Apache Dropout
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Whiskey Room (503 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Apache Dropout is a full on lysergic boogie trio from Southern Indiana. They've self-released a handful of recordings while touring the sub-U.S. during the past couple years. Their debut self-titled LP was released in early 2011 on Family Vineyard and has been heralded as the best garage album of the year by likes of Mojo, Uncut and Dusted. With mostly guitar/bass/drums they channel soul melodies, primitive rock thump and blasted solos and turn them into highly textured nuggets of punk art. In wake of the LP, the labels Mexican Summer and Trouble in Mind have issued 7" records by Apache Dropout in 2011. Formed in 2008, the group's previous endeavors include John Wilkes Booze (Kill Rock Stars), Hot Fighter #1 and Lord Fyre (Emperor Jones).

Broncho
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Friends (208 E 6th St)

Harkening back to punk rock’s glory days of the 70s, Oklahoma outfit BRONCHO captures the aggression, DIY authenticity and youthful exhilaration of a bygone era and then drags it by the hair into the Here and Now, creating a fresh sound that’s unlike anything being played today. With echoes of The Replacements, Iggy and the Stooges and The Ramones, BRONCHO’s exuberant ten song debut Can’t Get Past the Lips is a blisteringly cathartic flash of gritty, crunching guitar work supported by an assaultive rhythm section and made whole by songwriter Ryan Lindsey’s aggressive, yelping vocal work.

Craft Spells
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Spill (212 E. 6th St.)
In the cold and dreary winter of 2009, alone in his bedroom and hidden from the darkness of the world outside Justin Paul Vallesteros had begun working on something that would change his life forever. What began as a couple notes played in experimentation soon transformed into vibrant melodies that soon shook Vallesteros' musical foundation to the core. Guitar chords laced over pulse sating synth melodies and drum rhythms was a departure from Justin's previous work; he began to create the dreamy nostalgic pop music that is Craft Spells. Joined by Jack Smith (bass), Javier Suarez (lead guitar) and Peter Michel (drums), they recently returned from a European tour and plan on releasing a new ep February 2012.

DURAN is a solo project, it has a new sound called chirripop, this style of music includes electrocumbia,
dance hall. R&B, rock & trip hop. However, the lyrics have a particular style full of street and raw
elements, evoking a real Colombian sound beneath an obscene “fandango” that will make you move by the rhythim of hell. His album debut comes with all the flavor of his country, providing the popular music a hot and hip status that makes the colombian sound into an aproachabble music to the world.

Enjambre
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Buffalo Billiards (201 E 6th St)
Enjambre is a contemporary rock ensemble, their sound has sparkles of the sixties and seventies, South American ballads, a touch of nostalgia, and climatic moments, all this wrapped up into a rock and roll context. Enjambre was originally formed by brothers Luis (vocals) and Rafael Navejas (bass) who released their first record in 2005 named Consuelo en domingo in which soon became a local buzz within the Spanish rock scene in Southern California. After a line up adjustment, their youngest brother Julian (keyboards) joined the band along with their lifetime jamming friends from their hometown Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Ángel Sánchez (drums) and from Los Angeles, California, Javier Mejía (lead guitar).

Singer-songwriter Jillian Edwards hails from Texas, but she now calls Nashville home. A graduate of Baylor University, her crystalline, breezy soprano and intelligent, heartfelt songwriting have been steadily attracting fans, including Fervent Records recording artist/producer Chris August, who produced her first album, Galaxies & Such. In November of 2011, Jillian release her sophomore effort, Headfirst, which was the No. 1 album on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart on release day and throughout that following week, in addition to peaking at #12 on the overall iTunes album chart on release day. Once again finding her teaming with August (and Jacob Schrodt) Headfirst finds Jillian exploring lyrical themes that resonate profound and universal simultaneously. Her engaging and delightfully unconventional melodic sense is also showcased, assuredly inviting listeners to dive Headfirst for more.

New Moods
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

The seeds of New Moods sprouted a couple years ago in small house on the outskirts of Bushwick. After hours of overhearing his housemate artist/vocalist Billy Jones (Other Passengers) feverishly writing and recording rough demos for a solo project, producer/engineer Sean Maffucci (Icewater Scandal) was quickly inspired to get involved. Having spent the better part of the last 4 years producing and engineering albums from his Junkyard studio, (Bear in Heaven, Gang Gang Dance , et al) Maffucci knew he wanted to contribute. With the help of his magical hands, he quickly laid down some beat and synth programming over an early version of the song “Dying/Trying.” Immediately upon first listen Jones and Maffucci knew they were on to something special – thus the birth of New Moods.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The White Horse (500 Comal St, Austin, TX 78702)

Ray Wylie Hubbard writes the kind of songs that make you want to ride along no matter where he’s going,
because you know it’s gonna get strange somewhere along the way. The references to Muddy Waters
being as deep as William Blake (“I really do believe it,’’ Ray says) and lipstick pickups, resonator slides, the
dreams of drunken poets, deceased call girls, opium, wasp’s nests, clouds growing a tail, his ability to segue
    seamlessly from primal exclamations of carnal lust into songs about salvation without pausing for irony;
and a craftsmanship that manages to rhyme mescaline and gasoline and Volkswagen with dragon while
painting vivid portraits of characters both real and unreal, all evoke a sense of place that is larger than life
but in no way made up.

Rodriguez
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ Mohawk (912 Red River)

It’s one of the lost classics of the ‘60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and what’s more intriguing is that its maker – a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez – was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution.

The Coathangers were a band before they were musicians. The Atlanta quartet started out as an excuse to hang out and play parties. Their jokey attitude ran deep, right down to their name—a self-admittedly crude abortion reference for an all-girl group. The whole knowing-how-to-play-an-instrument thing was just a minor hurdle in their musical mission. And to their credit, The Coathangers stormed onto the scene, regardless of the handicap, as a completely unaffected, unpretentious, deliciously sloppy, and totally infectious rock band. What they lacked in formal training they made up for in an innate understanding of how to craft a hook and propel a song forward on sheer charisma. It was impossible not to like them.

The Tenant
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ The Tap Room at Six (311 Colorado St)

Bandleader Brad Register had already endured the crucible of being in a near-breakout act with Summerbirds in the Cellar. With major league accolades and heavyweight supporters, he got closer to the promised land than most ever will, but legal problems and band discord became Register’s emotional prison. But from those stormy clouds, one of the Southeast’s most notable songwriters now re-emerges with a svelte new musical vehicle beaming with clarity and lightness. Register’s distinctive melodic signatures are drawn in crisper, more flowing profiles along with the distinctive sound of recent member, drummer Jeff Ilgenfritz. Recently The Tenants went into the studio with Kid Rock Bassist Aaron Julison and came out with a sound that can only be described as dream pop, creating a unique album with no boundaries. At the end of last year, the Tenant released there first track off of their ‘Hustlers of The World; album, titled Mystery Mountain. Following this, every week after, they have and are still continuing to release other singles from the album.

He enjoyed huge solo success with the singles “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive!”, composed and performed on hits for everyone from AOR giants Foreigner to none-more-quirky new wave girl Lene Lovich, produced three superlative albums for Prefab Sprout, and even co-wrote the much-sampled early rap classic “Magic’s Wand” by Whodini.

