Charlie Simpson
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:25am @ Deseo Centro Lounge (219 Congress Ave)

At 26 years, Charlie has already spent almost half his life as a professional songwriter and frontman. Starting out as a beleaguered punk-pop heartthrob in multi-platinum act Busted, he broke free of the major label shackles to form a new band, Fightstar, more suited to his taste for alternative, post-hardcore and metal infused rock. 5 years later, after their third album hit the UK indie chart at #1 and the band had headlined a sold out 2,000 capacity show at London's Shepherds Bush Empire, the band went on a hiatus. “We couldn’t write another Fightstar record,” reveals Charlie of the time. “We’d burned ourselves out. We’d done three records in a row." This provided an opportunity to focus on a solo project; Charlie’s love for acoustic based sonics has always run alongside his interest in harder and heavier sounds. “When I was getting into metal when I was younger, bands like the Deftones and Sepultura, I also had a massive passion for singer songwriters like Jeff Buckley and Jackson Browne”. Enlisting producer Danton Supple (Coldplay) Charlie went into the studio in summer 2010 with material already written and demo'd. The first single 'Down Down Down' was released in April 2011 and was immediately picked up by BBC Radio 1 as 'Record Of The Week'. As the campaign gathered steam, much of the british media came out to support Charlie and his new sound, with multiple national TV and Radio performances, and features running in broadsheets (Guardian) and tabloid (Daily Star) newspapers alike. Online, the enthusiasm for his solo effort was palpable- his YouTube channel has reached over a million views. The album 'Young Pilgrim' was released in August 2011 and debuted at #6 on the UK chart, a triumph for an independent artist. The intimate feel and vintage warmth of the songs have also garnered numerous sync opportunities including Channel 4 hit TV show 'Made In Chelsea' and ABC's 'Cougar Town'. Charlie is currently touring the album at sold out venues across the UK and preparing for release in Germany and abroad.

Lead by vocalist and songwriter Xavier Paradis (who has long garnered a cult underground following with his solo minimal synth project ARNAUD LAZLAUD, active in Canada since the late 90's), Automelodi was formed in 2006 and is now part of the international wing of the Wierd Records community in Brooklyn. Like labelmates Led Er Est and Frank (Just Frank), Automelodi combines guitars with synthesizers and drum machines to create a truly idiosyncratic, sophisticated, and elegant form of modern minimal electronic music.

Ben von Wildenhaus
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Hideout (617 Congress Ave)

Benjamin von Wildenhaus. Name sounds like a turn-of-the-century Prussian duke or peddler of curios, snakeoil and ersatz jewelry. Maybe not such a bad set of images to start by thinking about, rather than all his influences or whatever. Ben Wildenhaus is a guitar player, pianist and all-‘round musical dude, on par with modern guys like Alan Bishop and older ones like Sandy Bull. All three were drawn to the vast space, windblown grit and non-Western twang of desert guitar/oud music. None went the tacky world [sic] music route, Allah etc. be praised. All three instead took gracefully and intuitively to the music’s deeper structure—hazy or unmarked beginnings and endings, subtle dynamic rise and ebb, and unhurried play—and adapted it into their own idiom. They’ve given us ambitious wandering soundscapes, suitable for salt trading by caravan, qat chewing in humid cafés, and walking to work with your headphones on.

    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Buffalo Billiards (201 E 6th St)
Elizabeth Harper, a former drama major from Los Angeles, had been writing delicate, wistful songs of longing and detachment for several years when she met musician & psychoanalyst-in-training Mark Richardson in 2009 and asked him to remix one of her tracks. Their creative chemistry was instantaneous – Mark’s production style was cerebral but sensual, relying heavily on vintage synths and drum machines, and influenced by ‘80s bands like Human League and Depeche Mode while still conscious of modern club sounds steeped in hip hop and house. It perfectly complemented the melancholy undertone in Harper’s songs and revealed in them an urge towards ecstatic abandon.

Holy Grail
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Valhalla (710 Red River St)
When it comes to ripping young metal bands, few—perhaps none—rip harder than HOLY GRAIL. Formed in Southern California in 2008 when vocalist James Paul Luna and drummer Tyler Meahl escaped from Pasadena metal squadron White Wizzard and teamed up with San Diegan guitar hero Eli Santana, the band was called Sorcerer until it became clear that the moniker didn’t quite capture the rarefied nature of the members’ collective talents. So Sorcerer became HOLY GRAIL. And HOLY GRAIL became so unstoppable that California just couldn’t contain them. And now, like their spiritual forefathers in Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio, HOLY GRAIL are poised to bring their hook-laden shred anthems to an arena near you.

Howler
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto)

Based in Minneapolis, Howler are Jordan Gatesmith (vocals / guitar), Ian Nygaard (guitar), France Camp (bass), Max Petrek (keyboard) and Brent Mayes (drums). What started as a side project for Jordan Gatesmith in 2010, quickly took off, catching the ear of the NME, which led to Rough Trade signing them up for a worldwide deal. The band are a straight forward rock band, in the tradition of the Modern Lovers but have a "surf thrash" edge that reminds one of the Cramps at times. Barely 19 years old, Jordan has already wrapped up his first US tour, and is currently in the studio finishing the full-length, and will be supporting The Vaccines' full UK tour in november.

Stevie Moore was born 1952 in Nashville TN to famed Elvis bass player Bob. Roger Wallace
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The White Horse (500 Comal St, Austin, TX 78702)
Roger Wallace has something rare in country music today: honesty, creativity, and more than enough talent to back it all up. You could say it's all in the voice -- and not just the powerful, rangy singing voice that has gained acclaim in roots-country circles for almost a decade. That voice attempts to speak not only in notes and words, but in a distinct musical vision, as well as unique views on the world around him. His most recent CD, aptly titled It's About Time, includes 12 of the 13 songs written or co-written by Wallace, as well as a more stripped-down musical approach from his previous three CD's (Hillbilly Heights-1999, That Kind Of Lonely-2001, The Lowdown-2002) that exposes the most basic elements of country music, from its purest tones to its barest bones.

