." -Chocolate Bobka

Caveman
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Bat Bar (218 E 6th St)

Caveman was born in New York in January of 2010, when a group of friends decided it was time to put aside their boyhood ways and start being men. The sound they crafted in that large, dark room is equal parts chamber pop, dreamscape, and horror film score. At a Caveman show you will hear four-part harmonies, spaced-out guitars, synths, and, yes, much drumming. This has been a gallant year for the band, as since their first birthday they have shared the stage with bands such as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, White Rabbits, Here We Go Magic, Cursive, Amazing Baby, and Blue Oyster Cult. They recently went into the Loveboat studio with Nick Stumpf (French Kicks) to commit their songs to record.

The New York Times calls Dash Rip Rock "the kind of band that provides a lesson in American rock-and-roll history...skillful musicians with a penchant for getting reliably wild...." No Depression raves that DRR's recent albums prove that Dash is "one of the greatest bands working today" and Houston Press recently deemed Dash Rip Rock one of the "Top 10 Louisiana Bands of All Time." From Chase Hoffberger, The Austin Chronicle:

On last January's The One ... Cohesive, G-Side preached Southern-fried street gospel in a dreamy haze best typified by "How Far," a track on which rappers Clova and ST sampled Beach House and brought dream pop to hip-hop. Island, December's welcome follow-up, bangs harder from the tip with verbal assaults "Cinematic" and "Atmosphere," but there's still a sense that the Huntsville, Ala., duo has its heads in the clouds. Or maybe that's just the work of in-house production crew Block Beattaz, which cut beats that fan out like the exhaust on Andre 3000's Cadillac.

Jane Ellen Bryant
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Saxon Pub (1320 S Lamar Blvd)

It will not be long before audiences everywhere will be captivated by the distinctive, yet classic sound of Jane Ellen Bryant. Her music reflects the unique feel of her hometown, Austin, TX, but exhibits a delicate twist of its own. Growing up, Jane’s musical influences were varied. She was enthralled with ACDC’s Back in Black album, but also loved the haunting, lyrical style of Joan Baez. She describes her music as fitting somewhere in between. Jane studies vocal performance and music business at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, and spends her time traveling back and forth between these two music cities. Those who have heard her perform are amazed that such a powerful voice comes from such a small frame. Her songs have an innate ability to soothe, resonate, and speak truth to all ages. Her lyrics are a product of her passion, her understanding, her travels and the conflicts we all face in life and love. Jane’s songs sometimes ask questions that she and other people do not always want to ask themselves. Her songs will leave you thinking, happily humming along, and wishing for more. She just released her first single “Smoke on the Fire” on iTunes, and you can expect to hear her first full album soon.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Belmont (305 West 6th Street, Austin, TX, 78701)

Throughout history, individuals have been playing with the delicate balance between polarities. Often, the combination of two opposites makes for a harmony previously unknown, a sum greater than its parts. Motopony is the embodiment of this notion – a band built on a bedrock of contrasts and the gorgeous alchemy of seemingly conflicted sounds, and the feelings mapped over them. Guided by soulful machines Daniel Blue and Buddy Ross along with guitarist Brantley Cady and drummer Forrest Mauvais, there is a warm efficiency to the hard-soul/glitch-folk contained on the quartet's self-titled debut.

Royal Teeth
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ BD Riley's (204 E. 6th St.)

More often than not, Royal Teeth tries something, and despite the odds or apparent roadblocks, it simply works. Recruit a lead vocalist who has never been in a band before? Check. Record a cover of a popular, mega-selling single for the band’s first studio EP? Why not? High on the release of their new EP “Act Naturally”, the vocal duo of Gary Larsen and Nora Patterson provide heartfelt lyrics as the 6 piece band of musicians travel through lavish soundscapes via a synth-infused sound boasting a brand all to itself that’s not quite “dance pop” and not quite electronic. Leadoff track “Wild” finds Patterson’s crystalline vocal hooks bounding in joyous romps over Larsen’s grounded narrative. “I believe I can make you scream for me,” she sings, like a little girl flirting on the playground with her fingers firmly crossed behind her back. The band’s bold, warmed-up rendition of The Knife’s 2003 chilled-out club single “Heartbeats” sounds like a long-lost New Wave hit from the early 1980s, bubbling over with dance floor pulses and thick kick drum echoes. Royal Teeth effortlessly makes this familiar song its own without having to radically reinvent the style of the track or compromise the character of the band. In fact, Royal Teeth’s musicians are only interested in being themselves. And if making music and having audiences respond well is a difficult thing, it’s news to them. Larsen adds, “Everything about this band has been easy so far. Lots of people do the guy-girl vocals thing, but we felt that we could take our own swing at it.” Royal Teeth makes music for adventures.

Therefore it's been no surprise to see Deniro Farrar flooding the pages of the internet's most respected and loved sites, and having so many of the industry's key future artists and producers working with him. The most recent result of all this is his wonderful debut album 'DESTINY. Altered' which features not only Deniro's poetic life-tales, but equally epic and moving production throughout from the likes of SKYWLKR, Ryan Hemsworth, Keyboard Kid, and David Heartbreak to name but a few. So many gems within and the kind of album that allows you so fully into all aspects of his world – you are made a believer. Featuring many SH favourites like Shady Blaze, SL Jones and the always magic 2 Lettaz on the help-out, this is one of those albums to live with for real. POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs' members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011. By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed to the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop.

Old friend, ‘tis been nigh on to ten or eleven years since Austin¹s Li¹l Cap¹n Travis shoved its splintered craft off on a treacherous audio odyssey of country-style portions. 2012 finds LCT once again hunkered down in the ice caves on the outskirts of town conjuring the follow up to 2007¹s mystical, masterful “Twilight on Sometimes Island”, the Li¹l Cap¹n's sound encompassing otherworldly honky-tonk, tear-filled handclaps, strange fuzz-blasted tales and basement epics. The diabolical roqueros of LCT continue to conduct live concert raids into woolly outposts in the heart of Comancheria: Marfa, TX, Norman, OK and Big D to name a few, not to mention mythical down-home throedowns on the weathered stages of Austin. Recent times have also found members of LCT lending cold, efficient expertise to the likes of Bill Callahan, Bruce Robison, the Lonesome Heroes, the North American motion picture industry, high-stakes table tennis and the Stone River Boys, only to reconvene invigorated, rowdy and bolstered, yet not unwary of the dangers that lay just beyond the palisaded plains.

Not In The Face!!
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Main (603 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)

From Kevin Curtain, The Austin Chronicle:

"Last time we got pulled over on tour, the cop asked what kind of band we were," says Not in the Face's singer/guitarist Jonathan Terrell from behind the wheel of the duo's diesel van. "We said, 'We're a country band' and he let us go."