Todd Snider
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 12:40am @ St David's Historic Sanctuary (301 E 8th St Austin, TX 78701)

Todd Snider: Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables bio
Todd Snider is on the happy back end of happy hour at a favorite East Nashville bar,
talking about his new album Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables. “This record doesnʼt
come from good times,” Snider says. “I wanted to sound the way I feel, which
sometimes means sounding like a broken soul.”
On the 10 new songs, Snider doesnʼt talk around the vulnerable part, or the angry part,
or the part about how everything weʼre taught about goodness and righteousness and
capitalism, about God and family values winds up exploding into violence and chaos,
wonder and longing. He might carry the mantle of “storyteller” – itʼs what he titled his live
record, after all – but Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables is anything but a nice,
    folk/Americana troubadour album.
    Itʼs not a nice anything.
It is jagged, leering, lurching and howling, and filled with unhappy endings both
experienced and intimated: “It ainʼt the despair that gets you, itʼs the hope,” he sings in
the album-closer, “Big Finish.” That Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables is also roaringly
funny is tribute to Sniderʼs unique sensibilities, and to his standing as what Rolling
Stone magazine calls “Americaʼs sharpest musical storyteller.” Anguish without laughter
is boring, like intensive care without morphine, and Snider has never been within 100
miles of boring. Also, he didnʼt earn the attention, friendship and fandom of American
musical giants like Kris Kristofferson and John Prine by writing mopey protest songs.
Anyway, these arenʼt protest songs and theyʼre not meant to incite class warfare
(though he knows they might anyway). Theyʼre populated mostly by losers in the midst
of losing, with a couple of spotlight appearances from the humbly anointed 1 percent. At
albumʼs outset (“In The Beginning”), Snider credits the church with sustaining peace by
noting that “We still need religion to keep the poor from killing the rich.” From there, itʼs
on to the certainty of warped karma (“Good things happen to bad people,” he sings in
“New York Banker.”), to a remarkable reworking of “West Nashville Grand Ballroom
Gown” (possibly the albumʼs most acerbic song, and from the pen of Jimmy Buffett...
no, really), and a slew of stories inspired by the world at large, writ small and barbed, in
a manner both penetrating and empathetic. Thereʼs one happy love song, called
“Brenda,” about Sniderʼs favorite couple, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.
“I admire that relationship a lot,” Snider says. “What Mick and Keith have is real, and it
canʼt be touched and it canʼt be beat. Iʼve never met them, but I believe in the Rolling
Stones. Thatʼs who I think about at Christmas, anymore. They opened their hearts and
gave us so much. And they tried to be true to each other.”
Musically, Snider and co-producer Eric McConnell sought a sound that mirrored the
times and that didnʼt replicate anything theyʼd done together on critically acclaimed
works East Nashville Skyline, The Devil You Know or Peace Queer. With McConnell on
bass and Snider playing guitar and harmonica, they gathered a core band of
percussionist Paul Griffith, violinist/vocalist (and gifted songwriter) Amanda Shires, and
keyboard player Chad Staehly, along with guest guitarist Jason Isbell and harmony
vocalist Mick Utley, and offered up a sonic mission.
“I told them I wanted to make a mess,” Snider says. “That was the goal.”
And so a handful of accomplished musicians set about making a mess. And did so.
Shiresʼ violin is the call-and-response heroine to Sniderʼs lyrics, filling the role Scarlett
Rivera filled for Bob Dylan on Desire. Only messier. Meanwhile, Griffith makes like
some off-kilter offspring of Keith Moon and Zigaboo Modeliste while Sniderʼs guitar
    plays lead switchblade.
The result is something disconcerting, cracked and wholly original. Itʼs something that
stands apart from the music of Sniderʼs heroes, and from Sniderʼs own, muchcelebrated
past. Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables is Sniderʼs 12th album (14th, if we
count a “best of” set and a collection of B-sides and demos), and it uses its
predecessors not as a compass but as a trampoline. Snider found different song forms,
different inspirations (from Alaska neʼer do well Digger Dave to Chicago Mayor, former
White House Chief of Staff and friend..... no, really..... Rahm Emanuel) and different
means of expression. He paints a world where begging turns to mugging, where
investment turns to ruin, where babies grow into felons, where honesty is blunt trauma:
“Wish I could show you how you hurt me in a way that wouldnʼt hurt you, too,” he sings.
    And thereʼs no way.

Heavy, down tuned, southern fried, whiskey soaked sabbra cadabra. Their live show pulsates with seething and sultry, sweaty energy. Bringing as much groove as brutal thunder, the music is like a hammer straight to your soul, crashing down through the sky... only you welcome its impact the moment they tear into their first song. Spilling their guts on every stage they play, they've opened for Slipknot, Helmet, Crowbar, Saint Vitus, Blue Cheer, Mudvayne, Fu Manchu, 3 Inches of Blood, Trouble, Zeke, Pentagram and Valient Thorr, to name a few. Featuring the soaring, soulful vocal power and prowess of Jamie Nova and the monster riff-crafting of Mischa Kianne on guitar and occasionally violin, along with the unmatched low-end heaviness of Jacy Peckham on bass coupled with the bone-crushing, rock solid groove provided by Dana Sims on drums, Witchburn is the sound of rebellion in the voice of a hate-child conceived during a mythical orgy between Black Sabbath, Janis Joplin, Ronnie James Dio and Heart.

Born Regan Farquhar, the Los Angeles MC was introduced to hip-hop culture early -- his father wrote the screenplay to one of the earliest films focusing on hip-hop, Krush Groove. He began rapping at age nine, releasing his first record at age 13 with his group, 4/29, named after the 1992 L.A. riots. By the mid-'90s, Busdriver was a regular at the Project Blowed open mic, where he would meet future collaborators and underground luminaries like Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and Freestyle Fellowship. And shortly after, the vinyl did flow.

Filastine’s debut record, Burn It , was released in 2006 by DJ Rupture to much critical acclaim: “Filled with both with jagged edges and moments of sad sweetness ... Burn It is sure to win fans across multiple scenes”- XLR8R. The album ricocheted around the world, licensed and re-released by labels in France, Japan, and the US. The follow up album, Dirty Bomb, dropped in 2009 through an alliance of labels led by French electro-dub imprint Jarring Effects. Prefix Mag called it “the prototype of globalized urban sound... It will devastate your subwoofer.”
Performing up to a hundred concerts per year, Filastine triggers live riddims and synchronized video from a heap of electronics wired to an amplified shopping cart. You may have seen him at a sweaty Tokyo nightclub, a football stadium in Casablanca, a respected euro-fest like Sónar, in a parking lot in Borneo, or touring the US with Bassnectar.
Before making electronic music Filastine played with the Infernal Noise Brigade, a marching band he founded for the Battle of Seattle. He continues to use audio as a tool of intervention with the Sound Swarm, an orchestra of bikemounted megaphones conducted by pirate radios transmitters.
Spring of 2012 will see the release of a new album made in tighter collaboration with Javanese vocalist Nova Ruth and Lyon-based cellist Amélie Bouard. Expect to find Filastine anywhere, crashing borders and transforming friction into beauty.