Always striving for original, innovative melodies SPEAK garnered noteworthy attention with their 2010 debut EP, Hear Here and received overwhelming industry praise. Austin Chronicle asserted they are “poised to change the musical landscape” and gave the quartet 4 stars, the publication’s highest rating, while The A.V. Club declared it “smooth electronic seduction, spiked with a little venom.” Their powerhouse synth-rock-pop anthems and infectious melodies have earned them honors like “Best New Band” at Austin Music Awards where they were presented the award by the Talking Heads.
I Believe In Everything was produced by the sought-after Chris “Frenchie” Smith (JET, Dandy Warhols). The 11-song set features the smash hit “Carrie” which you can download at www.hearspeakhere.com. The song is also available for purchase at iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/carrie-single/id445168769.
SPEAK’s frontman, Troupe Gammage, has been recording music since age 11, and has always been entranced by the compositions within his favorite video games. Releasing his first EP at 16, he subsequently released two online albums and, to date, has received over 25,000 downloads. Thereafter, he began creating music on rudimentary computer software and later founded his own production company geared towards gaming for PlayStation, Xbox, Wii and PC.
Never losing his love of music, he was introduced to fellow bandmates Nick Hurt (guitar), Joey Delahoussaye (bass) and Jake Stewart (drums) through mutual friends in 2008 and soon after formed SPEAK

Talking To Turtles
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ St David's Bethell Hall (301 E 8th St)

„The American Recording“ – what is kind of the title of this text was my
suggestion for the album title as well, because I think it’s a brilliant one
which really fits to the music on one hand and as the album was recorded in
the US it totally would have made sense to me, not taking it too seriously! If
you don’t like this title happy you, because the band feels the same and
didn’t want to put too much meaning in the fact that this piece has been
recorded overseas, which I’m kind of doing now anyway...
„Oh, The Good Life“ is what its called now and the second album after
highly acclaimed debut „Monologue“ (2010) of mixed German duo TALKING
TO TURTLES which has been recorded in Seattle (!) by Jonathan Warman,
who is being descrbied as kind of an upcoming jewel of fame to come. Parts
of the album were recorded at legendary Avast! Studios, where bands like
Soundgarden, Death Cab For Cutie, The Shins and Band Of Horses recorded
their great works as well, other parts at Warmans loft. The mixing was done
by good friend Eric Corson, who also is the bass player in The Long Winters,
and mastered in Omaha by Doug van Sloun (Bright Eyes, The Faint, Cursive,
    Azure Ray).
So, enough with name dropping and USA and of course TALKING TO
TURTLES still is TALKING TO TURTLES and so „Oh, The Good Life“ is as
beautiful and weird as the debut „Monologue“. It’s again containing 10 songs,
but what is different besides the sound is the range of the songs as you can
    hear.
As I don’t want to make this text a „monologue“ I asked Claudia & Florian,
the Turtles, to write their point of view as well:
„The next record will be recorded in Seattle!“ What a big laugh it was as our label friend
Jörg Tresp confronted us with this plan. A big laugh half about his megalomania and half
about us in the US where we’ve never been before.
Half a year later we saw ourselves in Seattle with a producer named Jonathan Warman,
in an impressing studio called Avast!, to record our first takes of our second album „Oh,
The Good Life“. Everything ok as long as studio owner Steward named some of the
bands who recorded there and as we left the studio we were kind of relieved. Also was
good to record some of the stuff at Jonathan’s loft to come down and this felt a little like
    we recorded our debut.
Seeing the recording developing more and more we had some friends of Jonathan
coming in who seemed to play every instrument you can think of like cello, double bass,
transverse flute, french horn, banjo, etc. – unbelievable! They were able to transcribe all
ideas quick and with a lot of feelings as they’ve heard our songs for years.

The Drums
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Stubb's (801 Red River St)

Emerging from Brooklyn via Florida in 2009, The Drums initially caught the ear of the indie world with their Summertime! EP. It was an escapist collection of beach pop fantasies; tracks suffused with a wistful, longing nostalgia that never pandered to cheap sentimentality. Their rise, particularly in the UK, was meteoric. Early buzz led to a prestigious spot on the BBC Sound of 2010 shortlist, followed in short succession by a slot on the Shockwaves NME Tour in 2009, and the publication’s Phillip Hall Radar Award in early 2010, well before the album’s release that summer.

The Early November
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Palm Door (401 Sabine Street, Austin, Texas 78701)

The members of the Early November were young enough to have grown up with the Drive-Thru Records sound, a formula that incorporated sensitive emo, pop, and punk revivalist amalgams with a bit of post-hardcore grit. The band first emerged in 2000, fighting to secure shows in their busy South Jersey scene while hoping to land a deal with Drive-Thru. One way or another, their wish came true. Label figureheads Richard and Stefanie Reines signed vocalist/guitarist "Ace" (Arthur) Enders, bassist Sergio Anello, drummer Jeff Kummer, and guitarist Joseph Marro in early 2002 on the strengths of their demo and a solid MP3.com buzz, and by November 2002 the band had made its label debut with the For All of This EP. Promising appearances on the Warped Tour's Drive-Thru stage that summer spread the word, and by 2003, anticipation for an Early November full-length was brimming.

From Dan Oko, The Austin Chronicle:

As the anniversary of Japan's devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami passes, the Pacific island nation's riveting, rocking musical community makes its mark at the annual Japan Nite showcase, beginning with fashion-forward Yokohama-based Rubies, a high-energy pop quartet featuring ex-members of the theatrical Emeralds (a SXSW presence from 2004 to 2008). Also arriving on the bill is the eagerly anticipated 24-year-old banjo phenom Saito Johnny, whose String Cheese Incident/Wasabi Highway sound won his Tokyo bluegrass band an opening slot on Taylor Swift's Far East tour. As usual, you can never count out Japan's latter-day riot grrrls, who follow in Shonen Knife's subversive steps. Lovely ladies include Tokyo's cheeky goth trio Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass, and ZZZ's, a driving, droning post-punk trio from the North Coast community Hyogo (it played in a previous incarnation last year as Hystoic Vein). The remaining bands include Kao=S and Osaka's Nokies! and Vampillia, respectively a grab bag of chaotic acoustic sounds and sword dancing, post-punk pop, and Nipponese nu-metal.

Now, with the release of their third full-length record Come Back as Rain (out March 6th, 2012 on Sargent House), the Philadelphia- based band harnesses the high-spirited simplicity that makes their shows so unforgettable. Like Only Way To Be Alone (Good Old War’s 2008 debut) and their 2010 self-titled sophomore effort, Come Back as Rain showcases the delicately textured melodies and multipart harmonies that have become the band’s signature. Once again revealing their penchant for infectious folk-pop, Good Old War this time sharpens their sound by infusing Come Back as Rain with the same joyful passion they’ve ceaselessly brought to the stage.

