Scorpio Rising
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:00pm - 9:40pm @ Headhunters (720 Red River Austin, TX)

Scorpio Rising is an electro/dance/rock band from Austin, Texas, whose recordings and intense live performances have made them one of Austin’s premiere entertainment commodities. Hailed as one of Austin’s best Goth/Industrial bands and DJ bands by the Austin Chronicle Music Poll,
Scorpio Rising’s fans have likened their sound to The Rolling Stones meet Scissor Sisters, with vocals reminiscent of Cyndi Lauper, Shirley Manson, and Madonna, polished with a touch of Motown.
Scorpio Rising started in the mid 1990’s as a side project of Austin Funk outfit Retarted Elf’s vocalist/dancer Madame Scorpio and guitarist Wonderbred. The two had compiled a huge catalogue of new material and wanted to take it to the stage. Scorpio Rising has built a diverse and loyal fan base throughout Texas, playing consistently in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Belton, Dallas, Bryan/College Station and Corpus Christi. Festival appearances include the Central Texas State Fair, SXSW showcase, 10th Annual GoGirls Music Fest, 2010 & 2011 Art Outside Festival and 2009 & 2011 Eeyores birthday party.
Scorpio Rising’s debut recording, Scorpio Tales was written, recorded and produced by Wonderbred and Madame Scorpio. Their sophomore effort, Vain Bastard was a full band effort and included songs “Get It Up” and “Eerie,” which have both enjoyed publishing success and can be heard on The Discovery Network, a compilation CD release from the WB network, clothing ads, and video game song distribution.
The band’s release of Feels Good was in July 2008 to rave reviews by fans and critics alike. An EP, The last one Standing, was released May 2010, after Madame Scorpio battled Breast Cancer.
Scorpio Rising’s current line-up includes Madame Scorpio on vocals, Wonderbred on bass and guitar
D.J. Bixler on drums. This incarnation has been performing, touring and recording together for the past five years.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Buffalo Billiards (201 E 6th St)

Ishi formed in Dallas, Tx as a duo with JT Mudd & Brad Dale at the end of 2006. Their sound derived from their vision to unify the instrumentation of Folk music with the endless soundscapes of electronic production. They started the recording process early 2007 with the intent to take their listeners on a uplifting journey exploring new sounds & resolving back to their forefather "Folk" which inspired it all. Ishi released their debut record "Through The Trees" May, 2010 & received two awards in the 2010 Dallas Observer Music Awards for "Best New Act" & "Best Electronic/Dance Act". In 2011 the band was nominated again for "Best Electronic/Dance Act" & received the award on 10/18/11.

Tycho
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:30pm - 12:10am @ Mohawk (912 Red River)
Tycho is the music project of San Francisco artist and producer Scott Hansen. As Tycho, Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend into the horizon. Known in the design world as ISO50, Hansen is famed for his bucolic, sun-drenched design style, which serves as a backdrop and mirror for his musical output. Hansen began his electronic-music career with 2002’s The Science of Patterns EP , which was followed in 2004 by his first full length, Sunrise Projector.

Bodytronix
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Jr (603 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)

"Austin's Bodytronix (Eric Archer and Erich Ragsdale) have been hard at work for awhile without anyone outside of their fair city really knowing what these dudes were up to. Well, if their live mix "Night of the Arawans" is any indication, the duo might be at the forefront of a wildly maligned 31st century exploration of deep house and its acid tinged offshoots. It has a straightup hookers and X vibe, but somehow its not seedy. Rather it's twisted in a Lynchian way, with droning synths weaving about navigational beats, as propelling as their are hypnotizing." -Chocolate Bobka

CFCF, aka Michael Silver, has managed to build a world all his own since his debut LP ‘Continent’, an impressive collage of vintage electronic textures evoking grandiose landscapes worthy of a Michael Mann film. ‘The River’, an EP based partly on Werner Herzog’s classic film Fitzcarraldo, deepened a growing obsession with conjuring far-away landscapes and voyages through a style which is at times melancholy, propulsive and ecstatic. Working in genres ranging from house and disco to ambient and new age to rap and R&B, and pulling influences from Peter Gabriel and Popol Vuh to Mr. Fingers and DJ Screw, CFCF’s music is at once versatile and far-reaching yet eminently listenable and recognizably pop, and always vivid.

Despite a childhood steeped in music, Brian Allen Simon only began to appreciate his dad’s records after he developed an obsession with hip hop in his teens and went to college to study music. After an intense love affair with the saxophone, an internship at seminal LA label Alpha Pup and a journey through Music History and Theory at UCLA, Brian landed at the foot of his own label, Non Projects, releasing music from artists such as Asura and Ana Caravelle along with remixes that range from Ghostly’s Shigeto to Julia Holter. He’s no slouch in the studio himself either, and as Anenon has seen his physically and emotionally engaging sounds appear in the form of a split EP with Asura (Non Projects), remixes for artists such as Shlohmo on Error Broadcast, Take on Alpha Pup (one of Daddy Kev’s selected top Alpha Pup tracks) and a standout piece on Brownswood Elctr*c 2, released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood imprint. Taking his inspiration from the environment around him as much as the sounds in his own head, Brian can coax an eerie cinematic tension from almost anything.

Anoraak

When Frederic Riviere says something along the lines of “the sun and the sea are really important to me,” it’s easy to think, ‘Oh great, another chillwave artist who enjoys long walks on the beach and sitting on the dock of the bay all day.’
If only things were that simple. While he’s certainly into laser-guided synth lines and sepia-toned nostalgia trips, Riviere’s debut album as Anoraak (Wherever the Sun Sets) is more indebted to Italo disco, Motown-schooled funk and sepia-toned pop music—think: M83 on Ecstasy—than anything that’s lo-or-glo-fi. Which makes sense. After all, it’s not like the French producer/singer/multi-instrumentalist picked up his first battery-powered keyboard yesterday. Truth be told, Anoraak began as a bedroom-based project about eight years ago, as Riviere searched for sound engineer work and found nothing but bar gigs.