Lionel Richie
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00am - 1:00am @ ACL Live at the Moody Theater (310 W Willie Nelson Blvd 78701)
    Lionel Richie
    BIO
Lionel Richie proves that you can go home again with his new album, Tuskegee, a collection of 13 of his international hits performed as duets with today’s country music superstars, and it feels even better than he hoped. Tuskegee represents a full-circle moment for the international icon who has returned to his Southern roots to create an album that serves as a highlight of his unforgettable body of work that touches people of all backgrounds, faiths and ages around the world.
These innovative musical interpretations have given new meaning to these anthems of our day, whether it’s pairing with Tim McGraw on “Sail On,” joining Shania Twain on “Endless Love” or dueting with Kenny Chesney on the compelling “My Love.” Blake Shelton’s powerful voice brings a masculine Oklahoma sweetness to “You Are,” while Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles’ overwhelming passion is haunting on “Hello.” Jason Aldean brings a fresh country-rock edge to “Say You, Say Me,” and Darius Rucker’s soulfulness brings a rich texture to “Stuck On You,” creating harmonies that sound like the two have been singing together for years. Rascal Flatts combines a contagious enthusiasm and a jaw-dropping vocal range for a memorable duet of “Dancing On The Ceiling,” and Willie Nelson’s unique phrasings on “Easy” create the rhythm of a gently rocking boat.
Eager to explore new ground, Richie insisted that the other singers select the songs from his catalog to record, and he beseeched his partners to ignore his original versions and instead perform the songs as if they were their own. “The most important part of this album had to be that every artist had to leave the recording session and immediately want to put that song in their show,” he says. “I wanted it the way they would do it in their show, which means I captured their essence. You make the song a Willie Nelson song. You make the song a Rascal Flatts song.”
But to be sure, every note on Tuskegee represents Richie’s life, loves and family. “All the players that I thought had retired from the music business are now living in Nashville,” he says. “So when I walked into the studio to start this album, it came full circle. Doing this album was just a mere fact of coming back to the beginning, back to basics, back to home. The part of it I love the most is that the journey has been one of discovering myself.”
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, where he was exposed to country, gospel, R&B and classical music in equal parts, creating a musical foundation so strong that it has been able to withstand the industry’s boundaries and barriers throughout his storied career. Young Lionel was a wide-eyed dreamer with a big but vulnerable heart who strived to please his grandmother, a classical pianist whose nod of acceptance meant everything to him. Like many boys, he struggled at times to find his place in a world that could make him feel awkward and out of place.
“Did my grandmother have an influence on me? Absolutely. In fact, every time I play one of those chords, wrapped around a little country vocal, wrapped around a little R&B twinge, that’s the house,” he says. “That’s the lady who lives in that house. I can almost see her face every time I come up with something else new as a song. She’d always ask that question, ‘Now where did that come from?’ Or, ‘Who told you how to do that?’ It’s a part of that air in that house and around that town and in that community. It’s just a part of life.”
Despite the national civil rights battles, Richie felt safe in the nurturing cocoon of the family’s home located on the campus of Tuskegee University (a home he still owns today), where he was taught that anything was possible and failure wasn’t an option. His house served as ground zero for his friends, where food and fellowship were bountiful. “It was wonderful because success really was not due to money; it was due to the fact of warmth and security,” he says. “You knew you were loved not only by your mom and dad and your grandmother, but also the whole town. The whole town adopted you.
“It was a house of laughter and fun and craziness in the midst of some serious moments in history and life,” he says. “It’s just that the kids never knew it. They never taught us prejudice. Even to the day my dad died, I said, ‘Dad, why didn’t you tell me about some of that?’ He said, ‘Because I didn’t want to pass that onto you. Those are my memories. I wanted you to understand that you have no limitations. We had limitations, but you don’t.’ I use that as my mantra when I go forward now.”
Buoyed by this support, he dared to buck the academic traditions surrounding him as a college student to help form the Commodores, plotting and practicing with the group in his Tuskegee basement to become “the black Beatles.” They achieved the seemingly impossible when they landed a major label deal and garnered hits including “Sail On,” “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Still.”
He eventually left the Commodores and Alabama, embarking on a whirlwind solo career that earned sales of more than 100 million albums, 22 Top 10 hits, five Grammys, an Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe and a host of other awards from virtually every other major entertainment organization. He has shaped popular culture as his music has served as the soundtrack of several generations around the world.
His music has remained at the forefront of his fans’ milestone moments – first kisses, first wedding dances, first break-ups and first children. It’s impossible to separate those memories and his music because they are inextricably intertwined. Quite simply, our lives wouldn’t have been the same without his music. “Every Lionel Richie song that I can think of I had a personal experience with – high school homecomings, proms, you name it,” says Rascal Flatts’ Gary LeVox. “Lionel was always playing in my house. His music always said what we felt and couldn’t express.”
Darius Rucker, who joins Richie on “Stuck On You,” says, “I wanted to work with Lionel because he’s one of my idols. Lionel’s more a part of my DNA than really an idol. I can’t even begin to say how important Lionel’s influence has been on me.”
Today, Richie’s flawless and seemingly effortless voice packs the emotional wallop of a visit by a beloved friend. Tuskegee is a long-overdue musical homecoming and a testament to his lasting legacy and timelessness of his songs.
Tuskegee is where he discovered that he was a songwriter, the place where he was inspired to write his first hits. “My stories are from my growing up,” he says. “My titles ‘Sail On’ and ‘Easy,’ they’re all from my growing up. Now of course, growing up in Tuskegee had a great deal to do with it because that’s simple life. It’s not a complicated life down there. You’re happy, you’re mad, you’re sad, you’re glad, you party.
“I’m going back to the beginning of where I wrote all of these songs in the first place,” he says. “It’s just fitting that this album would be called Tuskegee. What this album basically did for me was give me the opportunity to discover those characters that I thought I was going to forget – those childhood memories – but those are in those songs.”
From his song subjects to his song titles, Richie is known for the brilliance of simplicity. Since his days with the Commodores, he has vowed not to chase trends or try to be hip. Instead, he focused on writing music that appealed to those living between New York and Los Angeles. He is naturally drawn to the one subject that never goes out of style -- love. “’I love you, I want you, I need you forever.’ If I write that 97 different ways, they only want to hear, ‘I love you, I want you, I need you forever.’ Love is the one answer that everybody wants a piece of.”
His poetic simplicity in telling stories of universal truths is one of the reasons why so many country singers have been drawn to his songs for decades. “Lionel has the most amazing gift for taking conversation and making music out of it,” says Kenny Rogers, who joins Richie on “Lady.” “If you listen...

Dirty Ghosts
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:10am - 12:45am @ Beauty Bar (617 E. Seventh St. Austin, TX)

Like dirty ghosts, Allyson Baker and Carson Binks, two Toronto expats, rose from the ashes of their old San Francisco-based band Parchman Farm and formed Dirty Ghosts in 2006, a stripped down form of gritty garage and psychedelia with drum loop-y programming by hip-hop recording artist and producer Aesop Rock.
After looking for a singer with no luck, Baker finally and reluctantly said “fuck it” and has since added vocalist to her resume. But when she lost Binks in 2011 to Oakland stoner metal band Saviours, she had to take matters further, by re-working and re-recording the sound and amassing a new line-up featuring Erin McDermott, Nick Andre, and Ben Tuttle. The sound is pretty funky and new wave rock-y with Speak & Spell-era Depeche Mode beats in the background. Baker’s powerful vocals are heartfelt and prominent, not awash in reverb as so many singers are these days — pretty ballsy for someone who never wanted to be a vocalist.
The band’s debut LP Metal Moon is out February 21 on Last Gang Records. With an upcoming US tour and appearances at both Noise Pop and SXSW festivals, as well as a concerted effort to get new with their style and stay fresh, Dirty Ghosts are worth keeping your eye on in 2012.

Nguzunguzu
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:10am - 12:50am @ Barbarella (611 Red River St)
Nguzunguzu's (prounounced en-goo-zoo-en-goo-zoo) bubbling, otherworldly productions stitch percussively forward experimental sounds into a club-friendly framework. Alongside kindred spirits in the Fade To Mind crew (Kingdom, Total Freedom) Nguzunguzu seamlessly cross genres, tempos, and atmospheres to create a new emotive electronic club realm that immerses body and mind. It's something that has to be experienced to truly understand. Describing their own sound as "sad, sexy, scary", making you move isn't their only mission...they want to make you feel, maybe cry, and then dance the pain away.
Raised on 90s R&B/Hip-Hop radio and underground club music, the Los Angeles based duo (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) revere contemporary, radio-friendly producers like The Dream or Bangladesh to be cutting edge as many of the current fringe electronic movements and trends. While they reference the explicitly experimental modern sounds of Footwork and House-inflected UK Bass, Nguzunguzu dig deep to compliment those sounds finding some of the freshest urban pop happening now domestically and globally, both obscure and mainstream.

Trash Talk
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:15am - 12:35am @ Lustre Pearl (97 Rainey St. Austin, Austin, TX 78701)
Forwards ever, backwards never. In a perfect world, those four words would tell you everything you need to know about Sacramento thrash-punk juggernaut Trash Talk. But in a perfect world, these four furious scions of guitar-wrought destruction wouldn't exist. Lee, Garrett, Spencer and Sam are fueled by our ugly, and they give it back in spades. The Trash Talk live grind is a notorious thing -- an anarchic, energetic and often painful paean to otherwise oppressed angst that's unsurprisingly found footing all over the world, from the U.S. to Europe, to Australia and Japan. And in between that nearly ceaseless touring, the band's matched its on-the-road fervor with an impressive collection of recorded brutality, from 2009's "East of Eden" single featuring vocals from hardcore icon Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Off!), to last year's ragged full-length masterpiece Eyes & Nines, to their recent split 7-inch with Wavves.