From the locals' tour playlists – Gary Stewart, Alabama, and when in east Texas, 104.1FM the Ranch – you'd believe they are. In the backseat, the tattoo of Wes Cargal's drumsticks on a practice pad underscores John Anderson's 1991 hit "Straight Tequila Night." He's disciplined and meticulous, the kind of guy who practices on the way to the show and compares his drum style to "putting on a 15-year-old pair of Levi's." Big white vans are familiar territory for Cargal, who grew up touring the motocross circuit and previously hit the road with rockers White Rhino.

Tonight, they're at Fast Freddy's, a dump of a pool hall in Longview, right around where Terrell and Cargal grew up. The hometown crowd watches the pair detonate a possessed version of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" and goes crazy for explosive original fare like "Downtown Girl," which showcases Terrell's soulful and textured singing. The unhinged abandon emanating from the twosome is purely emotional. Terrell's six-string work, while frenetic, is no thrash job but rather a thing of precision and carefully cultivated taste. Cargal looks like Mitch Mitchell: a whirlwind of fills and build-ups, bringing the jam to complex heights and dropping it into a swinging, swaggering pocket of rock & roll thunder.

Heading home afterward, the familiar sounds of Tom Petty's Greatest Hits fill the van, and Terrell's classic rock sensibilities reveal themselves.

"I think people are moving away from playing an instrument," he says. "They just go home and write a bunch of shitty beats on the computer. I think it's rude to every band that's out there playing the bass and playing the drums."

Cargal concurs: "It's sterile. There's no soul in it anymore. That's a big thing to us. We play hard, with soul, and push the boundaries of what we can do as a twopiece."

Saint Motel
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

With sophisticated savvy and singularity, the Los Angeles quartet Saint Motel has built a formidable reputation on the back of inventive indie pop and wildly fun live shows. Mixing blistering pep with unique flair and rousing rhythms, Saint Motel's aural catharsis is pure bliss with a twist of cynical humor. Once pulled in by the pulsating and joyous melodies, delight can be found in the surprisingly avant-garde lyrical subject matter. Stories reveal themselves through thematic twists and turns with a narrative voice both subversive and sincere. We find our contemporary hero assessing the world through a lens of poetic contrasts -- running down the line of his modern concerns and realizing that a mangled face can be beautiful, that honest feedback can be as lethal as any weapon, and that one might be better off when he has nothing at all. With such honest motifs strung together by tongue-in-cheek notions, delivered with such charm, the band's intentions are often left open to interpretation. And so, what might be easily perceived as sexy with one listen, with another might seem mean-spirited or flatly perverse. That is the flair of Saint Motel's rapturous pop and the graceful dichotomy of its existence.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Elysium (705 Red River St 78701)

Strong Arm Steady was formed in the shadows of the West Coast’s Death Row Records movement, which at one time, loomed large over much of the region’s talent. Many Los Angeles artists—themselves students and children of Death Row—were becoming frustrated at the gang mentality that colored perceptions of their burgeoning underground. Out of that frustration came resourcefulness and unity, and as unity grew into community, L.A.’s indie scene began to blossom, not in opposition to Death Row, but as an alternative. They are the new generation. They are Strong Arm Steady.

The Soldier Thread
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Buffalo Billiards (201 E 6th St)

The Soldier Thread is an indie pop-rock quintet hailing from Austin, Texas. Having been only patched together since late 2007, the ensemble has already undergone quite an alteration in style. Todd Abels (guitar, keyboard) and Justin McHugh (keyboard, guitar, backup vocals) set out from ambient origins to weave in the missing pieces. Close ties to Patricia Lynn (lead vocals, keyboard) and Drew Vandiver (drums) allowed for an easy joining of loose ends. With Chance Gilmore (bass guitar) eventually completing the chain, the group began to play shows in and around Austin, as well as throughout Texas. The release of In Spades in 2010 marked a shift from true indie sound to more polished, pop-driven tunes. The band went on their first national tour in May 2011, opening for Blue October, and landed the 101X Staff Pick with self-released single "Anybody." The integration of producer Dwight Baker served as the anchor stitch to complete the composite the group currently finds themselves in. Rumors of this particular trend unwinding further are validated by TST's present live set. Additionally, the band just recently recorded a new EP, expected to be released in early 2012.

Wussy
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Soho Lounge (217 E 6th St)

From Jim Caligiuri, The Austin Chronicle:

Besides fruit, a strawberry can be a red bruise on the skin. It's an apt description for what Wussy does. The Cincinnati quartet's brand of punk is raucous, melodic, and leaves a mark. Strawberry's more electronic than previous output – check out the fuzz on "Asteroid" – but there's a taut stateliness to what Wussy does, recalling the Mekons. Chuck Cleaver of Nineties wiseacres the Ass Ponys matches his Jon Langford to Lisa Walker's Sally Timms blow for blow. Wussy's magic is the rage behind "Fly Fly Fly" and ominous undercurrents of "Little Miami," pulsing at different tempos but striking with equal force.

I Want My Name Back
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 1:00pm - 3:00pm @ Carver Museum Boyd Vance Theater (1165 Angelina St)
Whatever happened to the Sugarhill Gang? I WANT MY NAME BACK highlights the rise and fall of former original members of the Sugarhill Gang, Master Gee and Wonder Mike . As original writers and rappers, Master Gee and Wonder Mike were the creative leaders of the Sugarhill Gang who recorded the biggest selling Hip Hop single of all time called RAPPER’S DELIGHT. The album with that distinctive cover went platinum. The Sugarhill Gang are widely credited with introducing the world to Hip Hop music in 1979. We go back in time with Master Gee and Wonder Mike as they recreate the beginning of commercial Hip Hop. We follow their story as they tour the world for five years and follow up with songs like APACHE, 8TH WONDER and LIVING IN THE FAST LANE amongst others. And then one day in 1984 it’s gone. The money. The fame. But more interesting in this case their names. They lost their identity and their legacy as ruthless forces in the record industry tried to exploit and then destroy them. Thirty years after their historic recording, Master Gee and Wonder Mike come back to reclaim their names and their rightful legacy.

The John Steel Singers
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 2:30pm - 2:39pm @ Ballroom G Day Stage Austin Convention Center (500 E Cesar Chavez St.)