Based in Denver, CO, Egedy resides in the notorious rave-punk-house Rhinoceropolis. Thanks in large part to Pictureplane's legendary shows at Rhino, his raging club night, "Real is a Feeling", and his constant stream of mixtapes and remixes, Denver's vibrant DIY scene has started to morph into a national movement. Egedy's growing influence can be felt in ways that are both trivial -- Egedy coined the ridiculous genre term "Witch House" in 2009 -- and significant: Pictureplane's punk rock-like approach to the production and dissemination of his work is democratizing electronic music the same way the Ramones, Minor Threat, and Black Flag liberated rock music in the 70s and 80s.

Silver Swans take their name from the group of super-villains in the Wonder Woman comic book series. The evil Swans have the ability to create a powerful “swan song” of sound waves using their voices that is capable of devouring a small area of land with its destructive force. By creating a low-level humming, the Silver Swan can also form a protective shield around herself to deflect bullets and o...ther projectiles. The musical counterpart Silver Swans, however, are far from the evil and destruction of their namesake. The electro dream-pop project captures the haunting dramatics and the pure beauty of life and dreams to build a dynamic, exultant sound all their own.

Sleep ∞ Over was formed in early 2010 in Austin TX. With a few rough demos recorded live on a handheld tape recorder, the band (consisting at the time of Stefanie Franciotti and former members Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown) quickly attracted the attention of the esteemed Night People label who released the first Sleep ∞ Over EP on cassette. Although the tape came during a flood of hazy lo-fi releases, Sleep ∞ Over’s melodically-driven aesthetic rose to the top of the saturated genre. Boutique vinyl label Light Lodge also released a song from the Night People tape on a split 7” with fellow Austin band Pure X. In spring 2010, the band pulled their poignant melodies and classic pop song structures out of the murk and released a lush and expansive sounding group of songs on a 7” for Forest Family records which sold out in less than a week.

Vanbot
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ Buca Lounge (422 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701)

Late night bike riding in Stockholm and endless love for retro synthesizers inspired Ester Ideskog, Sweden, to compose synth heavey electro pop hits under her new alias Vanbot.
Vanbot has been making music since the early teen years and was constantly searching for the right sound, but she often found herself a little too sprawling. After the completion of “Bitter is the sweetest part” her music finally found it’s voice. In the little studio with the oversized world map Vanbot’s dreams can fly freely to compose electronic soundscapes inspired by synthesizers and drum machines.
All material is written by Vanbot herself and produced by partner Sebastian Forslund who also worked with Swedish indie artists I Break Horses, Blackstrap and Loney, Dear.
Her self-titled debut album was released last spring and was followed by a remix EP with work from Niva, Fear of Tigers and Bremen. Being heavily praised in Europe Vanbot is now hitting US with NYLON Magazine and MTV Buzzworthy loving her latest single.

Artists take on pseudonyms for a multitude of reasons, but in Zach Saginaw’s case, those reasons run deeper than most. Zach records under the name Shigeto. It’s his middle name; it’s also his grandfather’s name, a tribute to the Japanese branch of Zach’s family tree. Shigeto also means “to grow bigger”—appropriate, given Zach’s premature birth-weight of less than a pound. Today, Shigeto stands for Zach’s vividly beautiful electronic music. Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades.

College
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 10:30pm - 11:10pm @ Mohawk Patio (912 Red River St)
College, from his real name David Grellier, is a French electronic music composer born in 1979 in Nantes. At the end of the 90s, he purchased his first computer, with which he realized numerous demos influenced by artists such as Jeff Mills, Aphex Twin and labels such as Soma Records, Peacefrog or still Warp. In April 2007, he met Anoraak and decided to create a blog to share their most recent productions: the Valerie project was born. Other artists such as The Outrunners, Maethelvin or even Russ Chimes would soon join the blog. His first Ep Teenage Color was released that same year and allowed him to meet the German illustrators The Zonders.
A collaboration started then with the latter for all the flyers related to the Valerie Parties, as well as all the records and projects which are associated to them. An identity and a musical movement evoking a kind of nostalgia from the 80s arose and the international press started to notice the productions associated with Valerie. In 2009, while his first album entitled Secret Diary was being released, College toured with Anoraak all through the biggest capitals in Europe, the United States and Australia. College also collaborated closely with the Canadian duet Electric Youth, who participated to the Ep A Real Hero, released on the Belgian label Flexx Records. In the meantime, Valerie became a real label by producing two 7inch with the support of the New-York collective Free Danger.
After four years of existence, Valerie creates today a new subdivision in its catalog. Entitled Composer Series, this entity aims at releasing a series of special pieces composed and interpreted with one or several hands. Real items, these special pieces which are mainly unique instrumental works will take the shape of short-lived projects. This new collection will be available soon in laser disc (limited edition) as well as in digital, and the new record by College, Northern Council, will be its first release.

Youth Lagoon
    Wednesday March 14, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ IFC Crossroads House at Vice (302 E. 6th St., Austin, TX 78701)
Twenty-two year old Trevor Powers, whose musical venture is called Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he’s been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life – the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living.
“Youth Lagoon isn’t me.” says Powers. “It’s merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn’t until this last year – when I realized I was more than just music – that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon.”
Throughout the course of 2010, Powers began to write an album about things he had a hard time talking about. He claims that when he tries to talk about it to people, he doesn’t make sense. So he wrote an album about it entitled The Year of Hibernation. “For my whole life I’ve dealt with extreme anxiety.” says Powers. “Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird.. bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I’m literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it.”
Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic. Powers claims his music is like letting people read his journal. “I don’t think I could ever write a completely happy album. It’s not that I’m not a happy person,” claims Powers, “but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.”

