Diplo
    Thursday March 15, 2012 TBA - TBA @ 1100 Warehouse (1100 E 5th st, Austin, TX )
Known internationally as a curator amongst the world’s most cutting edge DJs, producers, and musical movements Wesley Pentz (better known as DIPLO) has experienced a variety of successes. The last few years have been spent running through the club circuit and having chart-topping hits with refreshing irreverence. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1978, Pentz spent most his childhood in Florida working in his fathers bait shop and being turned onto music thru then new mediums like MTV. Drifting North thru the state came Miami Bass and from the West came the sounds of Southern Hip Hop artists. The musical influence and variety coalesced and at 18 Pentz moved to Philadelphia for college at Temple University to study Film & Music. While a student he took a job in the South Philadephia community as a social worker and created the influential Hollertronix club night, which was the beginning of his fledgling career as DIPLO.

King Kelly
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 12:24pm @ Alamo Ritz 2 (320 East 6th St)

King Kelly is an aspiring internet star who performs webcam stripteases. When Kelly's car - filled with illegal narcotics that she must deliver - is stolen by her bitter ex-boyfriend on the 4th of July, Kelly and her best friend Jordan embark on an epic whirlwind of drugs, sex, violence and mischief-making as Kelly tries to reclaim what's hers. Kelly’s biggest online fan, a wayward State Trooper, joins the journey as the night spirals into chaos. Made entirely from camera-phone footage, "King Kelly" is a sensational journey through hedonistic American youth culture and the YouTube generation.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 12:31pm @ Violet Crown 1 (434 W 2nd St)

“Ballet dancers get dodgy feet from dancing and I get dodgy hands from making their shoes!” Ballet shoes may be worn by delicate girls, but they’re crafted by burly men whose hands tell another story... We delve into the world of professional ballet dancing seen through the eyes of a shoemaker who desperately strives to save the dancer as much pain as possible by making the shoes as well as he can. Meanwhile, a seasoned dancer talks of the pain she went through dancing at the highest level. An undiscovered world behind the pomp and perfection.

Hunky Dory
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 12:49pm @ Alamo Lamar B (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

In the summer of 1976, keen drama teacher Vivienne fights sweltering heat and general teenage apathy to put on an end of year music version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. To engage her students, she uses hits of the time, which will be performed by a fresh young cast. What emerges is a funny and tender tale reflecting the high school experience itself in which the kids’ voices add a particular poignancy and beauty to some familiar classic tunes, making the film a nostalgia trip for the older audience members and a fresh introduction to some classic pop to the younger cinema goers.

    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:00am - 6:00pm @ ND at 501 Studios (501 I-35 (5th and Brushy))

Live4ever Media is returning to the South By Southwest festival, and this year we are delighted to be presenting bands from both sides of the Atlantic at our unofficial party.

In 2011, Live4ever played host to a riotous celebration of brand new British rock n roll inside a packed out Antone’s in downtown Austin, with the likes of Pint Shot Riot, Twin Atlantic, Pulled Apart By Horses and co headliners The Boxer Rebellion and the Jim Jones Revue playing sets which emphatically proved the torch of UK guitar music is being carried in safe hands.

And now, Live4ever has opened its doors wider still to welcome some of the brightest new American and Irish talent to our showcase, as well as two of the UK’s most exciting young bands, on March 15th 2012.

With acts hailing from New York to Belfast, California to London, Live4ever’s Two Finger Salute II – housed this year at ND at 501 Studios – is sure to display all the worldwide diversity, intensity and quality which makes the South By Southwest festival such a unique event. All under one roof, and all on one unrivalled afternoon’s entertainment.

Sun Don't Shine
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:15am - 12:37pm @ Alamo Lamar A (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

"Sun Don't Shine" is a subtly cryptic story driven by the powerful performances of its lead actors and its eerily poetic setting. The film follows Crystal (Kate Lyn Sheil) and her boyfriend Leo (Kentucker Audley) on a tense and mysterious road trip through the desolate yet hauntingly beautiful landscape of central Florida. As the couple travels up the Gulf Coast the disturbing details of their excursion gradually begin to emerge, revealing Crystal’s sinister past and the couple’s troubling future.