The John Steel Singers are one of the most well-known alternative acts in Australia. With five members traversing across instruments like explorers, the Brisbane natives bring another dimension to the experimental pop aesthetic with an accomplished brass section on trombone and trumpet amongst the staple guitars, bass and drums. They were voted by national youth station, triple j, as unsigned band of the year with the Unearthed J Award in 2008. Their debut album ‘Tangalooma’ was produced by Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Fiery Furnaces). The album garnered huge support with triple j, receiving feature album, and single ‘Overpass’ coming in at #52 in the Hottest 100 of 2010. The band has trekked the country with their own sell-out headline shows and supported some incredible bands on tour such as The Polyphonic Spree, The Morning Benders and The Dodos; as well as playing festivals such as Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out and Laneway Festival. They were recently in the states for CMJ in NY and have returned again for SXSW. They’ll be touring the west coast with He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister and Bad Weather California; playing the Tree Fort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho; and they’ll jumping into the studio with LA producer Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Little Joy, Au Revoir Simone) while in the country.

fun.
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 2:50pm - 3:20pm @ La Zona Rosa (612 W 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Close your eyes. Okay, no wait — open them because you need to keep reading — but close them in spirit. Now pretend fun. is not a band, but an amusement park. Just replace the guitar with a log flume and the percussion with a carousel. Now imagine the crowds lining up for a ride on fun.’s sophomore record, Some Nights. The line snakes around the whole park. Maybe there are some bearded ladies on it. Maybe lots of bearded ladies. Anyway. As you get closer, you see the entrance to Some Nights is actually Nate Ruess’ head. His mouth is open wider than should be physically possible and his uvula dangles in the dark. The musical tracks harden into wooden rollercoaster tracks. You get on the car, and with a jerk, it starts to move. There’s that familiar feeling that tells you something pretty transformative is about to happen. Lights flash as you go plummeting into the darkness. The rollercoaster version of Some Nights follows the same path as the album version: colorful on the outside, deeper than you had imagined in the center, and so good it’ll make your head spin.
    Want to go again?
“I had met Jack briefly once and thought he was kind of a douche,” says Nate Ruess of his first encounter with Jack Antonoff. They were 18 years old and going, separately, to punk rock shows in southern New Jersey. Nate had worked at one of the clubs since he was 16 (“It’s how I developed a sense of what really works, and what is boring.”), and Jack was in love with the whole scene--well, almost the whole scene.
“In the late 90s there was just a brilliant punk world happening in legion halls and fire houses. I was immediately taken with Nate’s voice but everything else – no.” Years later, Nate, who was the lead singer of The Format at the time and Jack, Steel Train’s front man, wound up on tour together. Impressions hadn’t changed much. “It was just like an, ‘Oh God, this guy,’ vibe from both of us right off the bat. But 24 hours into that tour, Nate and I became inseparable.”
When The Format broke up, Nate’s first call was to Jack.
Though not a “meet-cute” tale, it’s indicative of who fun. is as a band. You hear them and think, “Are they really going to pull off this sound, this arrangement, and create a moving, catchy, memorable rock song?” It’s become their signature. So long as that signature has one last element: Nate’s second call was to Andrew Dost, the force behind all the literal bells and whistles of fun. “Andrew,” says Jack, “is one of those people who see the world like a giant art project. I can’t begin to tell you how vital he is in our band.”
“My first impressions of them were both overwhelmingly positive,” says Andrew Dost, “I’ve heard they were….unsure of each other when they first met?”
fun. has not stopped living up to its name since their 2009 debut, Aim & Ignite. A year after the debut they were opening for Paramore on their headlining tour and performing at Coachella along with The Strokes and Jay-Z. Now they’ve teamed up with Janelle Monáe, a melodic collaboration on display in one of three videos for “We Are Young.” In addition, the TV series “Glee” just plucked “We Are Young” off Some Nights to cover on the show, an experience that meant the world to a band that prides itself on appealing to any demographic that might feel disenfranchised or just plain odd. “None have us have ever felt like anything but outcasts our entire lives,” says Jack, “and I know that’s something that has resonated with fun. fans. They are the same people as us — kids who never fully latched onto a specific music scene because it couldn't define them.”
With a trail of accolades behind them, fun. knew they had to step up their game in an unexpected way when it came to producing their second record. “I got really got into hip-hop,” says Nate, “I mean really into it. Songs started coming to me in the middle of the night, and I would hear them with breakbeats and samples, and it all made sense… I told everyone I wanted the next record to sound like a hip-hop album, and I don’t think they were unsupportive, but they were definitely confused.” Then, a few hours before a show in Phoenix, the band snuck into a music room at Arizona State University. Nate doesn’t play any instruments, but by now Jack and Andrew have learned to “crack the code.” This time the code was for the track that would become “Some Nights.” Andrew pounded out the chords out on a piano, while Nate sang, and Jack stomped his feet and clapped as hard as he could to establish the pulse of the song. “That moment really brought us together as the band that was going to be making this album….I just had to explain how the MPC (Music Production Center) would be our new best friend.”
Jack is a whip-smart horn-rimmed glasses-wearing guitarist whose influences are Tom Waits, Jack White, and Neil Young.
Andrew counts the flugelhorn and glockenspiel among his conquered instruments. (Influences: Weezer, ELO, and Claude Debussy.)
And here they were, jumping out of their skin, listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Drake in a concrete building in the middle of the desert.
“What can I say? Eventually they fell victim to Drizzy,” laughs Nate.
When pressed by their label and management for a list of potential producers, Nate consulted the albums he loved most. The name that appeared time and time again was "Jeff Bhasker.”
The legendary Grammy-winning producer for Alicia Keys and Kanye West had his hands full at the time, working with Beyoncé, and the band worried that they might not have a chance to meet him. Finally, one night late at The Bowery Hotel, Nate got his chance. Their relationship was one that fit nicely into the grand tradition of fun. “Jeff wasn’t very, shall we say, warm. He had been working on Beyoncé all day, and he really gave the vibe that he didn’t want to be meeting with me...but thank God for alcohol. We ended up hitting it off, and since I was drunk and lacking self-awareness, I decided to sing him something I had been working on. I remember singing the chorus for "We Are Young" kind of loud and out of key. That’s when I learned that Jeff does this thing when he’s excited where his eyes perk up and somehow his ears move all the way to the top of his head. He told me we had to work together.”
fun. was on their way to becoming the band that would — that could — produce Some Nights.
“Jeff left a huge imprint in our brains,” says Andrew, “and for me at least, made me realize all over again that songs are special, and that they deserve to sound unique. His palette of sounds is huge.” Or, as Jack says: “Jeff pushed the shit out of us, and he’s nothing like us. He helped us do something way bigger than what we could have done on our own."
Jeff heard the songs stripped down with just vocals, acoustic guitar and piano before the band went into the studio with him.
“Jeff has an energy, a talent, confidence, and a way of making you feel confident, like no one I've ever met, or probably will ever meet,” says Nate. “Suddenly here was a gigantic beat on top of those acoustics and pianos. Jack’s guitar solo in ‘Carry On’ was one of those magical moments. I’ve never seen anyone so in control of their tone, and for him to take the lyrics, internalize them, and redistribute it into the form of a guitar solo, is just so unbelievable, and it’s a huge testament to his passion for music.”
Lyrically, Some Nights has a uniquely impactful note — and it’s not always an upbeat one. See also: the line “I got nothing left inside my chest but it’s all alright” in “All Alright.” “I was just coming off of a darker and more introspective year,” Nate remembers, “You know, I remember being a freshman in high school and feeling like an outsider who always wanted this one girl to notice me, and I would listen to ‘El Scorcho’ by Weezer and couldn’t help but smile because there was at least one other person in the world who felt how I felt. That’s what I hope to accomplish as a lyricist. But I was having anxi