New Moods
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

The seeds of New Moods sprouted a couple years ago in small house on the outskirts of Bushwick. After hours of overhearing his housemate artist/vocalist Billy Jones (Other Passengers) feverishly writing and recording rough demos for a solo project, producer/engineer Sean Maffucci (Icewater Scandal) was quickly inspired to get involved. Having spent the better part of the last 4 years producing and engineering albums from his Junkyard studio, (Bear in Heaven, Gang Gang Dance , et al) Maffucci knew he wanted to contribute. With the help of his magical hands, he quickly laid down some beat and synth programming over an early version of the song “Dying/Trying.” Immediately upon first listen Jones and Maffucci knew they were on to something special – thus the birth of New Moods.

Thomas Dolby was an indelible part of the electronic music landscape on both sides of the Atlantic in the ’80s. The Zelig of synthpop, he was seemingly there or thereabouts at all points of that crucial decade. He enjoyed huge solo success with the singles “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive!”, composed and performed on hits for everyone from AOR giants Foreigner to none-more-quirky new wave girl Lene Lovich, produced three superlative albums for Prefab Sprout, and even co-wrote the much-sampled early rap classic “Magic’s Wand” by Whodini.

Filastine
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:50am @ Speakeasy Kabaret (412 Congress Ave)
Grey Filastine is an audio-visual artist born in Los Angeles, based in Barcelona, and often nomadic. He composes a dense transnational bass music that collides the lowest frequencies of dubstep with the highest-level beat science, acoustic strings, voices, and gathered street noises. The results are “Awesome and delicate… hybrids so fluent they defy classification.” -Pitchfork
Filastine’s debut record, Burn It , was released in 2006 by DJ Rupture to much critical acclaim: “Filled with both with jagged edges and moments of sad sweetness ... Burn It is sure to win fans across multiple scenes”- XLR8R. The album ricocheted around the world, licensed and re-released by labels in France, Japan, and the US. The follow up album, Dirty Bomb, dropped in 2009 through an alliance of labels led by French electro-dub imprint Jarring Effects. Prefix Mag called it “the prototype of globalized urban sound... It will devastate your subwoofer.”
Performing up to a hundred concerts per year, Filastine triggers live riddims and synchronized video from a heap of electronics wired to an amplified shopping cart. You may have seen him at a sweaty Tokyo nightclub, a football stadium in Casablanca, a respected euro-fest like Sónar, in a parking lot in Borneo, or touring the US with Bassnectar.
Before making electronic music Filastine played with the Infernal Noise Brigade, a marching band he founded for the Battle of Seattle. He continues to use audio as a tool of intervention with the Sound Swarm, an orchestra of bikemounted megaphones conducted by pirate radios transmitters.
Spring of 2012 will see the release of a new album made in tighter collaboration with Javanese vocalist Nova Ruth and Lyon-based cellist Amélie Bouard. Expect to find Filastine anywhere, crashing borders and transforming friction into beauty.

Nguzunguzu
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:10am - 12:50am @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
Nguzunguzu's (prounounced en-goo-zoo-en-goo-zoo) bubbling, otherworldly productions stitch percussively forward experimental sounds into a club-friendly framework. Alongside kindred spirits in the Fade To Mind crew (Kingdom, Total Freedom) Nguzunguzu seamlessly cross genres, tempos, and atmospheres to create a new emotive electronic club realm that immerses body and mind. It's something that has to be experienced to truly understand. Describing their own sound as "sad, sexy, scary", making you move isn't their only mission...they want to make you feel, maybe cry, and then dance the pain away.
Raised on 90s R&B/Hip-Hop radio and underground club music, the Los Angeles based duo (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) revere contemporary, radio-friendly producers like The Dream or Bangladesh to be cutting edge as many of the current fringe electronic movements and trends. While they reference the explicitly experimental modern sounds of Footwork and House-inflected UK Bass, Nguzunguzu dig deep to compliment those sounds finding some of the freshest urban pop happening now domestically and globally, both obscure and mainstream.

Purity Ring
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:45am @ Chevrolet Sound Garage (612 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Megan James and Corin Roddick formed their "future pop" project Purity Ring only a year ago, but the duo have been musically active on their own for much longer. Originally from Edmonton, 23-year-old vocalist and trained pianist James started writing lyrics when she was 16. Twenty-year-old Roddick-- a former touring member of patchy electro outfit Gobble Gobble -- has drummed in various hometown bands since he was 14. But Purity Ring finds both members abandoning their live instruments in favor of stammering beats and pitched-down vocals derived from Roddick's love of Southern hip-hop.
The pair have only released 3 songs thus far "Ungirthed", and "Lofticries" and "Belispeak". On all three tracks, James' ghostly, Knife-like vocals are weaved into Roddick's skittering instrumentals, conveying an emotional and sonic disconnect-- fitting since their process involves Roddick sending his beats to James, who then adds her vocals. (The two live in different Canadian cities now, with Roddick stationed in Montreal and James in Halifax.)