On their recently released 7-inch EP for True Panther Sounds, Trash Talk continue to bodily propel their sound down the gnarled, grime-swathed path they've hewn for themselves. The aptly named opener "Awake" careens through the gate in a hail of shred. "Slander" squeals, stacks, smashes and releases in one minute flat, while "Blind Evolution" seems epic at over two, progressing from rapid thrash to a grungy, halftime sludge. Then, in comes "Burn Alive," tailor-made to elicit air punches (be aware of your surroundings when you drop the needle), with its screeched out anti-wisdom: "The good die young, but the great survive." Finally, "Gimme Shelter" brings things to a punishing, pummeling close and it all happens so quickly, so feverishly that the listener's left beaten, bruised and ears bleeding with no real sense of what just happened. Which is, of course, how Trash Talk likes it. Forwards ever, backwards never.

Doomtree
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:15am - 1:15am @ Scoot Inn (1308 E. 4th St.)
Wings and teeth. No two symbols could've been better chosen to represent Minneapolis rap stalwarts Doomtree. The endlessly innovative crew/label has defied categorization from the start, leaving behind convention for what's best described as aggressive transcendence. Like most families, as well as the imagery this one employs, Doomtree is as defined by its internal differences as its similarities: Seven artists whose diversity of tastes and consistency of character combine to make the team an unstoppable, honest, creatively vicious whole. Their next crew release, “No Kings”, is set for a November 22nd release on the label of the same namesake.
It's unsurprising then that Doomtree's origins are a decade deep, dating back to 2001 when a handful of friends fresh out of high school hatched a plan to make a life out of the passion that'd carried them that far. Handmade CD-Rs (the start of their cult-beloved False Hopes series) and local shows (echoed by the annual Doomtree Blowout festival today) evolved into a proper business and respectable home base. In the time since, P.O.S., Dessa, Sims, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger have become stars in their own right, but no matter where their careers take them (poetry books, the Gayngs super-band with Bon Iver, records with Rhymesayers, Strange Famous and Frenchkiss), they always come home.
While 2008's full-crew album Doomtree functioned as a group manifesto and (re)introduction to each member's particular charms, 2011 was all about claiming what was already theirs. As rap, flush with new blood, began to get wild again, Doomtree reminded us that they've been doing it for a decade, fusing punk's explosive energy with hip-hop's heady swagger. The WUGAZI mixtape 13 Chambers, mashing Fugazi classics with Wu-Tang bangers, was a perfect palate cleanser for the group's strikingly ambitious No Kings LP. Ready to break new collaborative ground, they stocked up on booze and sandwich fixings, retreated to a Wisconsin cabin and stayed there till they'd created something bold, beautiful and hard.
The title of the record is both a call for rebellion and respect: Obey no kings, seek no thrones. Indeed No Kings displays a gang of friends who are fearless in each other's company and beholden to none. At times musical and lush ("Beacon") and at times dark and clanging ("Bolt Cutter"), the beats project the radical power of P.O.S., the inventive classicism of Cecil Otter, the moving moodiness of Paper Tiger and the face-melting heat of Lazerbeak. Meanwhile, Mike Mictlan and Sims trade lithe lines with much swagger over smashing drums on "Punch-Out," Otter and Dessa get bluesy on top of the mournful guitar of "Little Mercy," and P.O.S. leads the amped-up charge for "Bangarang," which celebrates "ten years in our lane."
Both fun and fierce, blade-flashing and uplifting, unpredictable and unapologetic, No Kings is the sound of seven people who look different, talk different and listen to different music coming together and simply going full-tilt on an album from start to finish. Wings and teeth—it's the Doomtree way.

ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, formed in the late 1990s while the band members were students at UC Santa Barbara, and has been touring and releasing albums steadily with this lineup since 2002. There’s a universal reach to California’s ALO, whose warmly inviting, delightfully malleable music stretches out an open hand to give you a twirl and put some swing in your step. Feeling really good is an intrinsic aspect of ALO, something abundantly clear in concert halls, where the band lights up audiences from the inside and artfully captured in the studio. Little bit of funk, a little bit of pop, a lot of energy and a big dollop of dance-worthy music - that's the recipe that's brought ALO a fan base far and wide.

    MARCUS MANCHILD
As the new school trailblazer for Houston’s burgeoning Hip-Hop revival, Marcus Manchild is on a mission. The skateboard swag rhymespitter grew up on the Southwest side of Houston, raised on local celebrities like Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire, ZRO and Lil KeKe. By 16, Marcus began making his own music, influenced by Houston greats, but geared to make his own mark with a new style.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Andre3000, Mac Dre, Ludacris, and Twista, Marcus began honing his skills and embracing new facets of rhyme. That boost in his lyrical prowess reached Texas-based indie label AMG (Authentik Music Group), who readily signed the rising star. His first project under the AMG umbrella was The Preseason mixtape, followed by the monumental SPACEDOUT. It was then that Marcus sealed the deal with his signature abstract (“out of this world”) style that earned him the name the “Space God”. Both projects included collaborations with with Soulja Boy, Yo Gotti, Bun B, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, J Dawg, Killa Kyleon, ZRO, Paul Wall, Brian Angel (Day 26), and more.
The stage is now set for Marcus to put his new Houston flavor on the map with Preseason 2. The sequel mixtape is led by the cut “A Million” with Travis Porter and Big K.R.I.T., along with “Big Boi Shit” featuring former Boss Hogg Outlawz member Killa Kyleon. Preseason 2 will highlight Marcus Manchild’s undeniable lyrical escalation and drum anticipation for his next full-length project. In the midst of all of this music, Marcus is also part of the The Smokers Club Tour alongside the legendary Method Man, and featuring hard-hitting new talent like Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y, and Paypa. With his AMG team behind him and Preaseason 2 ahead, The Space God’s SPACEDOUT movement will take you to another galaxy.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:50am - 1:10am @ Treasure Island (416 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

Hailing from North Oakland, California, Squadda B and MondreM.A.N. of Main Attrakionz have been rapping together for most of their young lives. Early on, a shared love of rap music led them to put school on the back-burner and focus on producing music with a talented crew of local artists. Over the ensuing 7+ years, (and with an added assist from the world wide web and social media) Main Attrakionz have cultivated a unique and passionate sound, combining opaque atmospherics and lived-in reality rhymes, that stands as one of the most interesting and refreshing in the crowded and fractured world of today’s rap underground.

Cowboy and Indian
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:30am @ The Bat Bar (218 E 6th St)

The rootsy trio began when Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) got together with Jesse Plemons to write their first song. The collaboration took off and before long the pair was drawing major buzz at SXSW. Daniel James (frontman of SF based "Leopold and His Fiction") soon joined the band to complete the trio.
“We came together out of nowhere and were immediately inspired by one another,” Mills said. The band put that inspiration to work by recording their first song, “Hurt My Pride.” With James in San Francisco and Mills and Plemons in Austin, the bulk of the song was written over the phone. Yet when it came time to record, the chemistry was obvious to all. “We tracked the song as soon as we arrived in San Francisco,” James said, “and did it from the ground up, recording in living rooms, bedrooms and closets.”
The band is currently working on their first full-length album, produced by James and due out this spring. They recently recorded their video "Hurt My Pride” (featured on taste-maker blog Baybridged.com) while on their cross-country tour, using playful footage captured in Chicago and on the banks of Lake Michigan. The band’s song “Trouble Tracks” was recently featured in an episode of the NBC hit series Parenthood.

Night Beats
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:40am @ Buffalo Billiards (201 E 6th St)

Any number of bands cite 60’s Texas psych as an influence, but rarely does a group actually capture what made those bands special. Following their debut EP also on Trouble In Mind, The Night Beats have expanded on the bedroom immediacy of their first recordings to create an LP that perfectly captures and modernizes the hallucinogenic and exhilaratingly demonic aura of bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and Golden Dawn. With blazing guitar work and a razor sharp rhythm section Danny Lee Blackwell and company mutate conventional chords & progressions into a mind-blowing sonic sprawl. The record reels you in with 2-3 minute pop songs like ‘Ain’t Dumbo’ and ‘Dial 666', forging a landscape that then throws you into a chaotic journey of jams a’la ‘Dewayne’s Drone’ and ‘Little War in the Midwest’ that bend and meander but never overstay their welcome. During 6 solid months of touring already in 2011 the band performed several or more memorable gigs with The Black Lips (midwest-east coast), Wooden Shjips (west coast) & The Black Angels (all european tour dates).