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 5:00pm - 5:40pm @ Fader Fort (1101 E 5th St, Austin, TX 78702)

David Liebe Hart Band
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:00pm - 7:40pm @ Headhunters (720 Red River Austin, TX)

Julien Pras, well known for the pop magnificence of his studio session with Calc, was secretly dreaming of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and was also sharing these musical fantasies with drummer Benoit Busser and noisy bass player Jimmy Kinast.
The three of them make a melodic stoner music using heavy reverbs. Julien Pras’s airy voice mixed with the sound of fuzzy electric guitar gives an aerial dimension to their rolling rhythm.

Quiet Company
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:10pm - 7:25pm @ Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St)

This event was recommended by The Austin Chronicle in the article "State of Love and Trust: Belief in the 2011-12 Austin Music Awards," by Raoul Hernandez. You can read the full feature here.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:15pm - 7:40pm @ Spill (212 E. 6th St.)

Canailles started off in Parc Lafontaine during summer 2009. At first six musicians from really different backgrounds would meet up there to improvise their own versions of bluegrass, country and blues standards. Their love story took a whole new level after a couple of months, and they started writing their own songs in French Quebecois joual, crafting a sound that would be all their own, a crazy mix of cajun, zydeco, country, blues, bluegrass, ragtime and rock garage. After raking #3 at the 2011 Francouvertes finals, Canailles is now a group of 7 self-taught hyperactive musicians, who graduated from whisky nights and who performed everywhere in Quebec during summer 2011, namely at Montreal’s FrancoFolies, in Saguenay and Gaspésie.

CFCF, aka Michael Silver, has managed to build a world all his own since his debut LP ‘Continent’, an impressive collage of vintage electronic textures evoking grandiose landscapes worthy of a Michael Mann film. ‘The River’, an EP based partly on Werner Herzog’s classic film Fitzcarraldo, deepened a growing obsession with conjuring far-away landscapes and voyages through a style which is at times melancholy, propulsive and ecstatic. Working in genres ranging from house and disco to ambient and new age to rap and R&B, and pulling influences from Peter Gabriel and Popol Vuh to Mr. Fingers and DJ Screw, CFCF’s music is at once versatile and far-reaching yet eminently listenable and recognizably pop, and always vivid.

ZOROASTER’s heady mix of mammoth metal and psychotropic shoegaze has seen the trio hailed as "one of the U.S.'s most promising metal bands" and it has receiving shining praise for its explosive power, intriguing mysticism and unique take on heavy music. Summoned by the mighty sludge of The Melvins, the mysticism of Celtic Frost and the nihilistic blues of Black Sabbath, ZOROASTER formed in 2003 out of “the need for sedation by high volumes and low frequencies". The band immediately began creating devastating, dirge-ridden doom that erupted into heavyweight grooves and transcendental musical atmospheres. ZOROASTER's early sound was compared to "having 10,000 ton granite slabs dropped on your head from a height of several miles".

In the late summer 1979, Joe "King" Carrasco formed a stripped-down four-piece combo to replace his Chicano big band, El Molino. Dubbed the Crowns, organist/accordionist Kris Cummings, bassist Brad Kizer, and drummer Miguel Navarro backed up Carrasco at Raul's, the famed punk club, and the Hole-in-the-Wall, and other University of Texas-area venues in Austin, quickly gaining a following around their revved-up Tex-Mex brand of punk rock, harkening back to the classic Vox and Farfisa organ-driven sound first popularized by the 1960s Texas bands Sir Douglas Quintet ("She's About A Mover"), Sam The Sham and The Pharoahs ("Wooly Bully"), and ? And the Mysterians ("96 Tears").

The Front Bottoms
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:45pm - 8:25pm @ Lamberts (401 W 2nd St)

What can we say about The Front Bottoms? We know we love them: a punk band that uses acoustic guitar, indie-rock dance grooves, Springsteen-y keyboard lines (this they might deny). It’s hook-filled… it’s anthemic… it’s confessional. Maybe Joni Mitchell by way of Green Day? They must have heard some Replacements along the way, and it seems like what Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers did for the Boston suburbs these guys are doing for Bergen County, NJ. But they still leave us scratching our heads. Just what the hell have the Front Bottoms alchemized?

Workout
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 7:45pm - 8:25pm @ The Stage on Sixth (508 E 6th Street, Austin, Texas 78701)

In June 2011, The New Yorker called the band WORKOUT “a hyperactive rock monster” and compared their music to a love child of David Bowie and Roky Erickson. But all name checking and flattery aside, this isn’t quite the full picture. This is a Brooklyn band in the grandest tradition of Rock and Roll that wants to be your # 1 Party Band, break some hearts and unleash wild times. Featuring Jack Killen on vocals and piano, Alexander W. Forbes on guitar, Jason Langdon on bass and Tim Traynor on drums, this four-piece fills rooms with their anthemic odes on love, death and fantasy. These are big songs with finger-tapped guitar solos, sing-along choruses, foot-stomping chants and enough wild noise to make any bar break out into a brawl. Their self-titled debut album, featuring “Bottom Barrel Boys”, was released on September 24th 2011, twenty years after Nevermind and can be purchased only at your local N.Y.C. bodega or on-line at the band’s website. With hardly any of the songs being under the 5 minute mark, you can tell these guys really want you to get your money’s worth - strap yourself in for the ride and help put the classic back in Rock.

Beginning in 2005 as a duo, Plain Ole Bill and Jimmy2Times set up shop around Minneapolis playing 4 turntable sets. After initially having a club night called “Party & Bull$hit” at Foundation, the two sought a new home. First Avenue's Record Room was the spot and the group has been there the 1st Friday of every month ever since. While initially bringing in guest DJs each month, Last Word and Fundo quickly became permanent members of the group. On February 24th 2012, the group celebrated their 4 year anniversary to a sold-out crowd in First Avenue's Mainroom.

