From Dan Oko, The Austin Chronicle:
Houston's Third Ward produced this Southern hip-hop original whose raps draw on punk and dadaist traditions. Over just a few short years, Fat Tony (born Anthony Obi to Nigerian parentage) has gone from underground rapper to nationally known collaborator with the likes of Das Racist. Austin audiences know him from appearances at Fun Fun Fun Fest, while a follow-up to his debut RABDARGAB should only broaden that appeal.

From Austin Powell, The Austin Chronicle:
Orville Bateman Neeley III leads arguably the two most thrilling punk bands in Texas at the moment: recent Maximum Rocknroll cover stars OBN III's and Bad Sports. Balanced by Mind Spiders' Daniel Fried, the latter could pass as extras from the Ramones' Rock 'n' Roll High School, with sneering punk attitude and huge pop hooks evidenced by the Denton/Austin trio's second Dirtnap LP, Kings of the Weekend.
From Chase Hoffberger, The Austin Chronicle:
A mellow electronic duo from East Vancouver that fuses analog sounds and driving beats with live vocals for a unique mix.
From Greg Beets, The Austin Chronicle:
For more than 15 years, Mexico City's Intolerancia has documented the bleeding edge of progressive Latin American music. Saturday's eclectic showcase furthers that mission. Hailing from Xonacatlán, Mexico, Sonido San Francisco specializes in a techno-savvy reimagining of the traditional Latin American cumbia that combines synthesizers and accordions into fresh rhythmic bliss. Bass aficionados won't want to miss Mexico City composer Alonso Arreola, whose breakneck four-string fretwork electrifies the senses without devolving into gee-whiz thwackery. Mexico City-based prog-rock quartet Turbina bounces back and forth from start/stop paint-peelers to artful slowcore passages to psychoactive noise-pop on their ambitious three-part opus, Leti' Hum Eek' – Inda Jani – Mish Masadi. Acoustic strummer Juan Cirerol's musical background includes classical guitar and punk rock, but the Mexicali native's current sound taps elements of gritty ranch folk from both sides of the border. Medellín, Colombia's Panorama pumps a breathless mix of proto-techno and futuristic rock that's straight out of Ric Ocasek's 1979, while Bogotá, Colombia, fourpiece Planes buries its stuttering synth-folk under a pleasantly discombobulating bed of blips, bleeps, and related sundry garble.
From Jim Caligiuri, The Austin Chronicle:
Manchester's Dutch Uncles' debut, Cadenza, caused the press to coin "math-pop" to describe their oddly danceable tunes reminiscent of a hooky, denser Talking Heads. Clock Opera is an eclectic fourpiece led by former "pop-chop" guru Guy Connelly. The Londoner's debut, Ways To Forget, is due in April. With a deafening buzz already surrounding them, London's Django Django are a young quartet with a psychedelicized mix of familiar styles presented in a new way. Its self-titled debut was just released in the UK to roaring reviews. Maverick Sabre, aka Michael Stafford, was hailed by the BBC's Huw Stephens as "the male Amy Winehouse." The new voice in UK soul issued his first album, Lonely Are the Brave, in February. 2011's Paradise, the second effort from London's Slow Club, found the duo of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor boldly exploring new sounds while retaining their quirky bubblegum folk appeal. One of the UK's most popular dance DJs with his own show on BBC 1, Toddla T (aka Tom Bell) is more dubwise than dubstep.
From Chase Hoffberger, The Austin Chronicle:
Plight of the Chinese musician: Fly 7,000 miles for South by Southwest and who do you end up sharing a showcase with? The other Chinese bands that made the trip. Welcome to Texas; enjoy the tacos. Most intriguing here is Beijing quartet Carsick Cars, SXSW 2011 veterans who tip their cap to Pavement, Velvet Underground, and Sonic Youth on MMR debut You Can Listen, You Can Talk. Similarly distorted, Rustic arrives as a surfer punk foursome with a love of hair metal. From Shanghai, Duck Fight Goose takes the torch from LCD Soundsystem and ignites the dance-rock party. Same could be said for Beijing songstress Nova Heart, the dark, layered, dance-pop side project of Helen Feng. Those looking to rev their engines should stick around for Snapline, while Deadly Cradle Death give proof that witch house has a home in the Middle Kingdom.
From Zoe Cordes Selbin, The Austin Chronicle:
Sexy soul with horn charts to die for and touches of funk.
From Jim Caligiuri, The Austin Chronicle:
Music From Ireland is an arts collective set up to promote Irish talent at international conventions. Acts must first be invited to events like SXSW, then MFI steps in with support. Patrick Kelleher & His Cold Dead Hands kick things off with a dance-synth sound that brings to mind the post-New Wave mod Eighties. Golden Syrup, released last year, added a goth edge to the quintet's disco. Lisa O'Neill, a new folk firebrand, was personally invited to open and perform with David Gray on his most recent tour. Currently one of Dublin's best live acts, Squarehead is threepiece garage band with Buzzcocks-like hooks and near-Beach Boys harmonies. Critically acclaimed throughout the UK, Belfast's Cashier No. 9 is an unclassifiable pop band that's drawn comparisons to such dissimilar acts as the Stone Roses, Byrds, and Flaming Lips. The Minutes play with a bare-bones urgency that's earned them a rep as "the greatest rock & roll band in Dublin." The trio's boozy debut took heavy inspiration from Thin Lizzy. Winners of the Northern Irish Music Awards Best Live Band, Belfast's And So I Watch You From Afar are an incredibly inventive post-punk instrumental band.
From Kevin Curtin, The Austin Chronicle:
Despite the name, the Moog's main attraction isn't analog keyboards; it's Tonyo Szabo. The Hungarian singer's accented voice puts tight, complicated, dark melodies over the band's midtempo, guitar-driven alt-rock. Upcoming LP Seasons in the Underground was produced by Ken Scott, who worked on such landmark records as Ziggy Stardust and The White Album. Early ears on the disc reveal a band that's grown out of imitating the American garage-rock revivalists and become something smoother and deeper.
From Michael Bertin, The Austin Chronicle:
Early Flaming Lips meets Black Mountain, female drummer.