Breakage
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 1:00am @ Mohawk (912 Red River)
Breakage aka James Boyle is never been one to be pigeonholed. Moving effortlessly through styles from drum and bass to dubstep, Breakage has proved himself to be one of the most versatile operators in either scene to date. A prodigious talent, he already has a number of classic releases under his belt but continues to develop his sound. Combining rich tones and a sense of spaciousness in the mix, Breakage’s music is both subtle yet devastatingly effective.
Never afraid to make an impact, he burst onto the drum and bass scene back in 2000, announcing his arrival with a raucous remix of a hardcore classic, Nasty Habit’s ‘Here Come the Drums’ on Reinforced. He backed up this bold move, however, with a series of EPs for the legendary label proving he was no young pretender. Breakage was at the forefront of a new wave of breakbeat scientists bringing a percussive sound back to drum and bass at a time when the scene seemed to have forgotten it’s jungle roots.
Breakage continued his good form dropping a number of sort after releases for the Inperspective label, his remix of Equinox’s ‘Acid Rain’ twisted the Amen break to new levels and served as a rallying call for producers looking to bring back the original drum and bass sound. Further releases came on labels including Critical and Scientific Wax, before his debut album release in 2006 ‘This To Shall Pass’ gained wide spread critical acclaim and included some slower tempo material, hinting at what was to come.
James signed with Shy FX’s mighty Digital Soundboy imprint in 2007, and soon turned heads with the haunting half- time beats of ‘Clarendon b/w Shroud.’ It came as no surprise that he would make waves in the dubstep community with his next release, ‘Callahan b/w Untitled,’ after having remixed one of the scene’s biggest tracks to date, Benga & Coki’s ‘Night,’ alongside Shy FX as Digital Soundboy.
2009 saw Breakage cemented himself as a main player across the British dance music press and taste- making elite. Following on from the superb ‘Together’, Breakage released ‘Run Em Out’ feat. Roots Manuva b/w ‘Higher’ followed by the thuggish reworked ‘Hard’ feat. Newham Generals and David Rodigan, which has gone on be become a underground anthem with Zane Lowe naming it his ‘Hottest Record In The World’ on his Radio 1 show.
His sophomore LP ‘Foundation’ was released in March 2010 on Digital Soundboy, featuring Skream, Burial, Roots Manuva, David Rodigan, Newham Generals, Donae'o and more. The album has been a tremendous success across the dubstep/d&b scenes as well as widespread mainstream acclaim. IDJ, DJ MAG, NME & Mixmag all named the record 'Album Of The Month' and it supporters included the likes of Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, Laurent Garnier and Benga.
Alongside his original recordings James has also recently turned in remixes for the likes of Massive Attack, Florence & The Machine, Plan B, Magnetic Man, Underworld, Claire Maguire, Sidney Sampson, David Guetta, Aswad, Devlin and Melanie Fiona.
To quote a certain Mr. Roots Manuva... “Breakage is a man with an ear for deep, deep, sub-sonic frequencies. He goes in low. I thinking he’s talking to sea-life. He’s talking to the squid”.
2011 see’s Breakage up the levels once again. His new single ‘Fighting Fire’ features new Island Records signee and Leftfield vocalist Jess Mills and is already causing serious damage across dance-floors and airwaves worldwide. Zane Lowe named it his ‘Hottest Record In The World’ again (Its James 6th Hottest Record in the last year!), and further support has come from Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Mista Jam, Rob Da Bank and even Vernon Kay. Fighting Fire is Jame’s first offering from his forthcoming 3rd studio album. 2011 also see’s James embark on various productions for other artists and a relentless DJ schedule taking his across the globe.

SMALL STONE RECORDS ANNOUNCES SXSW SHOWCASE LINE-UP

Detroit label will feature seven of heavy rock’s best at Headhunters in Austin, TX, on Friday, March 16, 2012

DETROIT, MI, January, 18, 2012 — Now entering its 17th year of operation, Small Stone Records has announced the final lineup for its 2012 SXSW showcase, set to take place Friday, March 16, on the outside back patio at Headhunters on Red River in Austin, TX. The label, home to the best in heavy and ‘70s-fueled motor rock, has assembled a roster of new and old blood for a night that’s sure to remind Austin why it loves volume so much in the first place.

Says label honcho Scott Hamilton, “We are very much looking forward to our yearly showcase in Austin. We have a great lineup that we’ll stuff into Headhunters, which is also one of our favorite little watering holes on Red River. It is always nice to tilt some back with some old friends, and some new ones too! Save the date, Friday March 16th!”

Spanning genres from the fuzz-drenched psychedelic improv jams of Austin natives Tia Carrera, who will close out the night, to the crunchy, noise-driven blues of New Orleans trio Suplecs, Small Stone’s showcase is an annual high point of South by Southwest for those who manage to remember it the next morning. The complete lineup is as follows:

Lando Kal
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:00am - 1:00am @ Barcelona (209 E 6th St)

Lando Kal It’s quite telling that when Glasgow super label re-configured their various guises and re-launched as Numbers, their debut release was from the two members of Lazer Sword, a gargantuan solo split 12” from Lando Kal and Low Limit. Lando Kal’s personal production journey started over eight years ago, producing more sample based stuff inspired by all the Bay Area, weirdo, independent record stores he worked at (including Amoeba) before bringing in more electronics. His music is a freaked out juggernaut of electronic music, primarily experimenting with various mutations of house. Dense instrumentation, analog synth and drum machine work, complex melodies, and creeping basslines are pooled from his musical obsessions with 90's RnB, classic house, freestyle, garage, Detroit Techno, early synthesizer music, Timbaland, and… to be honest, everything in between. It’s also indebted to his experience set as an integral player in both San Francisco and New York’s underground club scenes (he was a resident at CassetteNYC with Machinedrum, Praveen and Falty DL) .A recent import to Berlin from San Francisco via New York City, Lando embodies a unique style all his own. In 2011 his mix for Sonic Router was voted #1; soulful, emotive and slightly outside the box, retaining a crucial dancefloor sensibility throughout.

He has since performed at the New York Comic-Con (A dream come true), was nominated for the Emerging Comic Award at the 2009 ECNY Awards, and was featured in Time Out New York. Zechs Marquise
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:05am - 12:45am @ The Bat Bar (218 E 6th St)

Zechs Marquise, the El Paso, TX quintet are back with their sophomore album Getting Paid, bringing an intensified swagger to the band's multifaceted psych-prog haze for their most aggressive and versatile effort to date. "We liked that hip-hop attitude," explains drummer Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez of the album title. "Getting your piece, taking yours." And, Getting Paid certainly finds the band fully taking charge of their musical destiny.