Eating Alabama
    Thursday March 15, 2012 11:30am - 12:32pm @ Alamo Lamar C (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

In search of a simpler life, a young couple returns home to Alabama where they set out to eat the way their grandparents did – locally and seasonally. But as their new diet forces them to navigate the agricultural industrial complex, they soon realize that nearly everything about the food system has changed since farmers once populated their family histories. A thoughtful and often funny essay on community, the South and sustainability, "Eating Alabama" is a story about why food matters.

The Austin Chronicle recommends this event in "The Place Is the Thing:  The influence of Geography in a Quartet of Docs." Read the full feature here.

The Oyster Princess (1919) with live score by Bee vs. Moth
    Thursday March 15, 2012 12:00pm - 1:00pm @ Alamo Ritz 1 (320 East 6th St)

When spoiled Ossi hears that her friend has married a count, her father promises to buy her a prince. The ensuing temper tantrums and mistaken identities make a comic mockery of Ossi’s moneyed world. From 1919, this film represents director Ernst Lubitsch’s early Berlin-era silent comedies, and it revels in lush, intricate sets and absurdly choreographed parades of servants. Austin jazz/rock band Bee vs. Moth performs their original score live with the film. The band’s unique blend of influences as diverse as Charles Mingus and Television makes a rollicking accompaniment for this classic film. www.beevsmoth.com

Nudie Jeans and indie music purveyors Death & Taxes hit Austin during SxSW to present ‘East End’ – a 2 day pop-up shop and multi artist showcase in East Austin.

The entrance to Cheer Up Charlie's will be transformed by the installation of a wooden cabana-style shop showcasing the eco-conscious denim brand.

Open March 15–16, 12pm–8pm, the shop will carry a tightly curated range of unisex organic denim and organic tops from the Spring Summer 2012 collection. Commemorating the Austin launch, a limited edition “Keep It Weird” (referring to Austin’s slogan ‘Keep Austin Weird’) printed organic tee-shirt will be free with every denim purchase, or available for purchase at $25. Furthermore, all sales from limited edition tee-shirts will be donated to Austin Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization which supports local musicians with educational resources. Also present will be iconic amplifier and headphones brand Marshall, with installed listening stations in the shop and exclusive headphones product available for purchase.

Artists performing at East End include Dirty Beaches, Caveman, Princeton, Dan Deacon, PAPA, Superhumanoids and more.

Complementing the organic product presented by Nudie Jeans, global leaders in water purification, Brita, will be onsite with hydration stations and reusable water bottles, to reduce plastic bottle wastage.

Morning Parade
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:00pm - 1:50pm @ Latitude 30 (512 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701)

(February 16th, 2012) - Hailing from Essex, England, Morning Parade is proud to announce the release of their debut single on March 13th via Astralwerks as well as live tour dates in March as special guests of The Kooks and SXSW live dates. This release will be preceded by a competition in partnership with cutting-edge global social contest platform, Talenthouse, to create a brand new music video for the band’s upcoming single “Headlights.“

This single will be released digitally on March 13th but will also appear on their brand new, limited edition, numbered E.P., The Hated & The Loved, to be made exclusively available via MorningParade.com and at the band’s live shows. Check out the brand new video for “Us & Ourselves” from the E.P here. Their full-length album will be released this summer.

Since causing waves of excitement with the UK release of their limited edition first single “Under the Stars”, Morning Parade’s star has been steadily on the rise. Heavily tipped at the beginning of 2011, Morning took their time to write songs they wanted to make whilst building a solid and loyal fanbase all across Europe thanks to their extensive touring schedule.