Holy Grail
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:30pm @ Barbarella Patio (611 Red River St)
When it comes to ripping young metal bands, few—perhaps none—rip harder than HOLY GRAIL. Formed in Southern California in 2008 when vocalist James Paul Luna and drummer Tyler Meahl escaped from Pasadena metal squadron White Wizzard and teamed up with San Diegan guitar hero Eli Santana, the band was called Sorcerer until it became clear that the moniker didn’t quite capture the rarefied nature of the members’ collective talents. So Sorcerer became HOLY GRAIL. And HOLY GRAIL became so unstoppable that California just couldn’t contain them. And now, like their spiritual forefathers in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio, HOLY GRAIL are poised to bring their hook-laden shred anthems to an arena near you.

Wheelchair Sports Camp
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:30pm @ Club 606 (606 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Wheelchair Sports Camp, the Denver based pseudo hip-hop band is a combination of beats, drums, a saxophone, and DJ. The band unknowingly started in the summer of 1997 when Kalyn moved back from Burbank, CA to her Denver hometown and was invited to attend and corrupt the 14th annual week-long Wheelchair Sports Camp. After meeting Abi and later brother Isaac in college, Kalyn combined talents to create a more live, jazzy, funky, combination to the traditional hip-hop group. The unconventional setup of live instruments, turntables and Kalyn's produced beats, presents a polished sound unique to the hip hop game with old-school lyrics that maintain a sarcastic yet independent and heavy consciousness.
Wheelchair Sports Camp persists to stay passionate about many causes, playing shows to raise money and awareness to Occupy Denver, prevent domestic violence, support Haiti relief efforts, promote equality, advocate an end to the war in the Middle East, aid the homeless, and any other fight they can foster. Taking a nod from one of their favorite artists Radiohead, Wheelchair Sports Camp always has free or pay what you can CDs available at shows for fans. “If you can’t afford music or food, steal it!” has been their motto since inception. Their goal is to spread their music like wildfire, and they encourage their fans to share and borrow creativity in hopes to conserve a free culture. To them, it's the only way to keep their music headed in the right direction without allowing money and greed to interfere with the creative process.

Carletta Sue Kay
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:35pm @ Beauty Bar (617 E. Seventh St. Austin, TX)
Carletta Sue Kay are equal parts Marianne Faithful, Joanna Newsom and Emmylou Harris, coupled with the song writing styles of Stephin Merritt and Cole Porter. The music gravitates toward the sadder side of life, lamenting much, regretting more. CSK is named after singer-songwriter Randy Walker’s real-life cousin who served a prison sentence for domestic terrorism and threatening to blow-up her ex-boyfriend with a pipe bomb. This is an auspicious inspiration for a musical persona who, performing with an obvious five-o’clock shadow, sings heart-wrenching yet transformative songs of love, life, and relationships told from the perspective of a woman. Carletta’s live performances have so riveted audiences that she has already secured an international following—before releasing even a single record. The debut Carletta Sue Kay lp Incongruent will be out this year on Kitten Charmer. Singer Randy Walker, aka Carletta was recently honored to record with the Magnetic Fields for their forthcoming and 10th album Love at the Bottom of the Sea on Merge.

French-Mexican Andrea Balency was born in Paris in 1989 and after a thorough and classical education; she started composing music at the age of 17. Since then, her life experiences from both Argentina and Mexico - where she’s been living since her teens – have influenced her songwriting to the point of not only including traditional French music and ‘chanson’ but also Mexican and Argentina’s folklore. Throughout her short career she also included a wide array of other music styles to her own chemistry, ranging from jazz and sometimes hip-hop to a touch of electronic music which is, slowly, becoming her new favorite experimental ground.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Hotel Vegas (1500 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78702)

Confidence isn’t always born of experience, as seen by the forceful debut by Los Angeles band Cold Showers. Combining influences of late 1970s post-punk with a sonic exploration closer to something from Neu!, it is the carefully constructed spatiality of the music that gives the somewhat minimal lyrics their weight; distant and atmospheric, it lends the hazy vocals a detached, ghostly cast. Moments of aggression and transcendence transform the songs from mere sound to rich sonic narratives: within the rise of the language lies a vision under restraint, a pent up joy that is like nothing else. The resulting sound is unexpectedly tough, vital, and contemporary.

FIDLAR
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ The Main (603 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)

It's easy to get frustrated with 'labels' so excuse me as I throw some around trying to describe my new favorite band. What about just calling it fucking Rock ‘n’ Roll? Punk? Drunk? I mean, it's not about drinking - though drinking really helps. Sometimes you need to be lubricated to get the fuel that drives the bratty, playfully druggy, unseeingly tight-but-sloppy punk anthems that define FIDLAR. It's easier to perpetuate adolescence in a rehearsal space with cases of beer and your best friends than at some day job. The cliches of guitars, sweat and beers - that bring to mind dudes who’ve watched Airheads a few too many times - have modern parallels in bands, garages, D.I.Y. labels, basements and studios too numerous to mention or give a shit about. However, FIDLAR is a breath of fresh air amid this age of censored hiss and pop,. It's like your favorite band when you were 15 but only louder, more drunk and ready to ollie your head just to bail the board on your teeth because, as the acronym states - Fuck It Dog Life's A Risk. - Alex Kaiser

Goldrush
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Clive Bar (609 Davis St)

Prabir, Treesa, Matt, and Gregg are Richmond, VA's Goldrush. This band is a fun balance of orchestral based classical music being injected into some high octane pop and rock and roll. The influences of this band range from The Beatles to Ray Charles to the old Ludwig Van. Treesa and Matt Gold are both classically trained musicians that have played with various symphonies around the United States. Similarly, Gregg Brooks and Prabir Mehta have been hitting the rock and indie rock circuit for quite a while also. The songs are constructed as three minute pop tunes and then filled with the frantic absurdity that only three centuries of violin and contra bass can bring. While being given the 'classical music' treatment, the songs are nothing that would go hand in hand with the usual attitudes associated with the world of symphonies and orchestras. No ties, no silence, or sobriety. Topics range from absurd wealth to sex to use of the most venerable vices. Mainly, they're fun songs with a sense of humor...we think. Lol?