In the years since their auspicious 2009 debut Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare, Zechs Marquise toured extensively throughout the U.S., proving to be a formidable live act supporting Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group and RX Bandits as well as leading their own headlining tours. Zechs Marquise have also grown considerably in other ways. Recent addition Rikardo Rodriguez-Lopez on keyboards and trumpet joins his brothers, drummer Marcel and bassist Marfred alongside guitarists Matthew Wilkson and Marcos Smith contributing to the band's expanded sound. Not only have they reached new plateaus of entrancing riffs and rhythms, but Getting Paid also integrates vocals on select songs, including guest performances by vocalist/guitarist Matthew Embree (RX Bandits, The Sound Of Animals Fighting) and El Paso singer Sonny Baker.

The album was entirely produced and engineered by Marcel. "We started off recording percussion to sequencers and loops," he explains. "I chopped those sounds up and arranged them. From there, were wrote the album with each of us coming in and playing on top of it. Kind of like a hip-hop song." Considering the hectic tour schedules of both Zechs Marquise and The Mars Volta (in which Marcel plays keyboards and percussion), the band was forced to work on the album over an extended period of time in between both band's tours. "It gave us a lot of time to get perspective on the songs," Marfred says. "We're really happy with and proud of this record."

Once all parts were composed using the studio as a tool, the band re-recorded the album live. "We wanted something to represent our live energy," says Marfred.

"The album cover is a play on Blacksploitation soundtrack art and stuff like (Miles Davis') Bitches Brew cover," Marfred explains. "We wanted our own weird take on it." Likewise, Getting Paid is throughout a wickedly wild take on elder forms of free jazz, skronk excursions, proto-funk and psychedelia with assertive tones and rhythms.

Zechs Marquise formed in El Paso in the spring of 2003, taking its name from a popular Japanese anime character. In June 2006 the band released 34:26, a live improvised set culled from their frequent west coast tours. The group's first proper full length Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare was produced and recorded by the band throughout 2008. In May 2009, Zechs Marquise signed on to the management roster at Sargent House and released Our Delicate Stranded Nightmare on LP/CD/digital in August of that year through Rodriguez Lopez Productions.

Sepalcure’s combination of love for bass and 90s house acapellas is the culmination of a cathartic two week collaboration between Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Praveen & Benoît). Their mix of tribal dub, house and two step beats works equally well for both late nights in the club and rainy, introspective nights at home. Detroit techno chords cut through wooden beats, neon synths and dubbed out atmospherics. They've most recently released one of the most acclaimed albums of 2011, "Sepalcure", on Hotflush Recordings.

Ola Podrida
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:15am - 12:55am @ Lamberts (401 W 2nd St)

From Austin Powell, The Austin Chronicle:

Among the most underrated labels in indie rock, Austin's Western Vinyl helped establish the Dirty Projectors, Here We Go Magic, and J. Tillman, the latter showcasing for Sub Pop this year as Father John Misty. Better known as a soundtrack composer having worked for David Gordon Green among others, David Wingo takes a similarly narrative approach with Old Podrida, his compelling and increasingly electric indie folk project. Expect a new album later this year. Weatherford's Botany is a one-man sound sculptor creating organic instrumental collages, haunting and ethereal. Lower Dens guitarist Carter Tanton released his long-awaited solo bow last year, a prismatic collection of Californian psych-pop that deserves a closer listen. Headliner Lushlife offers a rewarding change of pace. The rapper and bedroom composer born Raj Haldar melds fractured, Roc-A-Fella-esque beats with Philadelphia soul and lo-fi production into a provocative strain of avant-hip-hop on his late 2011 cassette/digital mixtape No More Golden Days. His proper label debut, Plateau Vision, bolsters his crossover appeal with contributions from Heems of Das Racist, Titus Andronicus' Andrew Cedermark, and Memphis rapper Cities Aviv.

One year in a dog’s life equals seven for a human. Dog years are a lot like touring musician years: Being on the road and learning from more seasoned bands, playing music every night, traveling together every day, a lot of growth happens at super-human speed. “For a fulltime musician, a year is a long time; one album is a huge difference. We love that album [Desolation of Eden, Chelsea Grin’s debut] but like any musician, old stuff is old stuff, when you get better you want to write different things,” Chelsea Grin bassist David Flinn says, revealing, “We all sat down and talked about what we wanted the new album to be—we wanted it to include ideas that date back to our EP but open up to things we listen to now like Thrice, Black Dahlia Murder, and indie rock. We didn’t want to put out the typical deathcore album. “

Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman (Occupy SXSW Show)
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:30am - 1:45am @ Swan Dive (615 Red River St)

From Michael Toland, The Austin Chronicle:

Jail Guitar Doors' mission is both simple (donating musical instruments to prisoners) and complex (hoping those instruments will help in those prisoners' rehabilitation). The South by Southwest edition begins with Magic Wands, an androgynous, slinky Nashville, Tenn., duo whose sexy psychedelia finds the sweet spot between the Raveonettes and Tom Tom Club. Power trio Beware of Darkness hail from Los Angeles and have been likened to a cross between Led Zeppelin and David Bowie's Hunky Dory with a literary bent. North Carolina's Flagship revolves around the dramatic keen of Drake Margolnick, who leads his band to howl, seethe, or soothe. Local garage-rock ensemble and veteran JGD supporters English Teeth is joined here by Ryan Bingham bassist-turned-singer Elijah Ford and underrated Americana rebel Otis Gibbs. Wayne Kramer, JGD co-founder and rock & roll legend, never fails to kick out the jams, motherfucker, and never more so than in support of a righteous cause. Taking a break from the Rage Against the Machine reunion, Tom Morello, aka the Nightwatchman, brings his postmodern protest songs to the headline slot.

Dinosaur Jr. is widely recognized as one of the most significant American rock bands of all time. Preceding Nirvana by several years, Dinosaur Jr. was instrumental in bringing the crashing sounds of lead guitar back to indie rock. It wasn't just the band’s signature metallic haze that made an impression on listeners; front man J Mascis’ effects-laden guitars were wrapped around some of the best songwriting of the decade. The first three albums, Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug, are now considered cult masterpieces.