From Kate X Messer, The Austin Chronicle:
Austin loves to bounce, so it's tough to imagine the phenom hitting Central Texas as firm and round as it has without the mad work of Austin ex-pat DJ Rusty Lazer – mish-masher of traditional NOLA sounds into bounce's hip-hop base and one of the fiercest ambassadors of New Orleans' original booty style – hitting the tables along with (Nola Fam's) DJ Q. Named for what it makes asses do, bounce has gained devotees through the aggressive touring of its gender-bent subgenre sissy bounce, typified by the lady notorious for shifting bounce's focus up front on her paean "Tiddy Bop," Katey Red (as well as fellow purveyors Big Freedia and the late, great Magnolia Shorty). Shorty, the bounce rapper whose life was tragically cut short in late 2010, lives on in beloved protégée Magnolia Rhome. And you know when Diplo said "Express Yourself"? Well, that expression would not be as unique without the urging of Big Freedia/Katey Red star pupil Nicky da B, also heading up this bill. The night will be firmed up with a generous taste of hot, fresh bounce, hip-hop, and dance crew up-and-comers right out of the oven, Nola Fam, Jean Eric, Rhodes!!, Nesby Phips, and LuckyLou.
From Thomas Fawcett, The Austin Chronicle:
Sweet Mary mother of Marley is this showcase loaded! Nat Geo has assembled a two-headed global groove armada as formidable as any lineup at the Festival. Austin Latin funk army Brownout fires the first shot "Con el Cuete" before morphing into big band Grupo Fantasma on the patio stage. The 9pm slot poses tough choices as Chicha Libre cooks up a cocktail of psychedelic cumbia and producer Quantic joins soulstress Alice Russell to tease the lush, warm grooves of forthcoming collaboration Look Around the Corner. The pounding garage soul of UK's the Heavy (you've undoubtedly heard hit "How You Like Me Now?" on your favorite TV show) makes way for the striking voice of Nigerian war-goddess Nneka, for whom comparisons to Lauryn Hill are well-earned. Brooklyn-by-way-of-Israel electro trio Balkan Beat Box whips up a radical gypsy dance party on the patio before reggae legend Jimmy Cliff closes the evening. This lineup is as hard as they come.