Joy Kills Sorrow
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ tenOak (409 Colorado St)

Some people prefer pop music that behaves like math: once a few familiar variables have been determined—female vocals or male? Acoustic guitar or electric? — the end result should be easy to predict, and always sound the same. That’s not the Joy Kills Sorrow method. This Boston-based string band favors a more unpredictable approach relying on musical chemistry and improvisation. Hence the title of their sophomore album, This Unknown Science. All of the members have been touted as virtuosos, and they effortlessly hunt for unexpected outcomes and new discoveries. “We like experimenting and stretching boundaries,” explains guitarist Matthew Arcara, an acoustic player gaining a name for himself as both an up-and-coming guitar slinger and luthier. Arcara has taken home several honors at various guitar competitions including Winfield’s National Flatpicking Championship in 2006.

Rebecca Loebe
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Beale Street Tavern (214-B East 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Since quitting her job as a full-time audio engineer, self-described "post-brontosaurus indie folk/crunk" sinner/songwriter Rebecca Loebe has played an average of 150 shows per year in almost 40 states of the US and in Europe. An invitation to audition for NBC's new hit singing competition "The Voice," in 2011 led to her performance of an original arrangement of Nirvana's 'Come As You Are' on the premiere episode of the program. Her performance caught the attention of celebrity coaches Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, and her version of the song landed in the iTunes Top 100 in the US, Europe and South America, peaking at #7 on the iTunes Alternative Chart in the US. Although appearing on a television show seen by 12 million people in the first of its many international airings gave her career an undeniable boost, Loebe had already been supporting herself as a fulltime touring indie/roots singer/songwriter for 4 years.  In the May of 2009 she was honored as a winner of the Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Award, and the next year her full-length album ‘Mystery Prize’ spent over 2 months on both the US and European Americana Charts and was named by the AMA as one of the Top 100 Albums of the Year.

Roll The Tanks
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Sony Club @ Red 7 Patio (611 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Roll the Tanks may be the most ambitious band in LA. In a scene with bands on every corner, the Tanks guys set out to get the world to notice their Replacements-y, Kinks influenced rock and roll sound by building a studio in a garage by hand, where they aimed their sights on making a big unapologetic
rock record. They recruited the sometimes-touring drummer of
Frank Black and the Catholics and all-the-time drummer of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Joe Sirois, to round out their sound and then, with the help of a big-time metal producer who secretly had been following the band for over a year, they cranked out twelve tracks of guitar heavy, bombastic rock and roll that somehow recalls the very best of Hold Me Up era Goo Goo Dolls with enough modern energy to keep it fresh and new
    sounding.
While on tour with Against Me!, Roll The Tanks were lucky enough to catch the attention of Jordan Kleeman, tour manager for Against Me! and founder of Sabot Productions, which is home to recordings by such great bands as Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, Lucero and The Hold Steady. Impressed with RTT’s sound and drive, Jordan agreed to put out their upcoming seven inch, Goodnight Jimmy Lee, which is due out in the fall of
2011. Not bad for a couple of guys who’ve been known to sit at the bar untilafter midnight until their checks cleared so they could afford to pay their bar tabs, hence the title of their upcoming full length, Broke Til Midnight.

Sons Of Fathers
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Saxon Pub (1320 S Lamar Blvd)

From Melanie Haupt, The Austin Chronicle:

While David Beck and Paul Cauthen had run in the same musical circles down the road in San Marcos and here in Austin, it wasn't until a weeklong sojourn in Brooklyn in December 2010 that they decided to join forces. They haven't looked back.

"I've tried co-writing with a lot of people, and it just doesn't flow," says Cauthen, all swagger and cigarette-roughened rasp. "All of a sudden, I'm writing better than I ever have with David. It's taken me to another level of writing."

In September, the duo released its eponymous debut, originally titled Beck & Cauthen until the pair got a cease-and-desist order from Beck Hansen. The title and group name changed, but not the disc's pure Americana, bearing pitch-perfect harmonies that have become the duos trademark. Steeped in honky-tonk and co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Lloyd Maines, who also contributed his pedal steel, Sons of Fathers documents two young men who treat their music career as a professional endeavor rather than a lark subsidized by waiting tables. This means waking up early, making calls, sending emails, writing, and rehearsing.

"And then we do it all over again," says Cauthen.

"You cannot stop. You can't expect someone to hand it to you," says the earnest, 23-year-old Beck, son of Bill Whitbeck, bassist for Robert Earl Keen. "It's not like the old days where some record label guy is going to come to your show and give you the world."

As such, Beck and Cauthen are preparing to record a second album with the rest of their band, comprising Regan Schmidt (guitar, lap steel), Dan Cohen (guitar, mandolin), and Dees Stribling on drums. Their manager, Marty Schwartz, who worked with the Eagles in the Hotel California era, came out of semiretirement to sign on with the band. Plus, Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell (Tammy Wynette, the Raconteurs) will lend his ears to the next album.

Not too shabby for a coupla broke kids.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Headhunters Patio (720 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)
In lieu of cold statistics, nationwide bamboozlement and the usual mind numbing malaise, Sean Yseult (White Zombie), vocalist Von Hesseling, guitarist Donna She Wolf (Cycle Sluts From Hell), guitarist Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal) and drummer Gene Trautmann (Queens of the Stone Age) offer up Star & Dagger: A subwoofer's cauldron forged by functional alcoholism, pharmaceutical voyage and junk drawer hallucinogens, steeped under a heavy contraband haze that hangs low enough to embrace the Almighty Downtrodden so they can revel in it.
The band formed in 2011 during an inspired flurry of recordings in Joshua Tree, resulting in their upcoming release “Tomorrowland Blues.” In the meantime they hightailed it to New Orleans, recording with Sean’s former bandmate J. Yuenger (White Zombie) in his private studio surrounded by swampy cemeteries. This resulted in a 3-song vinyl e.p. recently released by Last Hurrah Records titled “In My Blood”. Between all of this and much decadent hobnobbing, the band has managed to fit in live shows opening for the likes of Helmet, Eagles of Death Metal, and Masters of Reality, playing in LA, New Orleans and Joshua Tree. The music is heavy blues metal topped with the lovely vocal stylings of Von Hesseling, the lovechild of Cherie Currie and Anita Pallenberg.

The Young Evils are Troy Nelson (guitar/vocals) and Mackenzie Mercer (vocals) with: Cody Hurd (guitar), Michael Lee (bass) and Faustine Hudson (drums). The Seattle-based band self released their debut album, “Enchanted Chapel”, produced by Barrett Jones (Nirvana, The Melvins) in August 2010. They are set to record their next studio album in Brooklyn with producer Shane Stoneback (The Cults, Vampire Weekend, Magic Kids, Sleigh Bells). In the past year The Young Evils have played SXSW Seattle Showcase, Sasquatch! Music Festival and headlined the Neumos stage at Capitol Hill Block Party on July 23rd. They kick off their first US tour by joining the line up of Pearl Jam’s PJ20 Destination Weekend in East Troy, WI. They’ve opened for The Vaseline’s, Dum Dum Girls, and The Cave Singers. Their song “A Just Built Beaming Light” was selected by KEXP 90.3 as Song of the Day on Aug. 20, 2010, and NPR selected “Get Over It” as Song of the Day Oct. 25, 2010. Local music blog Three Imaginary Girls named their record Best Local Debut of 2010, and “Enchanted Chapel” was one of Seattle’s best selling local albums of 2010.