    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:50am - 1:40am @ Victorian Room at The Driskill (604 Brazos St)

From Dan Oko, The Austin Chronicle:

Tying into Saturday's 2pm panel at the Austin Convention Center, Bass Culture offers acknowledgment of generations of rebellious Britons having saluted the red, gold, and green. As Third Wave reggae has blown up internationally, its offshoots – dubstep, grime, jungle, et al. – have also emerged a dominant force in mainstream English culture. Supported by Arts Council England, up-and-comers and legends start with rootsy Rasites, playing originals to make Steel Pulse proud. On the strength of his soulful, genre-bending 2008 reggae reboot Man Like I (Atlantic) silky-voiced Natty, son of a South African mother and Anglo-Italian father, has toured with Adele and Ziggy Marley. The showcase will not be all rebel stances and smoking spliffs, though the latter couldn't hurt when it comes to Little Roy. In 1965, Roy first sang at Studio One in Kingston. Forty-seven years later, his still-strong pipes lend voice to Nirvana cover album Battle for Seattle (Ark Recordings). Mixtape MC Lady Leshurr, sometimes called the female Busta Rhymes, spits like the Streets and arrives to break up the pickle party. DJ Kenny Ken is also of the moment.

San Antonio’s Girl In A Coma have left a permanent tattoo on the hearts of music lovers with their piercing songs and nuclear performances. They’ve blazed a singular trail since Nina Diaz joined the band at age 13 and have found champions and comrades along the way including Joan Jett who signed them, Morrissey, Sia, Tegan and Sara, The Pogues and Amanda Palmer who have hand selected them for tours. In addition, Robert Rodriguez asked them to compose one of the key songs for his film Machete last year. All the while, they have been building one of the most impassioned and diverse fan bases in music. Girl in a Coma are that rare feral band, unaffected by trends, that has managed to stay wild and thrill us at every turn.

    Lost in the Trees
A Church That Fits Our Needs
    Release Date: March 20, 2012

Lush  clusters  of  piano,  a  mysterious  sound  that  might  be  something  being  unwrapped,  or  paper  crushed  for  kindling,  and  A  Church  That  Fits  Our Needs,  the  second  album  by  North  Carolina  group  LOST  IN  THE  TREES,  is  underway,  announcing  itself  as  a  work  of  vaulting  ambition,  a  cathedral built on loss and transformation.  In the summer of 2009 Ari Picker – writer,
composer,  and  architect  of  the  band  –  lost  his  mother,  an  artist  in  her  own
right,  when  she  took  her  own  life.    Picker  was  in  the  midst  of  releasing  his  band’s  debut  album,  All  Alone  in  an  Empty  House,  a
collection  of  folk‐inflected  songs  that  surprised  with  its  orchestral  arrangements,  to  an  acclaim  usually  reserved  for  seasoned
veterans:  “both  heart  wrenching  and  beautiful,”  said  Paste,  while  the  Huffington  Post  called  the  album  “spellbinding  in  its  musical
ambition,  touching  in  its  intimacy,  and  often  overwhelming  in  its  emotional  honesty.”    Picker  took  the  loss  of  his  mother  and  set
about transforming the events into a tribute, composing, writing lyrics, his mother’s picture above his writing desk: the same picture
that  now  graces  the  album’s  cover.    “I  wanted  to  give  her  a  space,  in  the  music,  to  be,  and  to  become  all  the  things  she  didn’t  get  a  chance to be when she was alive.”

Shout Out Out Out Out
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:45am @ Friends (208 E 6th St)

Spanish Moss And Total Loss, Shout Out Out Out Out's third full length album since forming in 2004, is their most melodic, textured, and interesting record to date. The new album shows Shout Out Out Out Out growing as songwriters, with a strong melodic focus, and an expanded base of instrumentation. Their vast collection of analog synths has grown, and features very heavily, alongside saxophone, Rhodes piano, baritone guitar, and of course their signature double drummers, and vocoder laden vocals. The new album features a wider variety of tempos and feels than Shout Out Out Out Out's acclaimed previous two albums, while still maintaining the dancefloor filling energy they are known for. The influence of Disco, classic House, Krautrock and cosmic synth music are all present, with a hint of the punk background and ethic of the 6 piece band's roots lurking in the shadows. Recorded at the new Audio Department Studio in Edmonton over the course of 3 months using a wide variety of analog gear, Spanish Moss And Total Loss sounds simply fantastic.

Cloud Nothings
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ ND (501 N IH 35)

In 2009, Cleveland’s Dylan Baldi began writing and recording lo-fi power-pop songs in his parents’ basement, dubbing the project Cloud Nothings. His music quickly started making the Internet rounds, and fans and critics alike took note of his pithy songcraft, infectiously catchy melodies, and youthful enthusiasm. Baldi soon released a string of 7”s, a split cassette, and an EP before putting out Turning On—a compilation spanning about a year’s worth of work—on Carpark in 2010. January 2011 saw the release Cloud Nothings’ self-titled debut LP, which, put next to Turning On, found Baldi cleaning up his lo-fi aesthetic, pairing his tales of affinitive confusion with a more pristine aural clarity. In the interval since the release of Cloud Nothings, Baldi has toured widely and put a great deal of focus on his live show, a detail that heavily shapes the music of his follow-up album, Attack on Memory.

Cymbals Eat Guitars
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Studio by HGTV (304 W 4th St)

Cymbals Eat Guitars released their debut album Why There Are Mountains in 2009, receiving a response that far exceeded the band’s expectations. Two years have gone by since that early hype cycle began, and a lot has changed. Half of the musicians that played on Why There Are Mountains came and went before major touring began, replaced by Brian Hamilton on keys and Matthew Whipple on bass. Hamilton and Whipple joined singer/songwriter/guitarist Joseph D’Agostino and drummer Matt Miller
to take the show on the road, finally solidifying the lineup. An official release of Why There Are Mountains on the band’s own imprint, extensive US touring with the likes of Bear in Heaven, Los Campesinos!, and The Thermals; European dates with The Flaming Lips and The Hold Steady; and festival performances including Lollapalooza and Glastonbury kept the band quite busy. All the while, they were using whatever free time was afforded to them to write songs for a planned follow-up.