Christeene
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:10am - 1:50am @ The Iron Bear (121 W 8th St, Austin, TX 78701)
CHRISTEENE has been characterized as being a sexually infused sewer of live rap and vile shamelessness, capable of adapting amazingly well to all styles of music.
Attempts at gathering personal information on CHRISTEENE concerning age, origin, race, religion and even gender have proven fruitless, leaving the public to rely primarily on a highly stylized collection of music videos released through the singer’s collaborative efforts with award winning filmmaker and cinematographer, PJ Raval...who remains silent on the subject of their relationship.
It is noted that CHRISTEENE commands a stage presence of furious intensity accompanied by a strict regiment of hardcore dance and destructive choreography. The singer's impressive sound arsenal showcases a wide range of musical appreciation and mastery ranging from Electro to R&B, Hip Hop to Dub Step, with titles including 'Fix My Dick', 'Tears From My Pussy', 'African Mayonnaise’ and ‘Bustin’ Brown’. These songs, written by the artist, offer an intimate and fascinating glimpse into the private and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of this talented nightmare.
Reports from live shows describe scenes involving butt plugs tied to bouquets of balloons being released into the air from CHRISTEENE's arse, intimate and bizarre confessionals over tea, backup boys in handmade Panda masks urinating on canvas sacks containing the singer, and a DIY anti-fashion wardrobe styled from the forgotten scraps of society. Appearing alongside CHRISTEENE are two sexually distinct Backup Boyz, T-Gravel and C-Baby, along with accompanying DJ/ music producer, JJ Booya, rumored to be the entertainer's third cousin.
Multiple sightings of CHRISTEENE have been documented in AUSTIN, TX – South by Southwest 2010/11, Queerbomb, Homoscope. SAN FRANCISCO – Folsom Street Fair, Trannyshack, Bearracuda, SomeThing, Hard French, Homo-a-go-go. LOS ANGELES – Bears in Space, Shits n Giggles, Big Fat Dick, The Wildness. NEW YORK CITY – The ‘F’ Word, Greenhouse. PORTLAND – Blowpony/ Portland Pride. NEW ORLEANS – The Hook Up w/ Big Freedia, Bearracuda. PARIS – ‘Spotlight Club’ w/ fashion designer Rick Owens and Michele Lamy. STOCKHOLM – ‘Slick’ at the Sodra Teatern. BERLIN – Ficken 3000.
The singer’s music videos have been showcased in the film festivals of: SXSW, Rooftop Films, Paris Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, CFMDC's Queer City Cinema's Tour "Wide Open Wide", Homo-a-go-go, Prince George lesbian and gay film festival, Regina gay and lesbian film festival, and the International Short Film Festival/ Detmold…to name a few.
It should be noted that CHRISTEENE's music, media and live shows have cast an unprecedented net over a demographic including married men, dykes, queers, single women, bears, fraternity brothers, motor hogs, and people of the medical profession; clearly signifying a rapidly growing pandemic on popular culture as we know it.
The debut album from CHRISTEENE, 'Waste Up, Kneez Down', is set to be released in early 2012, fresh off the heels of the EP 'Soldier of Pleasure', which is currently on sale at christeene.org.

Fronted by the energetic Sarah Marco, Taken by Cars offers a modern, dynamic sound that typically combines precise interplay from the rhythm section, carefully orchestrated guitar and synth lines, and Sarah’s fairly androgynous but genuinely compelling vocals. The fact that the band is mostly composed of longtime friends who’ve been playing music together since their high school days is another major aspect that contributes to their tight chemistry.

When Trevor McFedries, a country kid from Iowa, realized the college he received a football scholarship to was not helping him achieve his goals, he decided to pack his bags and head to LA. A few too many nights out on the town coupled with an affinity for Lil Jon resulted in the birth of DJ SKEET SKEET and before he knew it, he was spinning all over the place from celebrity hot spots like Hyde Lounge in Hollywood and hipster hangouts like NYC's Studio B to casino mega clubs like Rain and Surrender. In 2007, SKEET teamed up with LA natives and longtime friends Shwayze and Cisco Adler to complete the "Shwayze" outfit and were quickly signed to Geffen Records. During his time with Shwayze, he became the first DJ to play the entire Vans Warped Tour.
Along with his stellar live DJ sets, SKEET SKEET stays at the forefront with remixes for acts like Katy Perry, Fergie, Broken Social Scene, John Legend, The Ting Tings, Mike Posner, Jessie & The Toy Boys, Boys Like Girls, Shop Boyz and Shwayze, plus the free mix tapes he offers through his FaceBook (www.facebook.com/djskeetskeet). Most recently, SKEET's remix of Ke$sha's "Blah Blah Blah" was featured on her I Am The Dance Commander + I Command You To Dance: The Remix Album and was the music director for her live performances. Additional highlights include a guest appearance as a contestant with longtime buddies 3Oh!3 on MTV's “Silent Library,” two nominations for Paper magazine for DJ of the Year (winner in 2008), a feature in Katy Perry's documentary on E! and was touted "LA's Best DJ" by BlackBook. Commented Charlie Amter of BlackBookmag.com (12/9/10), “…Skeet Skeet doesn’t follow trends, he sets them.” Check out the full BlackBook.com story at: http://www.blackbookmag.com/article/is-skeet-skeet-las-best-dj/23827.

Purity Ring
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:00pm - 10:30pm @ Central Presbyterian Church (200 E 8th St)

Soft Metals
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:15pm - 10:50pm @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)

Soft Metals is a multi-disciplinary electronic duo from Portland, Oregon now residing in Los Angeles, California. Its members Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall were brought together through a common love of 1970s and 80s synthesizer music and began writing and recording songs together in the spring of 2009. Inspiration came to them by way of experimental electronic sounds, film soundtracks, early industrial music, minimal synth, house, techno, synth pop, krautrock, psychedelic rock, and shoegaze. Ian and Patricia share songwriting duties and compose the music together before writing lyrics and adding vocals. Their songs are built from moody, improvised sessions together using exclusively electronic instruments. The meaning of the raw music they make is explored and interpreted afterwards with lyrical themes ranging from life experience, films, literature, history, science, love, conflict, and death. Soft Metals prefer to express themselves freely rather than adhere to a particular genre. This freedom gives them a diverse sound somewhere between dance music, austere synthetic pop, and experimental electronic composition. Their two best known songs, "The Cold World Melts" and "Psychic Driving" are demonstrations of this varied sound. "The Cold World Melts" is driving, assertive, and passionate. "Psychic Driving" is delicate, introverted, and vulnerable. Some of their songs remain in their unpolished improvised form to pay homage to authenticity, spontaneity, the joy of sound, and experimentation while others are studio based exercises, fusing new and old production technologies.