Thus:Owls
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Spill (212 E. 6th St.)
With a voice that straddles seamlessly the worlds of close fragility and far reaching intensity, there is nary a person on the planet that doesn’t fall immediately entranced when they hear it. The Canadian/Swedish band Thus:Owls have carved themselves into the psyches and hearts of many curious crowds along their way since their 2009 debut record “Cardiac Malformations”. The group’s cinematic, dark and emotional pop hits you in the gut and brings your focus to what lays deep inside. Their follow-up album "Harbours" was recorded in the French countryside, in a castle on the banks of La Seine. When it was released in Sweden last October, the press used words such as "ingenious" and "masterpiece" to describe it. Thus:Owls may be a pearl yet to be discovered for many listeners around the world, but with the new album "Harbours", they have established themselves as one of the most willful and original bands emerging from Canada and Sweden right now.

Wallpaper
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ ACL Live at the Moody Theater (310 W Willie Nelson Blvd 78701)
Wallpaper. is, in many ways, Ricky Reed. The indulgent and ever-stylish frontman is more than just a sweet pair of shades and a gold-plated microphone. He’s a bona fide viral hustler, a disco ball-busting showman and an extremely gifted producer expertly blurring glitzy pop and raunchy rap with anthemic rock and electronic funk. But Wallpaper. is other things too—a raging four-piece, for one, but most importantly, Wallpaper. is you. You and me and everyone we know on our best night ever, positively #STUPiDFACEDD, champagnin’ with no plans in the morning.

When first we met Ricky Reed, he was busy crushing Oakland house parties and selling CD-Rs out the trunk of his car. He’d called upon his earliest influences—P-Funk, Afrobeat, Bay Area rap, Prince—and come away with sweaty, swaggerful beats imbued with a real musicality. Meanwhile, his Lynchian video blogs (a little David and a lot of Liam) and inventive remixes and mashups earned him out-of-town props, particularly when his sax-blaring remake of Das Racist’s “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell” went totally freaking atomic.

Wallpaper.’s debut LP, Doodoo Face, was a masterful collision of buoyant percussion, synth blurt, heavy bass and wild narcissism as strong for its legit songwriting chops as for its illicit party-wrangling. Naturally, the live show evolved in step with the music, into a truly visceral thing with double drummers pounding out a thunderous beat behind Ricky Reed and his partner, the charismatic and supremely sassy Novena Carmel. Witnessed in person, whether in a theater or a college quad, their sound is busting at its well-tailored seams, outsized and overpowering.

Ricky Reed initially self-released Wallpaper.’s breakout single, “#STUPiDFACEDD,” dubbed an “awesomely doltish ode to Saturday-night oblivion” by Entertainment Weekly. The subsequent video was hand-picked for MTV’s Indie Music Month coverage and has since racked up over a million views. The song infiltrated several episodes of Jersey Shore too, and inspired MTV and Extreme’s HYPE Music to team up with Evan Bogart’s freshly launched Boardwalk Records for an innovative release partnership. Enter the #STUPiDFACEDD EP, a genre-bending, thump-addled set featuring a guest turn from Bay Area rap legend Too $hort, serving to sate appetites until Wallpaper.'s Boardwalk LP arrives.

Now, as radio stations fight over which format has dibs on him—Top 40, Alternative, Rhythmic—Ricky Reed continues to do what he does best: put in work, create, tour, entertain. He’s currently co-writing music for Andrew W.K.’s next album, recently completed a song with funk godfather George Clinton, and covered Adele with a little help from raunchy rising Detroit emcee Danny Brown. He’s an in-demand remixer, working with artists as diverse as Britney Spears and Local Natives, and a beast on the road with a band that blares arena-sized energy. Ladies and gentlemen, look outside—if it’s the weekend, check the mirror—Wallpaper. has arrived.

Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Easy Tiger Patio (709 E 6th St)
Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers are a folk-rock-soul sextet of pan-Scottish provenance. Singer and guitarist Ali Downer assumed the moniker 'Woodenbox' , in a nod to influences such as King Creosote and ‘Bonnie’ Prince Billy and the addition of The Fistful of Fivers reflects a collective appreciation of Ennio Morricone’s scores for the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone.
The band's debut album, released on Electric Honey (Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro) in April 2010 is entitled 'Home and the Wildhunt', a reference to the Celtic legend of 'The Wild Hunt'.
Praise and plays, including the accolade of BBC Radio 2 single of the week, make the forthcoming sophomore album, recorded in October 2011 with Paul Savage (Franz Ferdinand, The Phantom Band, Arab Strap) in the legendary Chem 19 studios, one of the most hotly-anticpated of 2012.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Red Eyed Fly (715 Red River St Austin, TX)

The duo of brothers, Andy and James Ralph, bashes, crashes, strums and shouts their way through songs that are scummy cement floor odes to real life, sung through aquarium glass to the prettiest girls they’ll never meet. People say there’s something about brother music, an ingredient that makes the harmonies soar higher and the beats slam harder. It’s not really something you can pin down or describe in words—it’s something you have to hear… whether it comes from siblings growing up sharing a room, or from a listener hoping for something different.

Wymond Miles
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Elysium (705 Red River St 78701)
Four years ago Wymond Miles, guitar player and songwriter in San Francisco’s The Fresh & Onlys, began writing solo material thematically based on the concepts of eschatology, anthroposophy, and Hermetic symbolism. Drawing from a vast musical pool of inspiration, including Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt, Arvo Part, and Nikki Sudden amongst others, Earth Has Doors is Miles’ first solo release. Since beginning Miles had basically shelved these songs to attend school, focus on fatherhood, and commit to the demanding schedule of the F&O’s. He earned a degree in humanities with an emphasis on the philosophical implications of the ecological/economic crisis of our times, and that subject matter can be traced throughout his first EP. These songs concisely yet esoterically document the existential crisis of our current epoch — moving from the nothingness of modern materialism, fragmented reductionist thought, and drug escapism to a world imbued with subjectivity and meaning through a new relationship with the Earth and cosmos as alive and full of inherent intelligence.