    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Loft (215 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Boiling up from the independent musical cauldron Hotlanta has become, here comes Gringo Star with its follow up to 2008's critically acclaimed debut,  “All Y’all.  The band now comes into its own with “Count Yer Lucky Stars, ” a collection of catchy and instantly classic pop music.  You won’t be able to stop humming this spate of new and bright tunes, music that lifts the spirit.  In this Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley, Deerhunter) produced record, the surge of primordial forces that reveals itself through rock and roll only about every other generation has infected these multi-instrumentalists and the result is an upbeat album of raw energy and positivity.  Live, if you can resist the urge to dance, you’ll find your limbs shaking and your toes tapping to a band which has been described as "explosive," "electrifying," and "exceptional."  No need for the devices of the main stream musical glitterati who hide lifeless melodies and meaningless lyrics in stage productions and synchronized dancing meant to distract their wide eyed fans; here it’s the music itself - honest and intense.  The Gringos, brothers Nicholas and Pete Furgiuele, Pete DeLorenzo and Chris Kaufmann, play each show as if their lives depended on it, and it’s that urgency combined with great song writing, pop beats and skilled harmonies that raise Gringo Star above the cacophonus crowd.  These four guys should be literally showered with the same kind of excited stammering and fawning heaped onto the stars of the early days of rock and roll, those who created and performed all those American standards in doo wop and R&B, the musicians who were raging around the U.S., night after night putting it all out there, playing their hearts out, singing until they were hoarse and soaked in sweat, letting the music do their talking.  There were once musical movements in this country, but the fracturing and splintering of the music scene stopped new waves from forming and cresting. This is a band which is creating the new standards to usher in the next tsunami.  If you have the chance to catch them in a small venue, you better do it while you still can.

His songs are filled with messengers and misanthropes, hopefuls and hypocrites-and as always, his constant themes of redemption, nightlife, heartbreak, and survival. The dubstep electronic genre has emerged as a force in the United States, and no one embodies its momentum more than San Jose based artist NiT GriT. One of the most prolific and hardworking of the new field of dubstep/grime performers, his current music was formed in his home turf of the Bay area from a background in glitch, idm, and breakcore, and is set apart by its soulfulness and melody. True to the trend towards dramatic entrances in so many of the new fraternity of sensational dubstep artists, NiT GriT burst on the scene with his first show in March 2010 in a co-billing with Excision.

The second full-length release from Minneapolis based Now, Now – explores the fragile and often transitory nature of our existence, our perceived understanding of the world around us and relationships shared with others physically and emotionally. Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, An Horse, New Pornographers), Threads forms a sprawling sonic endeavor that showcases the bands incredible growth as songwriters and musicians. Vulnerable vocals give way to oceans of sound retaining definition via deftly layered guitar parts augmented by lingering synths which alternate between background and center stage.

Party Supplies
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Speakeasy Kabaret (412 Congress Ave)
Party Supplies is the stage name of Justin Nealis, a Queens-born producer and literal one man band whose handmade MPC symphonies and heartfelt stage presence blend hip-hop energy with anthemic indie hooks. His homegrown remixes for Arcade Fire and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros turn festival favorites into cut and paste epics, and his production work for the likes of Action Bronson and Das Racist prove his boom-bap bonafides. Yet on original tracks like "Workin Out" and "Going Hard Forever" (from his forthcoming debut LP on Fool's Gold), both sides of Party Supplies combine for yearning singalongs over propulsive live drum machine beats. It's a show that must be seen to be believed, and has made fans-for-life out of the thousands who have already caught PS in action at Fool's Gold parties all year long. The Spring Standards
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ 18th Floor at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)

The Spring Standards are an energetic force of three-part harmony circling over a rock n' roll sound with an old country aftertaste. From small towns to big cities, they explode on stage with spirit, spontaneity, and a style all their own. They are, in no particular order: James Cleare, James Smith and Heather Robb. Each member of the band is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and they use their strengths as a trio to create a sound that listeners might expect from a band twice their size. With an emphasis on three-part harmony and a variety of instrumental switching, their range and energy make each live show a unique event. Paste Magazine chimes, "It's no easy task to find a country/folk haystack buried amongst noisy New York needles, but this winsome three piece rewards the hunter." The band’s debut full-length album Would Things Be Different, produced by Bryce Goggin, was released last year and they have recently finished recording a double-EP to be released in Spring of 2012.

Formed in Austin, WHEELER BROTHERS have emerged as one of the most exciting bands breaking out of Texas. The five-piece act composed of Austin natives combines the gutsy indie vibe of the modern central Texas music scene with the longing strains of time-honored Texas folk. Brothers Nolan, Tyler and Patrick Wheeler met Danny Matthews at LSU where they spent their afternoons picking guitars and swapping stories in the bar rooms of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Once back in Austin, the group rounded out their sound with the addition of a lifelong friend, guitarist A.J. Molyneaux. Each member brings his own musical direction and ideas to the group, and through precise vocal harmonies and a unique cast of instruments. Wheeler Brothers have created a sound that has put their name in the forefront of the Austin music scene.

    Friday, March 16
Headhunters (Outside Back Patio) 720 Red River at 8th St.:

Lushlife
    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:10am - 1:50am @ Lamberts (401 W 2nd St)

    Saturday March 17, 2012 1:15am - 1:50am @ Beauty Bar (617 E. Seventh St. Austin, TX)

From Thomas Fawcett, The Austin Chronicle:

Building off a Left Coast legacy from Freestyle Fellowship to Pharcyde, the Quannum crew breathed life into Bay Area hip-hop previous to the new millennium with relentless creativity. Backpacker anthems "A to G" and "Alphabetic Aerobics" proved Blackalicious MC Gift of Gab one of the all-time great verbal acrobats, while Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker pushed the sonic boundaries of hip-hop as Latyrx. Although not on the same label, Chali 2na, whose bouncing baritone anchored Jurassic 5 harmonies, embodied a similar ethos. The crew reunites on this night with help from West Coast vets Eligh & Amp Live, formerly of Living Legends and Zion I, respectively, who recently teamed up for Therapy at 3. (Shockingly accurately) self-described "half-retarded super electro-charged sex rap" of Colorado's Cobraconda opens, while Minnesota (the DJ, not the state) offers an interlude of throbbing dubstep and glitch-hop.

Also known as "The Writer." Born in Inglewood, raised in Watts, his entry into the music industry was working for Rodney Jerkins & Ricc Rude(Destiny Child's - Cater 2 You). Shortly after that he met artists fellow West Coast artists Damani and Soopafly and formed the group Western Union. That music then found its way into the hands of Snoop Dogg and the rest was history. Their first major label appearance was on the song "Like This" from Snoop Dogg 2006 album Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. His most noticeable achievement is writing three songs on Snoop Dogg's 2009 album Malice n Wonderland. Those songs include "Gangsta Luv" "I Wanna Rock" and"1800". Now an artist on Diamond Lane Music Group, Bad Lucc is set to bring his raw and vivid style to the forefront. When asked what his place in the industry will be, his response is "etched in stone, I will be remembered."