Formed in 2009 the Brazilian indie-punk quintet, Some Community, who once called itself a girl group now finds itself with a much stronger lineup. Although the three original ladies, Veronica Vacaro (Keys), Juliana Vacaro (vocals), and Gabriela Gonzalez (guitar), are still stealing the spotlight, they're now accompanied by two strong gentlemen (especially when it comes to carrying their heavy cases). The Korg keyboard of Veronica Vacaro alone weighs 70 lbs, while Juliana Vacaro's lead vocals weigh approximately 1 ton.

Purity Ring
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:45am @ Chevrolet Sound Garage (612 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Megan James and Corin Roddick formed their "future pop" project Purity Ring only a year ago, but the duo have been musically active on their own for much longer. Originally from Edmonton, 23-year-old vocalist and trained pianist James started writing lyrics when she was 16. Twenty-year-old Roddick-- a former touring member of patchy electro outfit Gobble Gobble -- has drummed in various hometown bands since he was 14. But Purity Ring finds both members abandoning their live instruments in favor of stammering beats and pitched-down vocals derived from Roddick's love of Southern hip-hop.
The pair have only released 3 songs thus far "Ungirthed", and "Lofticries" and "Belispeak". On all three tracks, James' ghostly, Knife-like vocals are weaved into Roddick's skittering instrumentals, conveying an emotional and sonic disconnect-- fitting since their process involves Roddick sending his beats to James, who then adds her vocals. (The two live in different Canadian cities now, with Roddick stationed in Montreal and James in Halifax.)

With a poet uncle who lived off horse betting and hitchhiking, grandfathers who were spies, sailors, and test pilots, and over 500,000 miles of touring under his own belt, you have to wonder where the tales in Astronautalis’ music end and the life of Andy Bothwell begins. Currently settled (for now) in
Minneapolis, by way of Seattle, by way of Dallas by way of Jacksonville Beach, FL; Bothwell has spent almost every waking
moment of the last 7 years, on the road, playing shows, earning scars, collecting/giving tattoos, grinding out a cult like fan base, and living up to his proud, storied, and whiskey soaked blood line.

Bare Wires
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Beauty Bar (617 E. Seventh St. Austin, TX)

Bare Wires patent their own brand of electrified garage punk, fusing glam glitter pop with garage punk grime, producing a sound that has been called everything from “Soft Punk” to “Leather Jacket Rock”. The Oakland-based trio started in 2007 as a side project of Matthew Melton with the release of a crude garage punk single entitled “Voodoo Doll”, released on European label Solid Sex Lovie Doll. Adding his own analog recording system into the mix in search of a rawer sound, Melton continued to record under the name Bare Wires, releasing the Artificial Clouds LP on Tic Tac Totally in 2009. With solid mid-fi production and a minimalist aesthetic, Artificial Cloudsdisposed the jagged, proto-punk edges of the previous recordings and moved towards a smoother, hook-laden, but no less scrappy sound. Bare Wires new “smooth punk” aesthetic was expressed on the Let Down 7″ (Milk n Herpes), a dirty, sleazy pair of fuzz-doused songs with guitars ripping through a crunching amplifier on a hazy cloud of smoke. With their latest album, Cheap Perfume, Melton delivers ten stadium-ready tracks of glam-infused, rock n’ roll gems, still remaining true to the sincerity and authenticity that has become his songwriting trademark.

Beth Rowley
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Creekside at Hilton Garden Inn (500 N IH 35)
Beth Rowley was born in Peru, raised in Bristol and after college in Brighton began a stunning career as a singer songwriter that saw her sign to Universal Music for the world, release her debut album ‘Little Dreamer’ which climbed the UK charts and produced a series of hit songs. The songs were ‘A listed’ at Radio 2 and the album reached number 6 in the charts. Named as Keira Knightley’s favourite singer, “Beth Rowley makes me happy just listening to her”, following providing the title track for the ‘Edge of Love’ film, which was followed by an appearance in the film ‘An Education’ where she again provided the title music, Beth Rowley has won the hearts and minds of many the world over. Beth has appeared on stage with some giants of the music world performing with Burt Bacharach at the Electric Proms, David Arnold (James Bond), as Angelo Badalamenti's personal guest (David Lynch's right hand man) at Ghent film Festival and, at Willie Nelsons 4th July Back Yard Festival in Austin with Ray Wylie Hubbard.
Heavily influenced by blues, gospel and Americana music, Beth has a stunning and unique voice that has been acclaimed the world over, and having taken a break to write new songs with Ron Sexsmith, Ed Harcourt and others she is back to play a few select shows ahead of new releases in 2012.

Bosco Delrey
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Buca Lounge (422 Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78701)
Bosco Delrey, producer and purveyor of experimental pop and rock n roll, spent early 2011 playing in support of like-minded, genre-blurring acts Sleigh Bells and CSS, previewing his debut LP, Everybody Wah, for crowds across the United States. Hailing from New Jersey by way of Memphis, Bosco's production and musicianship reference the sounds of Sun Studios-era recordings, southern rap, church hymns and dancehall, updating lo-fi guitar twang with pop beats and vintage synthesizers to create a wall of distorted dance-grunge. This seemingly impossible alchemy first materialized in late 2010 with a pair of stellar 7-inches, "Wild One/Evil Lives" and "Space Junky/My My Racecar" released on Diplo's Mad Decent imprint, both of which are also available digitally.
The finishing touches of the predominantly bedroom-produced Everybody Wah were recorded in the summer of 2010 at the acclaimed Memphis, TN studio of Doug Easley (White Stripes, Sonic youth, Pavement, Wilco, Cat Power). The record sees the crystallization of what Los Angeles's KCRW has called "perfectly surreal pop beat troubadourism for modern America....Hopeful, absurd, shambolic, catchy, and lean....great for singing along while tearing your bills and job applications into party confetti!"

Cancer Bats
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto)

January 24, 2012 – Toronto, ON) Two-time JUNO-nominated CANCER BATS will release their fourth full-length album Dead Set On Living, on April 17, 2012 through Distort Inc. in Canada. Once again utilizing the legendary Vespa Studios and producers Eric Ratz and Kenny Luong, Dead Set On Living is undeniably the most metal-tinged offering the band has released to date, bringing yet another dimension to the Bats’ signature sound.

“We really strived for that raw, off-the-floor vibe this time around,” begins Cancer Bats vocalist Liam Cormier. “It’s really the bridge between our live show and what we put on record.”

Tracks like “R.A.T.S.” (Featuring guest vocals from Rob Urbinati of Sacrifice) and “The Void” are laced with the gritty, sludgy groove that first emerged on cuts from 2008’s Hail Destroyer, while the blistering first single “Old Blood” roars with the riot-inducing speed and aggression so familiar to the band’s fans. The blazing “Bastards!” also features vocal boosts from DevilDriver’s Dez Fafara and An Horse’s Kate Cooper. “We’ve been very lucky to experiment as much as we have,” Cormier offers, crediting the band’s loyal following for their fortune. “I love that we can have thrash songs, hardcore songs, and the more Queens of the Stone Age or Kyuss kind of groove-based tunes.”

Thematically, the album offers a strong focus on the bilateral relationship of dark and light, destruction and construction, life and death. The title track, for example, refers to a close friend of the band who ended up in the hospital in serious condition; only to have the experience cement his will to survive. “Road Sick,” as the title may imply, finds Cormier struggling with the hardships that come with a career spent on the road. “Our lives are all about touring, but that song is more universal,” Cormier reveals. “It’s really for anyone away from their loved ones, dealing with that situation.”

Still, whereas 2010’s Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones had a much darker tinge, DSOL strikes a tighter balance between the opposing forces and brings listeners closer to the light at the end of the tunnel by encouraging them to push through peril. “We all reach these dark places where we feel angry or alone,” says the singer, “but that gives us a reason to pick ourselves up and strive to make something better.”

Since first turning heads with 2006’s Birthing The Giant, the Cancer Bats, made up of Liam Cormier (vocals), Scott Middleton (Guitar), Mike Peters (drums) and Jaye Schwarzer (bass) are one of the hardest working bands in the music industry. The band spent close to 300 days away from home in 2011, and will likely come close to that in 2012.