2011 saw the band selling out UK and European headline tours, playing to packed out tents at V Festival, touring with the likes of 30 Seconds to Mars, The Wombats and The Kooks, supporting Biffy Clyro at Ibiza Rocks and sharing a stage with Coldplay at Rock am Ring.

The band is inviting film-makers to create their own music videos for “Headlights”. The winning submission, chosen by the band using Facebook and Twitter public votes as a guide will be announced on April 2nd, and will become the official music video for the upcoming single.

A “People’s Choice” winner will also be selected via a public vote and will win a Canon Digital Camera and an EMI merchandise bag.

Talenthouse, the cutting edge social contest platform, identifies and compensates artists through life-changing creative contests. In just two years, Talenthouse has developed more than 200 creative invites enabling submitting artists and hosts to virally grow their audiences and generate reach in Facebook and Twitter.

Quote from Emma Trant, Global Partnerships Director: “We are extremely excited to offer aspiring music video and film-makers the chance to collaborate with Morning Parade and Astralwerks. Talenthouse aims to offer life changing opportunities to creatives and we recognize this as an important opportunity for anyone wanting to take a step into this realm”

“We love all the ideas and campaigns we have seen on Talenthouse and are excited to partner in this promotion to uncover an amazing video for our song!”, said lead singer Steve Sparrow.

Participants can learn more about this opportunity at http://www.talenthouse.com/create-music-video-for-morning-parade?tab=0.

Next Stage: Craft Spells
In the cold and dreary winter of 2009, alone in his bedroom and hidden
from the darkness of the world outside Justin Paul Vallesteros had begun
working on something that would change his life forever. What began as a
couple notes played in experimentation soon transformed into vibrant
melodies that soon shook Vallesteros’ musical foundation to the core.
Guitar chords laced over pulse sating synth melodies and drum rhythms
was a departure from Justin’s previous work; he began to create the
dreamy nostalgic pop music that is Craft Spells. Justin is a California native
who now finds residence in the mid-size town of Stockton, the heart of
California. Craft Spells is the epitome of the recent uprising of the DIY
music scene. Coming from a place not known for its musical history or
impact on music culture it seemed destined for Craft Spells to stay as a
bedroom pop project with no final destination in sight. But soon the shear
amount of blog volume his work began to generate was unimaginable.
Sites like Weekly Tape Deck, Pasta Primavera, No Modest Bear and
Pitchfork’s Forkcast took notice and thus began the never ending
worldwide posting and re-posting on blog after blog of Craft Spells. The
sound is led by Justin’s blissful voice, backed behind beautiful guitar
melodies over heavenly synths, pop basslines and looped rhythms.
Captured Tracks has released 7” single for the song “Party Talk” and
the debut LP in Spring 2011 called Idle Labor. 2011 is
going to be a busy year now that Justin has set up a live band for future
touring. Keep a look out for tour dates in Europe and US come the new
year. In no time at all, Justin has been able to move out of Dave Brubeck
and Pavement’s shadow to create something his own which he shares
with the ever continuing admiration of the world.”

Wildness
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:15pm - 2:29pm @ Violet Crown 1 (434 W 2nd St)

Rooted in the tropical underground of Los Angeles nightlife, "Wildness" is a portrait of the Silver Platter, a historic bar that has been home to Latin/LGBT immigrant communities since 1963. With a magical-realist flourish the bar itself becomes a character, narrating what happens when a weekly party (organized by Director Wu Tsang, DJs NGUZUNGUZU, and Total Freedom) called Wildness explodes into creativity and conflict. What does “safe space” mean? Who needs it? And how does it differ among us? At the Silver Platter, the search for answers creates coalitions across generations.

How Stella Got Her Masters Back: Reversion Rights

    From the Austin Chronicle:

Whether you're going through divorce, disease, or despair, Gloria Gaynor's worldwide disco smash "I Will Survive" is a triumphant anthem for all adversities. The song, written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris, recently became one of 25 recordings inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for 2012.