Problem
    Saturday March 17, 2012 TBA - TBA @ Kiss & Fly (404 Colorado St)

Born in Germany, raised in Compton, Problem entered the industry writing a verse for producer & friend Terrace Martin, on a song called "Be Thankful", featured on Snoop Dogg's compilation album "The Big Squeeze". The track garnered praise from notable artists such as Nas & Talib Kweli among others. Recording tracks with recognized artists such as Daz, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg, & DJ Quik, Problem's first big break was when Snoop Dogg heard a record which was also produced by Terrace Martin called "Neva Hafta To Wurry About That". He went on to write three records on Snoop Dogg's "Ego Trippen" LP. Over the span of his career Problem has dropped seven mixtapes, was signed to Universal & has experienced much success with the release of his party anthem "I'm Toe Up". With the talent and accolades to match, Problem is destined to shine. When asked Problem what style of music he wants to present to the world his response is "Whatever the (expletive) I feel like doing. I will not be boxed into any style or genre of music. So when you try to classify my style of rapping, don't. Just let me be an artist." You can expect the unexpected from the Diamond Lane recording artist, as well as new records, mixtapes, and especially more albums.

Rocky Rivera
    Saturday March 17, 2012 TBA - TBA @ Kiss & Fly (404 Colorado St)

Rocky Rivera is a Hip-Hop journalist by day, MC by night, who found international acclaim by winning a Contributing Editor position on MTV's docu-series "I'm From Rolling Stone" in 2007. After lacking inspiration in the literary world, she decided to finally pursue Hip-Hop as a participant, not only as an observer, and began to fill the void with thought-provoking music that you can dance to. A dynamic perfomer, her all-lady crew consisting of DJ Roza and emcee Irie Eyez display a daringly different side of Hip Hop you have to experience to believe. Noted music critic Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation writes “My whole career has been about getting people to hear the stories that need to be heard, and I think her story really needs to be heard.”

Strong Arm Steady
    Saturday March 17, 2012 TBA - TBA @ Kiss & Fly (404 Colorado St)
Strong Arm Steady was formed in the shadows of the West Coast’s Death Row Records movement, which at one time, loomed large over much of the region’s talent. Many Los Angeles artists—themselves students and children of Death Row—were becoming frustrated at the gang mentality that colored perceptions of their burgeoning underground. Out of that frustration came resourcefulness and unity, and as unity grew into community, L.A.’s indie scene began to blossom, not in opposition to Death Row, but as an alternative. They are the new generation. They are Strong Arm Steady.

Terrace Martin & 9th Wonder
    Saturday March 17, 2012 TBA - TBA @ Kiss & Fly (404 Colorado St)
Starting off the new year in good artistic fashion, Terrace Martin is in preparation to not only release some of his best work, but to also make more appearances on the show circuit. Over a 17-year span, this "young veteran" has built an impressive catalogue of his best production (and personal works) that has withstood the test of a "here-today-gone-tomorrow" industry and unpredictable digital era. Jazz is his first love, Hip Hop his second. Somehow, Terrace has successfully managed to dedicate his time to both, garnering the hearts of fans from each genre.

A Conversation with Steve Stoute and Dan Charnas

    From the Austin Chronicle:

"Don't say multicultural," Russell Simmons once told journalist Dan Charnas. "Say multiracial. It's one culture."

Simmons is partially responsible for the latter point being more true today than it's ever been. As the founder of pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam Recordings, he played an integral role in black music crossing over into mainstream culture. Think the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC remixing Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," or LL Cool J's premiere on MTV.

Dan Charnas reported on all of it for The Source, the first major-market magazine to exclusively cover hip-hop. Last year, he published the mind-bendingly detailed The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, a 672-page analysis of every rap deal that made America the colorful society it is today. He knows a thing or two about the power of the crossover.

"When I talk about crossover, I'm not talking about mixing it up, which is what guys like Nelly and Snoop did," he says, referring to Nelly's 2006 collaboration with country hit-factory Tim McGraw and Snoop Dogg's 2008 blues choker "My Medicine." "I'm talking about a system of white supremacy whereby a black artist, in order to get any mainstream exposure, has to change their musical style or whiten up their music. Nelly was already a pop star when he made that song. Snoop was huge before he made 'My Medicine.'"

Charnas references Michael Jackson putting Eddie Van Halen on "Beat It" and Lionel Richie's "Deep River Woman" collaboration with Alabama as prime examples of pointed crossover, moments when a black artist made the conscious decision to fall in with a white market. When Barack Obama was elected president, Charnas knew the end of music's racial divide was at hand.

"Obama represents the beginning of what you might call the final conflict against white supremacy," he says. "There's no question in my mind that the 21st century, for black artists, is a much more equitable playing field than it ever was in the Seventies and Eighties."

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters
    Saturday March 17, 2012 11:30am - 12:47pm @ Vimeo Theater (501 East 4th St)

Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters follows the acclaimed photographer’s decade-long quest to create a series of haunting, surreal, and stunningly elaborate portraits of small-town American life. His photographs are like single-frame movies — partly because each composition brims with narrative, partly because he uses cinematic tools such as special effects, hundreds of lights, and huge crews of technicians. As we travel with him — from first inspirations, through countless creative and logistical obstacles, to the instant where all the elements coalesce in a single perfect moment — we realize that, despite their vast scale, Crewdson’s images grow from his most intimate dreams and fantasies.

The Austin Chronicle recommends this event in "Art as Acts of Subversion and Immersion: 'The Sheik and I,' 'Trash Dance,' and 'Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters'." Read the full feature here.

The sound of the wind and cracks of thunder are heard as a teen rushes throughout his house gathering supplies. His brother lays on the couch listening to music. They enter into a closet to wait out a tornado. While inside the closet the question arises of what is more important to have when a storm is threatening. One believes that flashlights, food, water, and batteries are more important while the other believes that photo albums and memories are. The two eventually get into a struggle and one decides to leave the closet to save the past.

The Comedy
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:15pm - 1:47pm @ Stateside Theatre (719 Congress Ave)
Indifferent even to the prospects of inheriting his father's estate, Swanson (Tim Heidecker) whiles away his days with a group of aging Brooklyn hipsters, engaging in acts of recreational cruelty and pacified boredom. Desensitized and disenchanted, he strays into a series of reckless situations that may offer the promise of redemption or the threat of retribution. A scathing look at the white male on the verge of collapse, Rick Alverson's carefully observed portrait provokes and disorients; a cautionary fable for the autumn of the American Era.