Teengirl Fantasy
    Thursday March 15, 2012 10:30pm - 11:00pm @ Beauty Bar Backyard (617 E 7th St)

Boasting an almost Google-proof name, Teengirl Fantasy is the project of Nick Weiss and Logan Takahashi. Weiss and Takahashi, who craft an atmospheric yet driving sound -- borrowing from deep house, shoegaze, and other styles -- that makes critics coin terms like “dream-beat,” met during orientation at Ohio’s Oberlin College and began making music together a few weeks later. They put up a MySpace page for Teengirl Fantasy, but it was when their songs were featured on the blog 20 Jazz Funk Greats that they gained an audience. Remixes of artists including tourmates Telepathe and a radically reworked version of Mariah Carey's “Touch My Body,” along with the downloadable EP TGIF and singles on Dick Move and Merok, furthered the buzz around the band. Takahashi and Weiss moved to the Netherlands to study at Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academie for four months, but returned to Oberlin for 2010's spring semester. Teengirl Fantasy's full-length debut, 7AM, arrived in September of that year on True Panther/Merok. They have toured around the world and supported Animal Collective, Crystal Castles, and James Blake all in the past year.

Vanbot
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Deseo Centro Lounge (219 Congress Ave)

Housemeister never sleeps. Playing everywhere and every weekend ever since '97, the legendary DJ has cultivated his own brand of rave around the world: relentless, hardcore, dirty dancefloor ecstasy. Hands in the air, booties bouncing: techno in its total beauty. 4 releases on Ellen Alien's BPitch Control, a killer debut album „Enlarge your Dose“ on Boysnoize Records; 10 tracks and his legendary second album „Who is that Noize?“on his own label allyoucanbeat; several more BNR maxis and the march 2011 release of full-length madness „Shizzo“, produced with BoysNoize himself, have certainly kicked Housemeister on top of the pile of world class hellraisers and prepared audiences for his latest solo album effort out on BNR: „Music is Awesome“. When you put it simple like that after 15 years of destroying dancefloors, when you're releasing on rave label number one, when your friends Modeselektor are calling you „the best DJ on earth“, you don't need a pussy ass biography, now do ya!?

    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:20pm - 12:10am @ Speakeasy Kabaret (412 Congress Ave)
Cleopatra Records electrorock/dubsteb artist Blackburner has just been tapped to support MINISTRY on its summer 2012 national tour.
Blackburner is a bold new force in electronic music, combining the heavily twisted and seriously aggressive beats of dubstep and glitch with the melodic hooks of rock, industrial, and electronica. It is masterminded by producer/musician Skyla Talon, a Michigan-born Los Angeles transplant who cut his teeth with the modern metal band Killingbird and later joined Scum Of The Earth with former Rob Zombie axeman Riggs. Inspired by the revolutionary new sounds in electronic music generated by the likes of fellow metal-head-turned-DJ Skrillex, Talon began the Blackburner project remixing tracks and releasing original compositions through the Cleopatra imprint Hypnotic Records.
The project immediately met with enormous success, as compilations featuring Blackburner climbed the iTunes Electronic charts, racking up over 50,000 individual downloads. Now joined by former Chicago-based metal musician K Kyle (who also performs in hard rock band ModelSaint with Talon), Blackburner is preparing to release a full-length record in April 2012. FEEL THE BURN will feature guest appearances by Edgar Froese of electronic pioneer Tangerine Dream as well as John Wesley of Porcupine Tree.

At seventeen, he began releasing music on the Brooklyn imprint Wolf + Lamb, and was catapulted into the Atlantic dance music scene. But he always wanted to slow down and grow roots as an artist. Instead of finding a creative home, Nico decided to make his own. On his nineteenth birthday, he founded Clown & Sunset. The label extended his collaboration with Soul and Nikita, and became an outlet for his most honest work. Over the last two years, Nico has composed for the Sunset of a Clown series,Russian Dolls, WOUH and Inès and DARKSIDE. He has completed his first album, Space is Only Noise, and finally returned home. From New York City, Nico will reveal his latest work, Don’t Break My Love, and choreograph Clown & Sunset.

RAC mixes typically feature a unique blend of hip-hop and vintage drum machine samples, analog synthesizers, melodic hooks, and original performed instrumentation by the remix artists themselves. Unlike many electronic remixes, which are commonly technical and precise, RAC mixes embody a unique aesthetic based around emotion and nuance, an almost intangible warmth and innate playfulness.

Strip Steve
    Friday March 16, 2012 12:30am - 1:00am @ Beauty Bar (617 E. Seventh St. Austin, TX)

As any cool kid of the 90's, Strip Steve grew up with Offspring, the
passion more or less regular of skateboard, and the art of
turntablism. Few scratches and a failure in a rap band after, he
remembered how much Armand van Helden, Cassius & Daft Punk's videos he
used to watch before "Yo MTV rap" started, torn his sentimental life,
    and more his whole existence.
He started mixing at 14 with his first turntables, and slowly made
parties with his friends in his hometown (Bordeaux) that mixed every
kind of music they found exciting, with always one purpose: that the
    people had fun very simply.

2007, Steve is now 20 and listen for most to House & Techno. Inspired
by the masters Dj Sneak & Paul Johnson, as much as by listening to the
Crydamoure compilations, his goal is to bring back House where it
    should never left: the dancefloor.
And he knows how to do: his dj sets make crashing Chicago House
classics (Robert Armani, Dj Pierre, Marshall Jefferson, Armando...),
nowadays Techno Anthems (Boys Noize, the french record labels
Institubes & Ed Banger...), early 90's Rave
Ufos (this kid has fascination for for Prodigy & Bizarre Inc.) or the
best 12" electronic music has ever made (Masters at Work, Romanthony,
    Daft Punk, LFO, Joey Beltram...).

2008, At the beginning of the year Strip Steve released his first EP
on Boysnoize Records. Yet another proof by Labelboss Alex Ridha that
he supports young & fresh talents. Bookings all over Europe and his
first Austrlia Tour has been the result of it.
Many artists got interested to his own special sound and Remixes for
Shadow Dancer (BNR), Van She (Modular) and Outlander (R&S) followed.
Another huge milestone in his life took place on the 2nd half of the
year. Falling in love with the german capital Steve moved from his
mum's house in Bordeaux to Berlin to life as a free man and start
    concentrating on his music.
During tea time and a short session with Boys Noize, Steve
participates in the making of a track which will become a huge single
(named Jeffer) of the furthcoming Album calle"d Power".