Cancer Bats recently revealed to fans that on April 21, 2012 in London, UK, they would play six shows in five different venues, all within the span of 24 hours. Dubbed the ‘Pentagram’ tour (the location of the venues when joined together form the shape of a pentagram), all six shows sold out in the first week. A spring cross-Canada tour in support ofDSOL is in the works, with dates to be announced soon.

I came to Texas on a whim more than a decade ago. To a kid born and raised in New York, arriving in Texas felt like visiting a foreign country. I lived in the Hill Country for a summer but I knew Austin was the place to be. After a few more years of moving around out west I came back and settled there in 2000. After playing solo shows around town for a while, I had the great fortune of being asked to join Spoon in 2004. Since then I've toured the world playing keys, guitar and the occasional tambourine. In 2008 I met my fiancé and musical collaborator, Ariel Saldivar, and moved to Dallas, which I like to think of as a distant suburb of Austin. Last year I completed a solo record with the help of some great musicians, including members Spoon and Monahans, Charlie Sexton, Jon Sanchez, Hank Roberts and Daniel Hart.

But their band room happens to be located in a trailer tucked just inside Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on gorgeous Key Biscayne, FL. Just a few feet from their amps: tropical paradise. This is an area home to weird animals and buttonwood trees, located on an island just outside of Miami. “Miami is not known for producing many good bands,” bassist Danny Gonzalez concedes. “So, quite frequently we get asked, ‘would you ever consider moving?’ Our answer is always, ‘No!’ This is where our friends and family are from. Miami is such a part of the Jacuzzi Boys, as important as any musical influence.”

The Great Despiser, the new album from celebrated singer-songwriter Joe Pug, will be released April 24 on Lightning Rod Records. This is the follow-up to Pug’s critically acclaimed full-length debut, Messenger (2010), and his wildly popular word-of-mouth EP, Nation of Heat (2008). Of the music, NPR Music praises, “Not only does Chicago-based singer have a beautifully mature voice, but the lyrics on Pug’s debut EP, Nation of Heat, possess wisdom seemingly beyond his age. Pair that with his powerful songwriting and it's nearly impossible to avoid drawing comparisons between Pug and folk legends like Bob Dylan or contemporaries like Josh Ritter.”
The 11-track album was recorded in Chicago with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Califone, etc). In addition to Pug, the album features various acclaimed musicians, including Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim) on piano, organ and marimba as well as backing vocals from The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn on the album’s title track.

He has created a genre called "lit-hop", where he writes songs about classic Edgar Allan Poe and William Shakespeare works. He just played the entire Vans Warped Tour followed by an eight week club run. His new album is called "Lars Attacks!" and just came out on Lars's own label Horris Records. Unconcerned with a world obsessed with categorization as a means of definition, Tigran aka MiM0SA crafts music for its own sake, defying expectations with genre bending soundscapes. MiMOSA recently released his album Sanctuary on his own label, False Idol Music. The album has some incredible textures, tones and is brilliantly produced, with comparisons to Massive Attack bring made. Blessed with an abundance of talent and an ear for sonic experimentation, this fan-favorite has quickly developed a name for himself as one of the West Coast’s top exports. And the word is spreading fast. To say that MiM0SA is on the rise is to miss the mark. Rather, MiM0SA has arrived.

MORNING PARADE ANNOUNCE ASTRALWERKS DEBUT WITH SINGLE “HEADLIGHTS” TO BE RELEASED MARCH 13TH, 2012

LIVE DATES CONFIRMED AS SPECIAL GUESTS OF THE KOOKS IN ADDITION TO SXSW PERFORMANCES

SET TO COLLABORATE WITH ASPIRING FILMMAKERS TO CREATE NEW MUSIC VIDEO

(February 16th, 2012) - Hailing from Essex, England, Morning Parade is proud to announce the release of their debut single on March 13th via Astralwerks as well as live tour dates in March as special guests of The Kooks and SXSW live dates. This release will be preceded by a competition in partnership with cutting-edge global social contest platform, Talenthouse, to create a brand new music video for the band’s upcoming single “Headlights.“

This single will be released digitally on March 13th but will also appear on their brand new, limited edition, numbered E.P., The Hated & The Loved, to be made exclusively available via MorningParade.com and at the band’s live shows. Check out the brand new video for “Us & Ourselves” from the E.P here. Their full-length album will be released this summer.

Since causing waves of excitement with the UK release of their limited edition first single “Under the Stars”, Morning Parade’s star has been steadily on the rise. Heavily tipped at the beginning of 2011, Morning took their time to write songs they wanted to make whilst building a solid and loyal fanbase all across Europe thanks to their extensive touring schedule.

2011 saw the band selling out UK and European headline tours, playing to packed out tents at V Festival, touring with the likes of 30 Seconds to Mars, The Wombats and The Kooks, supporting Biffy Clyro at Ibiza Rocks and sharing a stage with Coldplay at Rock am Ring.

The band is inviting film-makers to create their own music videos for “Headlights”. The winning submission, chosen by the band using Facebook and Twitter public votes as a guide will be announced on April 2nd, and will become the official music video for the upcoming single.

A “People’s Choice” winner will also be selected via a public vote and will win a Canon Digital Camera and an EMI merchandise bag.

Talenthouse, the cutting edge social contest platform, identifies and compensates artists through life-changing creative contests. In just two years, Talenthouse has developed more than 200 creative invites enabling submitting artists and hosts to virally grow their audiences and generate reach in Facebook and Twitter.

Quote from Emma Trant, Global Partnerships Director: “We are extremely excited to offer aspiring music video and film-makers the chance to collaborate with Morning Parade and Astralwerks. Talenthouse aims to offer life changing opportunities to creatives and we recognize this as an important opportunity for anyone wanting to take a step into this realm”

“We love all the ideas and campaigns we have seen on Talenthouse and are excited to partner in this promotion to uncover an amazing video for our song!”, said lead singer Steve Sparrow.

Paper Route
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St)

Here’s the situation. In Nashville, there’s an old, decrepit plantation house where three bedraggled but refined, white gentlemen drop beats, craft wordplay, design artwork, and arrange orchestral maneuvers in the dark. The structure is called Joy Mansion, and the men who dwell there staring each other down and exercising their creative rivalry for all it’s worth collaborate under the moniker of Paper Route. Having toured relentlessly with the likes of Passion Pit and mewithoutyou, won hearts and minds with their debut album Absence (2009), paid musical tribute to Lou Reed to the man’s imperturbable face at South by Southwest, and insinuated themselves into pop culture consciousness when their song, “The Music,” appeared in the film (500) Days of Summer, Paper Route have now seen fit to go for broke on the possibility that epic earnestness, lyrical depth, and poetic heft can all coincide within one ridiculously catchy song collection primarily preoccupied with—wait for it–tragedy, disappointment, and loss. Behold The Peace of Wild Things.

The Drums
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Stage On Sixth Patio (508 E 6th Street)

Emerging from Brooklyn via Florida in 2009, The Drums initially caught the ear of the indie world with their Summertime! EP. It was an escapist collection of beach pop fantasies; tracks suffused with a wistful, longing nostalgia that never pandered to cheap sentimentality. Their rise, particularly in the UK, was meteoric. Early buzz led to a prestigious spot on the BBC Sound of 2010 shortlist, followed in short succession by a slot on the Shockwaves NME Tour in 2009, and the publication’s Phillip Hall Radar Award in early 2010, well before the album’s release that summer.

This Will Destroy You
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ Swan Dive (615 Red River St)

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU began in earnest during the mid-00’s in San Marcos, TX. In many ways, the initial sound of the band was the logical destination point for four friends (Christopher Royal King, Jeremy Galindo, Raymond Brown, and Andrew Miller) that had been playing in a variety of bands together throughout their teens. In 2005, the group began writing and recording what was intended to be a simple 6-song documentation of where they were at musically. Externally, Brown had been accepted into medical school, King was working on high profile graphic design gigs, and the four genuinely thought that they’d be moving into other fields, ultimately requiring the dissolution of the band.