"It's still popular, it's still being played, and the record company is still making lots of money on that record, very little of which I am getting," says Gaynor.

That may soon change thanks to a provision in the 1976 Copyright Act that took effect in 1978, the year "I Will Survive" was released. Under the act, artists like Gaynor can reclaim ownership of their post-1977 master recordings after 35 years. That makes 2013 something of a zero hour in the music industry.

The issue of reversion rights still brings up more questions than answers. Congress didn't specify who constitutes an author of a sound recording, and the already reeling major labels aren't going to give up their lucrative back catalogs without a fight. The Recording Industry Association of America, which lobbies on behalf of labels, has argued that most recordings are works for hire and are therefore not subject to reversion.

Gaynor, who will provide her decidedly different take on the matter as a South by Southwest panelist, thinks Congress needs to step back in to protect artists' rights.

"We need to convince them that a recording is not a work for hire," she asserts. "The artist doesn't sing a song and then walk away, which is what a work for hire is.

"We're constantly out there promoting. If I hadn't been there singing 'I Will Survive' around the world and if I hadn't recorded it in the first place, it would not be constantly played and it would not be making money for the record companies. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever that I should be making a pittance from it while the record company makes all this money just because they put up the initial money."

Although Gaynor has not filed to reclaim ownership of her own master recordings, calling it "premature," her animosity toward labels isn't hard to discern.

"I see it as the record company having had their hands in the cookie jar for many, many years and now we're asking them to take it out," she says. "They see it as a loss. I see it as termination of a theft."

Woody Guthrie at 100

    From the Austin Chronicle:

Woody Guthrie had a sophisticated understanding of America. It was an education he earned empirically – through looking into a million faces and walking a thousand roads. Anybody with a pair of boots and a Bob Dylan CD can tell you that Guthrie came from Oklahoma, and much has been made of his time in California and New York, but it was his tenure in Texas that alchemized him as a songwriter and, in part, inspired the advent of modern protest music.

"I think his Texas history gets short-shrifted," says Douglas Brinkley, author, historian, and professor at Houston's prestigious Rice University. "Everybody talks about Woody Guthrie in Oklahoma, but his career as a troubadour began traveling around Texas."

    Nora Guthrie

It was in Pampa, an oil town in high plains Texas, where Guthrie experienced the Black Sunday dust storm and where he cut his teeth in the Corncob Trio and the Pampa Junior Chamber of Commerce Band. Brinkley points to his trips from the Permian Basin to the Rio Grande Valley and up to East Texas as significant.

"It was his travels all around the state that inspired him to think about how people could be helped more and gave him his social conscience," posits Brinkley.

Guthrie's daughter and guardian of his collections, Nora, views her father's lyrics as an account of his everlasting road trip.

"Woody was a journey," she says. "He is Oklahoma. He is Texas. He is California and he is New York. All his writing and lyrics are a journal of those places, but the pivotal point was Texas. That's where Dust Bowl Ballads came from, his first record and his first writing."

While music fans will always speculate what Lennon or Tupac would say about current issues, Guthrie's prolific songbook of more than 3,000 lyrics offers specifics. In them, Brinkley has found a unique context for Woody: "He's the protest poet to Texas land abusers." Guthrie's lyrics, Brinkley points out, contain warnings about big agriculture and oil companies torturing the land, and common people being exploited by huge corporations.

"Woody Guthrie is the perfect spokesperson for a lot of worries that rural Texans should have about the way things are happening right now."

Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:30pm - 2:36pm @ Alamo Lamar A (1120 South Lamar Blvd)
20 years after riots ripped through Los Angeles, "Uprising" documents how hip hop forecasted – and some say ignited – the worst civil unrest of the 20th century. The film revisits the riots in gripping detail and draws from a diverse collection of voices – the rappers, rioters, victims, police officers, journalists and everyday citizens of South Central Los Angeles. The documentary traces the rise of dissent in Los Angeles in the 80's and 90's and explores why citizens chose to rise up violently against police abuse and perceived injustices.