You Can't Win, Charlie Brown
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Karma Lounge (105 E 5th St)

You Can't Win, Charlie Brown is a Portuguese band formed in early 2009 by Afonso Cabral, Salvador Meneses and Luís Costa, but quickly turned into a 4-piece with the addition of David Santos (a.k.a. Noiserv) to the band's lineup. They released their self-titled debut EP through Optimus Discos in February of 2010, which features 6 home recorded songs that combine a Portuguese sense of melancholy with the British/American musical aesthetic of such artists as Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Nick Drake or Sufjan Stevens. The EP received great reviews from the local press and web circuit and the next months were dedicated to live performances, for which they recruited Tomás Sousa and João Gil, both of which they already knew from previous bands. It didn't take long to realize this 6 piece version of the band was the best they've ever sounded, so with this complete lineup the band began to work on their debut album.

Anenon
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:50pm @ Barcelona (209 E 6th St)

Despite a childhood steeped in music, Brian Allen Simon only began to appreciate his dad’s records after he developed an obsession with hip hop in his teens and went to college to study music. After an intense love affair with the saxophone, an internship at seminal LA label Alpha Pup and a journey through Music History and Theory at UCLA, Brian landed at the foot of his own label, Non Projects, releasing music from artists such as Asura and Ana Caravelle along with remixes that range from Ghostly’s Shigeto to Julia Holter. He’s no slouch in the studio himself either, and as Anenon has seen his physically and emotionally engaging sounds appear in the form of a split EP with Asura (Non Projects), remixes for artists such as Shlohmo on Error Broadcast, Take on Alpha Pup (one of Daddy Kev’s selected top Alpha Pup tracks) and a standout piece on Brownswood Elctr*c 2, released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint. Taking his inspiration from the environment around him as much as the sounds in his own head, Brian can coax an eerie cinematic tension from almost anything.

Sonnymoon
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:00pm - 8:50pm @ Speakeasy Kabaret (412 Congress Ave)

Once upon no time, countless light-years from Earth, the cosmos revealed the moment had come to take action. Sonnymoon, a mystical, nurturing, peaceful planet, found itself on a collision course with Earth, whose inhabitants had a dubious history of preaching peace yet living lives of war. History had once before shown that when worlds collide, the trauma of such a collision is forceful enough to cause a massive rip in the time/space continuum, throwing all things as we know it into uncharted territory. One effect of this rip is the potential for chaos, mayhem, and complete destruction. But, as fate would have it, Sonnymoon had written it quite differently.
As known on Sonnymoon, the people of Earth are able to vibrationally align with Sonnymoon through gradual contact. That which no longer serves the people will fall away, creating the Golden Age of being. This communion of vibrational frequency results in a vastly expanded collective consciousness. It is most easily achieved through the creation and sharing of music.
So as all planets do, Sonnymoon created the perfect beings to self-fulfill the prophecy. From the deepest depths of the sea they called forth an energy entity to be called Anna, comprised of feminine aspects: wisdom, water, land, emotion, passion, moonlight. From the core of the sun they called forth a polar energy to be named Dane, comprised of the masculine: intelligence, fire, wind, cognition, sunlight. Together they formed the perfect celestial balance of non-duality –embodying Sonnymoon itself.
Anna and Dane soon set forth as journeymen, ambassadors of their world, and were given but one mission – find allies and prepare Earth for the energies of the coming planet, thereby averting catastrophe.
Upon first landing on Earth, they noticed the void was vast and deep. This would be no simple task. Dane quickly found that the music Earth most often communicated via airwaves was not indicative of the wants (or needs) of the people. Meanwhile, Anna was challenged to make sense of foreign concepts such as ignorance, mediocrity, and perhaps worst of all, suburbia. But they pressed on, creating music that undoubtedly expanded the minds of all that that were ready. And in due time, Sonnymoon found a powerful ally with the team at Plug Research.
Sonnymoon is part of the fertile ground by which the new and innovative springs forth. They are an army of the audible, a musical militia manned by two. There is no time to prepare sufficiently for their coming– they have already arrived and the mass-scale invasion is imminent. For those receptive to their transmission – prepare for your world to change.
But fear not, Earthlings, they come in peace.

    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:10pm - 8:45pm @ Beauty Bar Backyard (617 E 7th St)

Habibi is the brainchild of Rahill Jamalifard and Lenny Lynch. Together, the two Detroit natives started the all-girl, Brooklyn-based project in the spring of 2011. Growing up with the harmonious sounds of Motown and the punk attitudes of Quatro and Iggy, their music invokes the same simplicity and fiery spirit. Jamalifard’s Persian ancestry and Lynch’s love of Middle Eastern culture are evident in the bands name (Habibi’s translation is my love in Arabic), their mystical lyrics, and their eastern tinged melodies.

The colloquialism “caddywhompus” is defined by such adjectives as “uneven,” “crooked” and “out of whack”—a list which could, in some instances, allude to the mind-bending sounds of the experimental noise-pop band who bears said name but whom can otherwise be described thus: spot on. Quasi-fraternal twins Sean Hart (drums) and Chris Rehm (guitar/vocals) have been playing music together since their middle school days, establishing their most serious project to date in September of 2008. Since then, they have played over 150 shows, the majority of them outside their native waters. With a daunting assortment of amplifiers and effects-pedal tweakery, the duo executes its incredibly loud and at times nearly overwhelming sets with an impeccable musicianship and live presence. Song structures alternate between sweet psychedelic indie ballads to the most intense, ear-splitting of noise-driven crescendos. Showcasing such raw emotion everywhere from cramped basements to the swankest of clubs, delivering sonic rapture to both veteran punks and seasoned hipsters alike.

Maya Azucena
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 8:15pm - 8:45pm @ The Belmont (305 West 6th Street, Austin, TX, 78701)

MTV Made’s Award winning indie star Maya Azucena has a progressive yet accessible style, transcending genres and trends. Like Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Corinne Bailey Rae, or Cee-lo Green, she embodies a singular and finely honed artistry through a combination of her profound lyrics, soaring melodies, and irresistible rhythms.

Billboard and the Washington Post have heralded her mesmerizing performances as well as the Village Voice who said, “armed with a powerfully compelling voice, Azucena just could be the most impressive of the current hip-hop/soul/r&b diva crop.” Her recent performance at SXSW prompted the Austin Chronicle to declare her the “Best Pipes” at the festival. One Okay Player review explains, “Azucena received prominent notice in 2007 when she appeared on Stephen Marley’s Grammy-winning Mind Control album, but her pipes have been heard on projects all over the world benefiting various causes. In Brooklyn and beyond, she’s known for her humanitarian efforts in support of domestic abuse victims and disadvantaged youth. These elements combine to give all her songs a message of encouragement… the girl’s is addicted to positivity.”