By now, every hip-hop fan – and even the NPR set – has heard of Brother Ali, a legally blind Minneapolis Muslim albino rapper who wears emotional scars like Boy Scout badges. Ali earned a loyal fan base by writing deeply personal songs and going balls-out on stage night after night. It's been three years since Ali's Us, but expect the forthcoming LP Mourning in America, Dreaming in Color.

From Kate X Messer, The Austin Chronicle:
Back in the storied Sixties, you couldn't get more dark/light dichotomous than the Velvet Underground vs. the Mamas & the Papas. Cigarette alto (with a pitch-perfect squeak) Natalie Ribbons could tackle Nico and Mama Cass, and drummer Lauren Hess definitely Moe Tuckers that thump. Perhaps the perfect gray area would be the twisted entropy of the Kennedy-Bouvier kin of Grey Gardens, which Agent Ribbons coincidentally has a song about.

From Chase Hoffberger, The Austin Chronicle:
East Cameron Folkcore played the bulk of Sound & Fury: Songs in the Key of Love and Death only once, at the Hole in the Wall last spring on the night of the album's release.
"We basically evolved past those songs as soon as we released them," says Jesse Moore, head wrangler for the 10-member ECF, composed of members of Bankrupt & the Borrowers, Bridge Farmers, the Van Buren Boys, Clyde & Clem's Whiskey Business, Hobomouth, and the Bread. "A lot of those songs weren't designed to be played live at all. We had to get them out of our system to quantify them in our own grieving."
Written in memory of Jon Pettis, Moore's Bankrupt bandmate who died in an electrical fire at the band's house in October 2009, Sound & Fury is a defining work in Moore's compositional evolution, a seamlessly articulated tribute tied into an inspiring story about a neighborhood rallying to celebrate a life. Paradoxically, its elegiac message isn't indicative of typical Folkcore shows, which run loud, rowdy, and rooted in political undertones.
"Some of the songs on Sound & Fury I recorded in my bedroom – alone," says Moore. "That was more of my own project, and I used the band to get the way it needed to sound. The songs we focused on came through as more of a collaborative effort, and a process of getting everyone's sound and all their influences into the music."
In ECF's case, getting every member's sound into the music often requires fitting upward of 30 tracks into a single song's mix. Moore points to trombonist Blake Bernstein's "Charlene," one of the songs on the band's upcoming The Sun Also Rises EP, as having 32 individual tracks.
"It's crazy," laughs Moore. "It took us two whole months to just mix this EP."
From Austin Powell, The Austin Chronicle:
Japan's greatest bar band, Electric Eel Shock, takes American rock & roll to almost absurdist extremes. The Tokyo-based power trio understands the universal power of the riff, with a caterwauling live show and two near-classic albums, 2004's Go Europe and the following year's Beat Me. For the first time since 2006, EES finally returns to the states on the strength of the romping Live Around the World Vol. 1.
From Kate X Messer, The Austin Chronicle:
Its unfairly panned sophomore album, La La Land, was a brilliant slab misread by kiddie critics. For every goofball pinning unrealistic Grizzly Bear comparisons onto this Montreal trio, there are 10 adults who'd dig the Seventies production and commentary on American excess that would make Jay Ferguson (from his days in Spirit, through his delightful Top 40 cheese) proud. Canadians are often more subtle than your average bear.
From Doug Freeman, The Austin Chronicle:
Over the course of three albums, the Strange Boys have perfected languid, drawling, garage R&B, plying an insouciant slacker charm that belies the tightness of the Austin quartet's arrangements. Last year's Rough Trade debut, Live Music, aided in part by Jim Eno's production, delivers a mellower pace to Ryan Sambol's rusty, slurred moans but to the advantage of also pushing his yearning pop lyricism more to the surface.
Catch Digitalism at the Scion's Super Party!
Colours, the debut album from Britain’s Graffiti6, is as vividly vibrant as both the project’s moniker and its album title suggest: an uncategorizable mélange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British Northern Soul that fully capitalizes on the soaring uplift of Jamie Scott’s emotionally transparent voice and gift for melody and TommyD’s irresistible rhythms and inventive production. Songs like “Stone In My Heart,” “Stare Into The Sun,” “Annie You Save Me,” and “Free” are “latter-day psych-soul nuggets, all phased vocals and sunshine melodies given the warp factor,” as London’s Guardian newspaper put it, while the remainder of Colours zigzags all over the musical map from the folk-soul balladry of “Goodbye Geoffrey Drake,” to the spare, gospel-inflected feel of “Over You,” to the downtempo sultriness of “Calm The Storm,” to the jangly indie-rock vibe of “Lay Me Down.” “For me, the unexpectedness of the sound is the whole point,” Scott says. “It’s fun to mess with people’s heads.”
Be sure to catch Jim-E Stack at the Scion's Super Party!
From Kevin Curtin, The Austin Chronicle:
GZA is often celebrated as the most intellectual member of the Wu-Tang Clan. That's why he's called "the Genius." He's responsible for one of hip-hop's paramount albums, 1995 solo release Liquid Swords. Rumored to have a new album coming down the pipe, GZA might just drop some unheard rhymes. For hip-hop fans sick of party rap and one-liners, we recommend going back to this metaphorical master.
Don't miss The LaRues set at Hole in the Wall!
From Abby Johnston, The Austin Chronicle:
One-upping the mouse head by wearing a native ceremonial mask, obscure British DJ Aaron Jerome blew up in the UK via last summer's self-titled debut and now storms America.
From Kate X Messer, The Austin Chronicle:

One of Austin's most iconic restaurants, Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill, will host the first Formula 1 2012 season watch party, Texas style!
In 1989, the first Z’Tejas was born in an old Victorian house on Austin’s historic 6th Street. We'll enjoy the Australian Grand Prix from the private event house, complete with two levels and expansive outdoor patio space, so let's hope for that incredible Austin weather!
The menu, largely influenced by the South, signifies the bold robust flavors of Arizona, California, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas. Enjoy the complimentary Z'Tejas Brunch Buffet complete with fresh and flavorful items. There will be a cash bar for you to enjoy their brunch cocktails - Bloody Marys, mimosas and screwdrivers - or purchase soft drinks. We are also crafting up interactive drink specials - so bring your mixology skills!

SXSW 2011 was phenomenal for Paper Garden & The Lovely Hearts Club. This year, we are going even bigger and better – setting up a Paper Garden fort for 4 full days. Showcasing 30+ bands over the first 3 days (3/14, 3/15, 3/16) and a featuring unique solar-panel sound installation called Sun Boxes & more surprises TBA on our recovery/hangover day (3/18), we have established a solid week of events featuring extraordinary talent from across the world. On top of the diverse and exciting group of bands that Paper Garden is bringing in directly, we are also partnering with three of our favorite music blogs for each day (Pigeons & Planes, My Old Kentucky Blog, The Wild Honey Pie) to co-curate some of today’s most buzz-worthy acts across all genres.
In addition to the musical talent, we have partnered up with some amazing sponsors this year. Moniker Guitars will be present again this year, giving away some custom guitar-related goodies, Thinglink will be demonstrating the launch of their new Facebook Tabs (check out an example HERE), Threads For Thought will be doing a raffle/giveaway of their sustainable and environmentally friendly clothing, Ralph & Charlies is hooking us up with some delicious AND healthy juices and to hydrate everyone even further in the heat of Austin, Vitamin Water will be supplying product throughout the week. The Deli Mag will also be present with their SXSW-special print mag.
All events are FREE and open to the public – just RSVP via the link below:
Stay tuned for finalized details on set times, drink specials, giveaways, and more!