Loud, hairy, and unpredictable, Three Blind Wolves are four young Glaswegians delivering country rock with a razor sharp edge. Drawing influences from Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and even Led Zeppelin, the boys have sold out venues across Scotland with their wild stage presence, transfixing harmonies and captivating performance. The band released mini-album Sound of the Storm on Communion Records in March 2011 to critical acclaim, with track Emily Rose bagging a well-deserved place on the July MOJO magazine cover CD and sealing their soaring momentum with a coveted place on the BBC Introducing stage at T in the park 2011 and securing slots at major Showcase Festivals Eurosonic, SXSW and CMW.

She is the most loved and most hated of her generation of punks, a new breed of bad girl branded by the slogan: IDGAF or I DONT GIVE A FUCK. She started a party in 2009 called GHE20G0TH1K which merges opposite spectrums of sound: the hood, the internet, the gangster, the nerd, the dancer, the goddess and beyond. It is locally recognized as "the best party in NYC" by the FADER, New York Magazine and Village Voice among others.

Wet Hair
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00am - 1:50am @ The Whiskey Room (503 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Wet Hair is Shawn Reed, Justin Thye, and Ryan Garbes, the two remaining members of Raccoo-oo-oon that stayed in Iowa City after the band’s end. Reed also runs Night-People Records, which Garbes often contributes to. Wet Hair began as a solo outing for Reed in late 2007 during the final months of Raccoo-oo-oon, and after the release of a 12” EP and the Irifi Cassette Garbes was added on organ and live drums. Wet Hair has evolved over time shifting the bands sound steadily towards a more refined pop sensibility. An experimental attitude and psychedelic atmosphere still prevails in Wet Hair’s music and the core instrumentation of the band has largey stayed consitent throughout with Reed on vocals, synth, drum machine, + tapes and Garbes on live drums, + synth/organ.

Christeene
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:10am - 1:50am @ The Iron Bear (121 W 8th St, Austin, TX 78701)
CHRISTEENE has been characterized as being a sexually infused sewer of live rap and vile shamelessness, capable of adapting amazingly well to all styles of music.
Attempts at gathering personal information on CHRISTEENE concerning age, origin, race, religion and even gender have proven fruitless, leaving the public to rely primarily on a highly stylized collection of music videos released through the singer’s collaborative efforts with award winning filmmaker and cinematographer, PJ Raval...who remains silent on the subject of their relationship.
It is noted that CHRISTEENE commands a stage presence of furious intensity accompanied by a strict regiment of hardcore dance and destructive choreography. The singer's impressive sound arsenal showcases a wide range of musical appreciation and mastery ranging from Electro to R&B, Hip Hop to Dub Step, with titles including 'Fix My Dick', 'Tears From My Pussy', 'African Mayonnaise’ and ‘Bustin’ Brown’. These songs, written by the artist, offer an intimate and fascinating glimpse into the private and sometimes heartbreaking experiences of this talented nightmare.
Reports from live shows describe scenes involving butt plugs tied to bouquets of balloons being released into the air from CHRISTEENE's arse, intimate and bizarre confessionals over tea, backup boys in handmade Panda masks urinating on canvas sacks containing the singer, and a DIY anti-fashion wardrobe styled from the forgotten scraps of society. Appearing alongside CHRISTEENE are two sexually distinct Backup Boyz, T-Gravel and C-Baby, along with accompanying DJ/ music producer, JJ Booya, rumored to be the entertainer's third cousin.
Multiple sightings of CHRISTEENE have been documented in AUSTIN, TX – South by Southwest 2010/11, Queerbomb, Homoscope. SAN FRANCISCO – Folsom Street Fair, Trannyshack, Bearracuda, SomeThing, Hard French, Homo-a-go-go. LOS ANGELES – Bears in Space, Shits n Giggles, Big Fat Dick, The Wildness. NEW YORK CITY – The ‘F’ Word, Greenhouse. PORTLAND – Blowpony/ Portland Pride. NEW ORLEANS – The Hook Up w/ Big Freedia, Bearracuda. PARIS – ‘Spotlight Club’ w/ fashion designer Rick Owens and Michele Lamy. STOCKHOLM – ‘Slick’ at the Sodra Teatern. BERLIN – Ficken 3000.
The singer’s music videos have been showcased in the film festivals of: SXSW, Rooftop Films, Paris Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, CFMDC's Queer City Cinema's Tour "Wide Open Wide", Homo-a-go-go, Prince George lesbian and gay film festival, Regina gay and lesbian film festival, and the International Short Film Festival/ Detmold…to name a few.
It should be noted that CHRISTEENE's music, media and live shows have cast an unprecedented net over a demographic including married men, dykes, queers, single women, bears, fraternity brothers, motor hogs, and people of the medical profession; clearly signifying a rapidly growing pandemic on popular culture as we know it.
The debut album from CHRISTEENE, 'Waste Up, Kneez Down', is set to be released in early 2012, fresh off the heels of the EP 'Soldier of Pleasure', which is currently on sale at christeene.org.

Killa Kyleon
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:10am - 1:50am @ Kiss & Fly (404 Colorado St)
Born and raised in Houston, Texas (Southside) and killing with some of the illest bars in the rap game. He’s better known as Killa Kyleon. Receiving his name Kyleon from Houston underground legend Big Pokey and being a product of the legendary Houston collective Screwed Up Click, headed by DJ Screw. He began his career at a young age, building his name in the Houston underground rap scene. While making noise in the area, Killa caught the attention of Slim Thug and his Boss Hogg Outlawz imprint. Impressed by his talent on the mic, Killa began his long path and friendship alongside Slim Thug, steering the ship of the Boss Hogg Outlawz movement as the follow-up artist to the labels flagship artist. Though well known in the H-Town quarters, regionally, and being featured on the nationally released Boss Hogg Outlawz Compilations, Killa began to breakaway from Boss Hogg and decided to take control of his future and leave his label after many years and move forward as a independent artist. With his master plan in place, Killa wasted no time in and showing the Hip-Hop world that Houston still has talent and lyricism down in the Lone Star State. Beginning his movement, he featured on Wiz Khalifa’s Kush & OJ with the infectious record Spotlight. He has released mixtapes with DJ Drama: Natural Born Killa and his Candy Paint and Texas Plates series 1 & 2. As well as many critically acclaimed features with many of today's biggest artist and his own freestyles. Killa Kyleon easily stands out as one of the best and most diverse artists in the Texas area and as veteran in this rap game, first as a supporting player and now as the featured act. Killa Kyleon is finally ready to make a personal statement of his own. “RUN IT” is a testament to his hard work and creative personal vision.

Thee Oh Sees
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:10am - 1:50am @ Beauty Bar Backyard (617 E 7th St)

What’s the first thing you think of when someone mentions Thee Oh Sees? Probably their riot-sparking live show, right? Visions of a guitar-chewing, melody-maiming John Dwyer careening across your cranium, rounded out by a wild-eyed wrecking crew that drives every last hook home like it’s a nail in the coffin of what you thought it meant to make 21st century rock ’n’ roll?
Yeah, that sounds about right. But it misses a more important point—how impossible Thee Oh Sees have been been to pin down since Dwyer launched it in the late ‘90s as a solo break from such sorely missed underground bands as Pink and Brown and Coachwhips. (While Dwyer still records songs on his own, Thee Oh Sees is now a five-piece featuring keyboardist/singer Brigid Dawson, guitarist Petey Dammit, drummer Mike Shoun, and multi-instrumentalist/singer Lars Finberg.)

Enlightened by the most unhinged charters of Acid Archives and Killed by Death alumnus, the Puffies' sound might best be described as embodying the Stooges' Raw Power if your pretty face had gone to hell. There, it would have encountered (among others) White Boy and The Average Rat Band, Tampax, Opus and Mag Amplitude for an eternal damnation of scarred depravity, the excesses of which would be legendary even by Hades standards. -Siltbreeze

Ume
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:20am - 1:55am @ Trinity Hall (401 E 6th St, Austin, TX 78701)

At the front of the stage, Lauren Larson wrangles her guitar. She bends the strings, attacks chords, her fingers blurred as they feverishly travel up and down the neck doling out lick after melodic lick while her hair whips and spins and she explodes with each blast of the drummer’s crashing cymbals. On stage, the unassuming 5-foot-2 frontwoman towers, rendered gargantuan by the ferocity of her guitar work and the propulsive power of her band Ume (pronounced ooo-may). Conjuring deft arpeggios and spacey solos from her electric with an unbridled intensity, Lauren’s electrifying energy stirs up the sonic cyclone released by the Austin-based noise rock trio anchored by her husband Eric Larson’s growling, rumbling bass and their new powerhouse drummer Rachel Fuhrer’s hard-hit thundering rhythms. Call it intelligent punk, meticulous garage rock, or hyperactive shoegaze, the music of Ume is an amped-up soundstorm emboldened by contradictions.