2009, In this year finally the whole world could get inspired by the
Strip Steve sound. Every weekend another show. Tokyo, Sydney,
Auckland, Support Act for the "Boys Noize Power Tour" and whole Europe
were stops by the New Berliner.
During his Tour he still found time to work on banging remixes for
artists such as The Faint (BNR), Adam Sparkle & Dave P (Satellite of
Love), Das Glow (Institubes) and his 9 minute acid banger for
    G.L.O.V.E.S. (Bang Gang).
Although his neighbours freaked out, end 2009 Steve could finish his
new EP called Delta Disco. With great feedback of his fans and big
support by artists like 2many DJs, Busy P, Erol Alkan, Mylo, Dj Feadz, Boris Dlugosh, Andy & Jaymo (BBC One), Dexpistols, Surkin and Bobmo.

Youth Lagoon
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:40am @ Club de Ville (900 Red River St.)

“I got laid off from my job at the end of last year and decided I needed a change. My girlfriend put in her two weeks and we moved out to a little cabin in Papaikou, Hawaii. It’s a pretty remote place outside of Hilo (i.e no plumbing/electricity/gas). We worked for meals during the day cultivating indigenous microorganisms and learning the basics of sustainable living. We drank showered and cooked with rain water. It was a beautifully simple experience. In our downtime, she would paint and I would record. We’d have to light candles in an effort to save solar power to keep my computer running. We inspired each other a lot out there, and I think it shows on the album. She sings on a lot of the tracks on All Night. The music comes from a place of love and ease. The video for Endless Spring was shot there in our spare time, and the music was sketched out loosely over the course of a few months. We just kind of melted into one person. We were able to keep our heads above water for a few months before we both went broke and moved back to Chicago last month. I put together all the arrangements and field recordings over the last few weeks, and that became All Night. “

Shout Out Out Out Out
    Friday March 16, 2012 1:00am - 1:55am @ Trinity Hall (401 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Spanish Moss And Total Loss, Shout Out Out Out Out's third full length album since forming in 2004, is their most melodic, textured, and interesting record to date. The new album shows Shout Out Out Out Out growing as songwriters, with a strong melodic focus, and an expanded base of instrumentation. Their vast collection of analog synths has grown, and features very heavily, alongside saxophone, Rhodes piano, baritone guitar, and of course their signature double drummers, and vocoder laden vocals. The new album features a wider variety of tempos and feels than Shout Out Out Out Out's acclaimed previous two albums, while still maintaining the dancefloor filling energy they are known for. The influence of Disco, classic House, Krautrock and cosmic synth music are all present, with a hint of the punk background and ethic of the 6 piece band's roots lurking in the shadows. Recorded at the new Audio Department Studio in Edmonton over the course of 3 months using a wide variety of analog gear, Spanish Moss And Total Loss sounds simply fantastic.

Flinch
    Friday March 16, 2012 8:00pm - 9:00pm @ Mohawk (912 Red River)

Los Angeles based beat maker Flinch, is no stranger to the EDM world. A veteran producer who has progressed effortlessly from his beginnings in drum & bass and then electro, to current endeavors into more melodic synth-based dubstep. The succession of sounds Flinch adheres to reflects a new breed of artists distinguished most by his ability to marry a massive, tear-out bassline with a melody that could serenade your grandmother, or create tracks that pair careful grit & distortion with catchy songwriting.

Sound like a group I never remember hearing who decided to imagine what would happen if they sounded like an original pop group whose members consisted of Steve Reich, Scott Walker, Peter Gabriel, Flo and Eddie and To Rococo Rot. That good.

A follow up to his 2008 release, Small-Time Machine, CWL's newest project is a synth/sample-driven record showcasing Jason's contemplative and melodic vocals while experimenting with dark and otherworldly themes of travel, distance and despondency. Three years in the making, the title is a nod to his newly adopted hometown, his fascination with exploration, observations of broken hope within the city, and of course, those who sit on top.

Inspired by his homeland of South Africa, his journey through the UK and relocation to Brooklyn, St Lucia could reference the sonics of Temper Trap, or the infectiousness of Empire of the Sun, but ultimately it is a wall of atmospherics crafted with an inordinate amount of time-consuming precision.

Lando Kal It’s quite telling that when Glasgow super label re-configured their various guises and re-launched as Numbers, their debut release was from the two members of Lazer Sword, a gargantuan solo split 12” from Lando Kal and Low Limit. Lando Kal’s personal production journey started over eight years ago, producing more sample based stuff inspired by all the Bay Area, weirdo, independent record stores he worked at (including Amoeba) before bringing in more electronics. His music is a freaked out juggernaut of electronic music, primarily experimenting with various mutations of house. Dense instrumentation, analog synth and drum machine work, complex melodies, and creeping basslines are pooled from his musical obsessions with 90's RnB, classic house, freestyle, garage, Detroit Techno, early synthesizer music, Timbaland, and… to be honest, everything in between. It’s also indebted to his experience set as an integral player in both San Francisco and New York’s underground club scenes (he was a resident at CassetteNYC with Machinedrum, Praveen and Falty DL) .A recent import to Berlin from San Francisco via New York City, Lando embodies a unique style all his own. In 2011 his mix for Sonic Router was voted #1; soulful, emotive and slightly outside the box, retaining a crucial dancefloor sensibility throughout.

Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. They've most recently released one of the most acclaimed albums of 2011, "Sepalcure", on Hotflush Recordings.

Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and SPIN all praised Palomo for his adventurous new sound, and he was tapped to perform at top festivals like South by Southwest, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch and also scored opening slots for bands ranging from Massive Attack and The Flaming Lips to Phoenix and Chromeo.