Facebook Music Marketing: Pages, Feeds, Games
Musicians are adopting Facebook as a core component of their online marketing strategy. But which of Facebook's social channels should artists focus on? Facebook Pages, the news feed, or social games? Several companies such as RootMusic have sprung up providing Myspace Music-style band profile apps, but fans don't often visit the Facebook Pages of musicians where they're hosted. Headliner.fm has focused on helping bands gain exposure in the news feed, but record labels want to see a direct return on investment, not just a bigger audience. MXP4's Bopler Games and other developers are now selling songs in social games, but do enough people play them to make deals with game companies worthwhile? Representatives of these companies debate which of these channels is most important, and discuss how bands can tie the channels together to conduct successful marketing campaigns that don't spam Facebook’s users.

Has Digital Music Made Indie Labels Go Mainstream?
Cloud-based streaming music providers have changed the way digital music is being consumed, and indie record labels are cashing in. Label executives are negotiating aggressively to make sure they profit from the shift to the cloud, where service providers are designing desirable services for a global audience, and giving artists increased access to new fans. The digital music space has enjoyed an explosion of options in recent months - some with "the big four" label support, some without - all with varying types of subscription models, technology investment and device capabilities. Hear about the strategies for these new business models, and how collaboration helps artists reach new fans around the world, offering independent labels increased exposure without sacrificing independence.

New Atlantis: New Orleans Music Rebuilds

    From the Austin Chronicle:

John Swenson, who has written about popular music since 1967, is a writer's writer, meaning his work speaks as much to the art as its subject. To Swenson, the subject remains music, as dear to his heart as the city of New Orleans, where he's lived and worked since 1999.

"The music," Swenson flatly declares, "brought me here. It's bottomless. I never feel like I've reached the end of what you can hear. There's always more mystery. For anyone stimulated by culture, it's an endless spiritual well."

The alluringly nicknamed City That Care Forgot has always attracted writers as much as musicians, but in last year's book, New Atlantis: Musicians Battle for the Survival of New Orleans, Swenson makes the case for music as the city's artistic soul. The soul can't be broken or bled out the way New Orleans hemorrhaged when Hurricane Katrina nearly sliced its aorta. For his South by Southwest panel, Swenson addresses how important music is amid adversity.

That in itself is a massive effort, given the depth in which music is in the DNA of not only New Orleans but also Louisiana culture. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, it boasts a built-in survival instinct that transcends not only natural disasters but also the man-made ones. Each of the cultures that contributed to New Orleans' identity did so musically and uniquely. A little over 200 years ago, it was a French and Spanish colonial outpost in a slave culture smack dab in the Choctaw Nation.

"I don't want to go too deep into history, but it's essential to understanding why it's so unique here," says Swenson. "The other thing that makes New Orleans special is that everything is community-oriented. The Irish and Italians, they came here, too, and there was no overriding American culture for them to assimilate with. The neighborhoods kept the music alive. And the music was essential to every part of life, from birth to death."

Swenson believes music has done the most to restore New Orleans' strength and faith in itself heroically, but the city's biggest challenge may be back in the hood.

"The continuity of passing things down generation to generation is being severed. Completely. The next generation of young people are not being nurtured by traditions that were important."

Jerrell Johnson
    Saturday March 17, 2012 12:40pm - 1:00pm @ Carver Museum Boyd Vance Theater (1165 Angelina St)
At 22 years of age, Jerrell Johnson has God-given wisdom that surpasses that of many of his peers. He has a way with people and with music that could only be credited to God. Jerrell Johnson began writing music at an early age but his love for music didn’t always include God. After being witnessed to by a friend from school, Jerrell’s life was forever changed. Using his life experiences to mold and shape his message, Jerrell began to work on music for a full project. In 2008, he released an album called Love Is My Anthem to the general public and the reaction to the album was incredible. People were touched by his transparency and by the way he approached and introduced the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In the year 2009, he released a second project, free to the public, called The Green Screen. As his fans continued to request more music he continued to write. His latest release, Peanut Butter and Jealousy, was released in 2010 and is featured on popular music review website such as Rapzilla.com and DaSouth.com. His single, Peanut Butter has received airtime on Spirit Fm as well as The Righteous Temple of Hip Hop, on 88.5 Fm. Jerrell has recently opened for Group1 Crew and has worked with artists such as Urban D. (Pastor Tommy Kyllonen), Sicily and Ker-Leen.
His latest project, ‘True Colors’ was released October 1, 2011 worldwide. In this album, Jerrell shares his life experiences with listeners and gives his fans a front row seat to the episodes of his life. With Christ at the center of his message, Jerrell uses people as an inspiration for his art. This album currently has an average rating of 5 starts on iTunes as it has impacted the lives of all who have heard it. It also currently ranks in the top 25 of Christian hip-hop albums on iTunes charts.

Justin Townes Earle

On a rainy Nashville Thursday last October, Justin Townes Earle leapt onstage at the famed Ryman Auditorium to accept the 2011 Americana Music Award for Song of the Year. The triumphant evening capped a turbulent twelve months for the gifted young musician categorized by significant hardship as well as notable achievement including debut performances at New York's Carnegie Hall and on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Just one week later, Earle retreated to the western mountains of North Carolina to record his next album, Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now - an intriguing title given the importance of change in Earle's approach to art. "I think it's the job of the artist to be in transition and constantly learning more," he says. "The new record is completely different than my last one, Harlem River Blues. This time I've gone in a Memphis-soul direction."

Those who've followed Earle's growth since releasing his debut EP Yuma in 2007 won't be surprised he's shooting off in another direction. For an artist whose list of influences runs the gamut from Randy Newman to Woody Guthrie, Chet Baker to the Replacements, and Phil Ochs to Bruce Springsteen, categories are useless.

"Great songs are great songs," Earle says. "If you listen to a lot of soul music, especially the Stax Records stuff, the chord progressions are just like country music. And just like country music, soul music began in the church, so it has its roots in the same place."

Perhaps then it's also not surprising Earle chose a converted church in Asheville, NC to record Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now. Recorded completely live (no overdubs) over a four-day period with Harlem River Blues co-producer Skylar Wilson, the album sheds the rockabilly bravado of previous records in favor of a confident, raw, and vulnerable sound. Says Earle, "the whole idea was to record everything live, making everything as real as it could be, and putting something out there that will hopefully stand the test of time and space."

The result: songs like "Down on the Lower East Side" and "Unfortunately, Anna" are equally timely and timeless. The former finds Earle channeling Closing Time era Tom Waits while the latter echoes the dirges of Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town. That said, gentle heartbreakers like the album's title track and "Am I That Lonely Tonight" are uniquely Earle, solidifying his role as one of his generation's greatest songwriters.

Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now comes out March 27th via Bloodshot Records.