Known internationally as a curator amongst the world’s most cutting edge DJs, producers, and musical movements Wesley Pentz (better known as DIPLO) has experienced a variety of successes. The last few years have been spent running through the club circuit and having chart-topping hits with refreshing irreverence. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1978, Pentz spent most his childhood in Florida working in his fathers bait shop and being turned onto music thru then new mediums like MTV. Drifting North thru the state came Miami Bass and from the West came the sounds of Southern Hip Hop artists. The musical influence and variety coalesced and at 18 Pentz moved to Philadelphia for college at Temple University to study Film & Music. While a student he took a job in the South Philadephia community as a social worker and created the influential Hollertronix club night, which was the beginning of his fledgling career as DIPLO.

King Kelly
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 12:24pm @ Alamo Ritz 2 (320 East 6th St)

King Kelly is an aspiring internet star who performs webcam stripteases. When Kelly's car - filled with illegal narcotics that she must deliver - is stolen by her bitter ex-boyfriend on the 4th of July, Kelly and her best friend Jordan embark on an epic whirlwind of drugs, sex, violence and mischief-making as Kelly tries to reclaim what's hers. Kelly’s biggest online fan, a wayward State Trooper, joins the journey as the night spirals into chaos. Made entirely from camera-phone footage, "King Kelly" is a sensational journey through hedonistic American youth culture and the YouTube generation.

“Ballet dancers get dodgy feet from dancing and I get dodgy hands from making their shoes!” Ballet shoes may be worn by delicate girls, but they’re crafted by burly men whose hands tell another story... We delve into the world of professional ballet dancing seen through the eyes of a shoemaker who desperately strives to save the dancer as much pain as possible by making the shoes as well as he can. Meanwhile, a seasoned dancer talks of the pain she went through dancing at the highest level. An undiscovered world behind the pomp and perfection.

Hunky Dory
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 12:49pm @ Alamo Lamar B (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

In the summer of 1976, keen drama teacher Vivienne fights sweltering heat and general teenage apathy to put on an end of year music version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. To engage her students, she uses hits of the time, which will be performed by a fresh young cast. What emerges is a funny and tender tale reflecting the high school experience itself in which the kids’ voices add a particular poignancy and beauty to some familiar classic tunes, making the film a nostalgia trip for the older audience members and a fresh introduction to some classic pop to the younger cinema goers.

Live4ever Media is returning to the South By Southwest festival, and this year we are delighted to be presenting bands from both sides of the Atlantic at our unofficial party.

In 2011, Live4ever played host to a riotous celebration of brand new British rock n roll inside a packed out Antone’s in downtown Austin, with the likes of Pint Shot Riot, Twin Atlantic, Pulled Apart By Horses and co headliners The Boxer Rebellion and the Jim Jones Revue playing sets which emphatically proved the torch of UK guitar music is being carried in safe hands.

And now, Live4ever has opened its doors wider still to welcome some of the brightest new American and Irish talent to our showcase, as well as two of the UK’s most exciting young bands, on March 15th 2012.

With acts hailing from New York to Belfast, California to London, Live4ever’s Two Finger Salute II – housed this year at ND at 501 Studios – is sure to display all the worldwide diversity, intensity and quality which makes the South By Southwest festival such a unique event. All under one roof, and all on one unrivalled afternoon’s entertainment.

Sun Don't Shine
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:15am - 12:37pm @ Alamo Lamar A (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

"Sun Don't Shine" is a subtly cryptic story driven by the powerful performances of its lead actors and its eerily poetic setting. The film follows Crystal (Kate Lyn Sheil) and her boyfriend Leo (Kentucker Audley) on a tense and mysterious road trip through the desolate yet hauntingly beautiful landscape of central Florida. As the couple travels up the Gulf Coast the disturbing details of their excursion gradually begin to emerge, revealing Crystal’s sinister past and the couple’s troubling future.

Eating Alabama
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:30am - 12:32pm @ Alamo Lamar C (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

In search of a simpler life, a young couple returns home to Alabama where they set out to eat the way their grandparents did – locally and seasonally. But as their new diet forces them to navigate the agricultural industrial complex, they soon realize that nearly everything about the food system has changed since farmers once populated their family histories. A thoughtful and often funny essay on community, the South and sustainability, "Eating Alabama" is a story about why food matters.

The Oyster Princess (1919) with live score by Bee vs. Moth
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00pm - 1:00pm @ Alamo Ritz 1 (320 East 6th St)

When spoiled Ossi hears that her friend has married a count, her father promises to buy her a prince. The ensuing temper tantrums and mistaken identities make a comic mockery of Ossi’s moneyed world. From 1919, this film represents director Ernst Lubitsch’s early Berlin-era silent comedies, and it revels in lush, intricate sets and absurdly choreographed parades of servants. Austin jazz/rock band Bee vs. Moth performs their original score live with the film. The band’s unique blend of influences as diverse as Charles Mingus and Television makes a rollicking accompaniment for this classic film. www.beevsmoth.com

Nudie Jeans and indie music purveyors Death & Taxes hit Austin during SxSW to present ‘East End’ – a 2 day pop-up shop and multi artist showcase in East Austin.

The entrance to Cheer Up Charlie's will be transformed by the installation of a wooden cabana-style shop showcasing the eco-conscious denim brand.

Open March 15–16, 12pm–8pm, the shop will carry a tightly curated range of unisex organic denim and organic tops from the Spring Summer 2012 collection. Commemorating the Austin launch, a limited edition “Keep It Weird” (referring to Austin’s slogan ‘Keep Austin Weird’) printed organic tee-shirt will be free with every denim purchase, or available for purchase at $25. Furthermore, all sales from limited edition tee-shirts will be donated to Austin Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization which supports local musicians with educational resources. Also present will be iconic amplifier and headphones brand Marshall, with installed listening stations in the shop and exclusive headphones product available for purchase.

Artists performing at East End include Dirty Beaches, Caveman, Princeton, Dan Deacon, PAPA, Superhumanoids and more.

Complementing the organic product presented by Nudie Jeans, global leaders in water purification, Brita, will be onsite with hydration stations and reusable water bottles, to reduce plastic bottle wastage.

Morning Parade
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00pm - 1:50pm @ Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701)

Participants can learn more about this opportunity at http://www.talenthouse.com/create-music-video-for-morning-parade?tab=0.

Next Stage: Craft Spells
In the cold and dreary winter of 2009, alone in his bedroom and hidden
from the darkness of the world outside Justin Paul Vallesteros had begun
working on something that would change his life forever. What began as a
couple notes played in experimentation soon transformed into vibrant
melodies that soon shook Vallesteros’ musical foundation to the core.
Guitar chords laced over pulse sating synth melodies and drum rhythms
was a departure from Justin’s previous work; he began to create the
dreamy nostalgic pop music that is Craft Spells. Justin is a California native
who now finds residence in the mid-size town of Stockton, the heart of
California. Craft Spells is the epitome of the recent uprising of the DIY
music scene. Coming from a place not known for its musical history or
impact on music culture it seemed destined for Craft Spells to stay as a
bedroom pop project with no final destination in sight. But soon the shear
amount of blog volume his work began to generate was unimaginable.
Sites like Weekly Tape Deck, Pasta Primavera, No Modest Bear and
Pitchfork’s Forkcast took notice and thus began the never ending
worldwide posting and re-posting on blog after blog of Craft Spells. The
sound is led by Justin’s blissful voice, backed behind beautiful guitar
melodies over heavenly synths, pop basslines and looped rhythms.
Captured Tracks has released 7” single for the song “Party Talk” and
the debut LP in Spring 2011 called Idle Labor. 2011 is