Shout Out Out Out Out
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:45am @ Friends (208 E 6th St)

Patrick Kelleher & His Cold Dead Hands
    Saturday March 17, 2012 8:00pm - 8:40pm @ Friends (208 E 6th St)

From Jim Caligiuri, The Austin Chronicle:

Music From Ireland is an arts collective set up to promote Irish talent at international conventions. Acts must first be invited to events like SXSW, then MFI steps in with support. Patrick Kelleher & His Cold Dead Hands kick things off with a dance-synth sound that brings to mind the post-New Wave mod Eighties. Golden Syrup, released last year, added a goth edge to the quintet's disco. Lisa O'Neill, a new folk firebrand, was personally invited to open and perform with David Gray on his most recent tour. Currently one of Dublin's best live acts, Squarehead is threepiece garage band with Buzzcocks-like hooks and near-Beach Boys harmonies. Critically acclaimed throughout the UK, Belfast's Cashier No. 9 is an unclassifiable pop band that's drawn comparisons to such dissimilar acts as the Stone Roses, Byrds, and Flaming Lips. The Minutes play with a bare-bones urgency that's earned them a rep as "the greatest rock & roll band in Dublin." The trio's boozy debut took heavy inspiration from Thin Lizzy. Winners of the Northern Irish Music Awards Best Live Band, Belfast's And So I Watch You From Afar are an incredibly inventive post-punk instrumental band.

From Jim Caligiuri, The Austin Chronicle:

Manchester's Dutch Uncles' debut, Cadenza, caused the press to coin "math-pop" to describe their oddly danceable tunes reminiscent of a hooky, denser Talking Heads. Clock Opera is an eclectic fourpiece led by former "pop-chop" guru Guy Connelly. The Londoner's debut, Ways To Forget, is due in April. With a deafening buzz already surrounding them, London's Django Django are a young quartet with a psychedelicized mix of familiar styles presented in a new way. Its self-titled debut was just released in the UK to roaring reviews. Maverick Sabre, aka Michael Stafford, was hailed by the BBC's Huw Stephens as "the male Amy Winehouse." The new voice in UK soul issued his first album, Lonely Are the Brave, in February. 2011's Paradise, the second effort from London's Slow Club, found the duo of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor boldly exploring new sounds while retaining their quirky bubblegum folk appeal. One of the UK's most popular dance DJs with his own show on BBC 1, Toddla T (aka Tom Bell) is more dubwise than dubstep.

Depressed Buttons
    Saturday March 17, 2012 9:00pm - 10:00pm @ Elysium (705 Red River St 78701)

Most commonly known as three-fifths of the influential indie-synth outfit, The Faint, Clark Baechle, Todd Fink, and Jacob Thiele have begun their journey into the future of sound with their new project Depressed Buttons. The men behind the drums, vox, and keyboards of the revered Faint were among the first to give punk kids a taste of keyboard-based dance music in the late 1990s -- when dancing was not cool. Now outfitted as Depressed Buttons, they will take on the electronic/dance world with an entirely new sound. With remixes for Of Montreal and Boys Noize under their belts and remixes for Boy 8-Bit and Shinichi Osawa on the way, Mad Decent signed them to release their first EP, "QWERTY," on December 7th.

The four-track EP does not digress from The Faint’s intentions to make an entire audience fill the dance floor, but Depressed Buttons does lead into a new sound of digital dance dimension. With a filthy lust for synthesizers, the band creates all of their own tracks, leaving listeners entranced and entangled within a web of angular stabs and thick pads. Don’t let the word “depressed” fool you, a button that's depressed isn't sad; it's turned on, which is exactly what "QWERTY" does to listeners.

Soft Metals
    Saturday March 17, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ The Parish (214 E Sixth St Austin, TX)

Starkey
    Saturday March 17, 2012 10:00pm - 10:40pm @ Empire Automotive ( 604—606 E 7th St, Austin TX)

PJ Geissinger aka Starkey is blessed with musical arrangement skills that would leave most composers green faced with envy. This combined with his high production ethic makes him a formidable force not only in the underground but also as a super producer of the future. Starkey is yet another example of what the streets of Philadelphia can create, his sound hits hard and is littered with bass and colourful audio frequencies. If you like grime, dubstep, hip hop and all things “street bass” then Starkey’s hard edged spaced out crunk is the sound for you.
2008 saw Starkey selected for Mary Anne Hobb’s low end special “Generation Bass”. 2 years later in 2010 he was again selected by MAH for the “Building a beat” special where he crafted a track from scratch in the space of 2hrs live on air.
Starkey is also co-owner of the Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey Record labels, releasing the freshest output from around the globe. This combined with his fortnightly radio show on Sub FM has positioned him as one of the tastemakers to emerge out of the bass heavy underground.
Starkey’s 2nd full-length album for the seminal Planet Mu label was released in April of 2010. Entitled, Ear Drums and Black Holes, it garnered rave reviews with DJ Mag giving the album a 9/10 album of the month rating and suggesting it “could be dubstep’s ‘Sgt. Pepper and the Lonely Hearts Club Band’.” NME said it was “a hell of a lot of fun” and Brainer called it a “dazzling record”.
The past year has seen Starkey releasing on Civil Music with the much lauded “Space Traitor Vols. 1 & 2”, as well as Ninja Tune with the genre-defying “Open the Pod Bay Doors” EP.

    Saturday March 17, 2012 11:00pm - 11:40pm @ Bar 96 (96 Rainey St., Austin, TX 78701)

From Greg Beets, The Austin Chronicle:

For more than 15 years, Mexico City's Intolerancia has documented the bleeding edge of progressive Latin American music. Saturday's eclectic showcase furthers that mission. Hailing from Xonacatlán, Mexico, Sonido San Francisco specializes in a techno-savvy reimagining of the traditional Latin American cumbia that combines synthesizers and accordions into fresh rhythmic bliss. Bass aficionados won't want to miss Mexico City composer Alonso Arreola, whose breakneck four-string fretwork electrifies the senses without devolving into gee-whiz thwackery. Mexico City-based prog-rock quartet Turbina bounces back and forth from start/stop paint-peelers to artful slowcore passages to psychoactive noise-pop on their ambitious three-part opus, Leti' Hum Eek' – Inda Jani – Mish Masadi. Acoustic strummer Juan Cirerol's musical background includes classical guitar and punk rock, but the Mexicali native's current sound taps elements of gritty ranch folk from both sides of the border. Medellín, Colombia's Panorama pumps a breathless mix of proto-techno and futuristic rock that's straight out of Ric Ocasek's 1979, while Bogotá, Colombia, fourpiece Planes buries its stuttering synth-folk under a pleasantly discombobulating bed of blips, bleeps, and related sundry garble.

    Saturday March 17, 2012 11:15pm - 12:00am @ The Stage On Sixth Patio (508 E 6th Street)

From Thomas Fawcett, The Austin Chronicle:

Sweet Mary mother of Marley is this showcase loaded! Nat Geo has assembled a two-headed global groove armada as formidable as any lineup at the Festival. Austin Latin funk army Brownout fires the first shot "Con el Cuete" before morphing into big band Grupo Fantasma on the patio stage. The 9pm slot poses tough choices as Chicha Libre cooks up a cocktail of psychedelic cumbia and producer Quantic joins soulstress Alice Russell to tease the lush, warm grooves of forthcoming collaboration Look Around the Corner. The pounding garage soul of UK's the Heavy (you've undoubtedly heard hit "How You Like Me Now?" on your favorite TV show) makes way for the striking voice of Nigerian war-goddess Nneka, for whom comparisons to Lauryn Hill are well-earned. Brooklyn-by-way-of-Israel electro trio Balkan Beat Box whips up a radical gypsy dance party on the patio before reggae legend Jimmy Cliff closes the evening. This lineup is as hard as they come.

Ghosts on Tape
    Sunday March 18, 2012 12:00am - 12:35am @ Barcelona (209 E 6th St)

Ryan Merry, San Francisco based DJ and producer better known as Ghosts on Tape makes what he likes to call deep rave music for tripped out weirdos. While the many strains of house and techno make up the bulk of the Ghosts On Tape aesthetic, the phantom rhythms of Afro-Cuban drums, the smack of Miami bass and King Tubby’s delay boxes have all joined the party in one form or another. Chances are if someone danced to it, it will have been caught on one of his old Yamaha samplers, ready to be unleashed in the dance: on Wireblock, Planet Mu, Shockout, Innovative Leisure and Opit, as well as via Ryan’s own ICEE HOT parties. Recently awarded membership into the Red Bull Music Academy, we should all expect big things from this guy in the years to come.

Mmoths
    Sunday March 18, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Elysium (705 Red River St 78701)
Jack Colleran doesn’t sleep, and it shows. The 18-year-old producer, who goes by the name MMOTHS, has embraced endless nights and bags beneath his eyes in exchange for something more; a uniquely ethereal sound that’s entirely his own. Disregarding genre conventions, the Ireland-based artist and producer mesmerizes with sparse synths dripping in reverb, transforming digital soundscapes into organic songs, equally fit for both a night on the town and one spent indoors in the company of candlelight. He showcases this on his 2012 self-titled debut EP for SQE Music, where no sound, vibe, or texture is off limits.
Growing up in Newbridge, Kildare, Colleran never had any illusions about what he wanted to be. Armed with his first keyboard at four-years-old, he insisted upon professional piano lessons. In high school, Colleran continued to immerse himself in music by playing in a slew of local bands, while also delving into the burgeoning experimental electronic music that the Internet afforded him access to. The moment he downloaded a demo version of Ableton Live during his final year of high school, he began obsessively creating his own tracks from scratch. There was one tiny problem though.
"The save function was disabled in my demo version of Ableton," Colleran laughs. "I never saw the progress I was making in production because I couldn't save anything and listen back to it. Once I got the full version, I made my first official track."
That track was "Blisters." In the song, a bright keyboard melody shimmers over a precise beat as skittering sounds taper in and out. International tastemaker blog Nialler9 immediately embraced "Blisters" touting MMOTHS as an "Artist to Watch". Quickly, the song spread virally across the blogosphere. As MMOTHS’ popularity continued to grow online, SQE Music got in touch in mid-2011 becoming his official home.
"I actually signed the deal the day I got my final high school grades," he goes on. "It took me a while to tell my mom but I eventually did."
Colleran had gotten used to recording all night, so he fervently began crafting the tracks that would become his debut EP under the moonlight. The subtle effects of this nocturnal writing process can be seen and heard throughout the five tracks.
He adds, "The music doesn't sound like it's coming from another planet though. It sounds natural and organic. There's no manual for writing tracks."
Songs like "Heart" break the mold. A dreamy synth line mounts as Sarah P from Keep Shelly in Athens gorgeously croons the refrain, resulting in a truly 21st century love song.
Colleran explains, "I never have a set plan. Music just happens. I'll find a cool sound and write around that. I'm not a singer-songwriter who writes about a certain event, person, or experience. I just try to write music that makes people feel something. If they feel a bit uplifted, I've done my job."
That's exactly how you'll feel after listening to the melodic warmth of "Summer" featuring Los Angeles’ Superhumanoids. About the song, he adds, "I wrote that song because the winter was coming and it can get pretty horrible over here. Summer was ending, and I wanted to keep it alive forever. This was my way to do that."
The name came about just as organically as the music for Colleran. He reveals, "Guys call girls 'Motts' over here. I was uploading my songs to Soundcloud and I didn't have an artist name. I was talking to my friend on Facebook, and he was having girl problems. He wrote, 'I hate Motts' because he just broke up with some girl. I needed a name at that moment so I called the project ‘MMOTHS’."
Ultimately, MMOTHS is going to kindle a new flame for electronic music, pushing it into lush new territory with the honesty of the young and impassioned. "This is the best job in the world," Colleran concludes. "Even if it all fails, I'm going to make music regardless."