The Central Park Effect
    Thursday March 15, 2012 1:45pm - 2:45pm @ Alamo Lamar C (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

"The Central Park Effect" reveals the extraordinary array of wild birds who grace Manhattan’s celebrated patch of green and the equally colorful, full-of-attitude New Yorkers who schedule their lives around the rhythms of migration. Acclaimed author Jonathan Franzen, an idiosyncratic trombone technician, a charming fashion-averse teenager, and a bird-tour leader who’s recorded every sighting she’s made since the 1940s are among the film’s cast of characters. Featuring spectacular wildlife footage capturing the changing seasons, this lyrical documentary transports the viewer to a dazzling world that goes all but unnoticed by the 38 million people who visit the park each year.

    Lost in the Trees
A Church That Fits Our Needs
    Release Date: March 20, 2012

Lush  clusters  of  piano,  a  mysterious  sound  that  might  be  something  being  unwrapped,  or  paper  crushed  for  kindling,  and  A  Church  That  Fits  Our Needs,  the  second  album  by  North  Carolina  group  LOST  IN  THE  TREES,  is  underway,  announcing  itself  as  a  work  of  vaulting  ambition,  a  cathedral built on loss and transformation.  In the summer of 2009 Ari Picker – writer,
composer,  and  architect  of  the  band  –  lost  his  mother,  an  artist  in  her  own
right,  when  she  took  her  own  life.    Picker  was  in  the  midst  of  releasing  his  band’s  debut  album,  All  Alone  in  an  Empty  House,  a
collection  of  folk‐inflected  songs  that  surprised  with  its  orchestral  arrangements,  to  an  acclaim  usually  reserved  for  seasoned
veterans:  “both  heart  wrenching  and  beautiful,”  said  Paste,  while  the  Huffington  Post  called  the  album  “spellbinding  in  its  musical
ambition,  touching  in  its  intimacy,  and  often  overwhelming  in  its  emotional  honesty.”    Picker  took  the  loss  of  his  mother  and  set
about transforming the events into a tribute, composing, writing lyrics, his mother’s picture above his writing desk: the same picture
that  now  graces  the  album’s  cover.    “I  wanted  to  give  her  a  space,  in  the  music,  to  be,  and  to  become  all  the  things  she  didn’t  get  a  chance to be when she was alive.”

Natalia Lafourcade
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:00pm - 4:00pm @ Ballroom G Day Stage Austin Convention Center (500 E Cesar Chavez St.)
    Who is Natalia Lafourcade?
Artworks respond to a sum of experiences that inspired their creation. An artist endows them with his/her perceptions and reflections – consciously or unconsciously– through ideas that become alive. Hu Hu Hu is the result of the author's escape and the finding of her own self. Sometimes, it ́s good to forget who we are so we can discover ourselves again as if it were for the first time.
Natalia Lafourcade was exposed to music from the day she was born. Her father is a harpsichord player and her mother a classical music enthusiast who created a method for early music education, which she began to put in practice on her little daughter. After leaving in Jalapa, Veracrúz, her mother later founded a music school in Mexico City when Natalia was just nine years old. Being surrounded with music since her early childhood naturally drove her into it and eventually led her to compose her first songs.
Once in Mexico City she spent her free time in her mother ́s school, playing with the equipment, making songs, radio shows and a variety of home-made recordings using a Yamaha keyboard plugged to a double cassette stereo; applying the method herself.
When Natalia was ten years old, she developed a peculiar passion for mariachis and typical Mexican music... but music moves in mysterious ways, and maybe her use of brass or strings and the colors of her harmonies still draw from those first loves. At the age of 14 years old she became part of a pop girl-band that lasted three years, after all this work she realized that it was not what she wanted and decided to study music properly in a school called Fermatta. At first she began as a guitar player, then as a piano player and finally she switched to become a singer. Although she had already been singing for a long time, by then she got gigs performing hits of the 90s in weddings and pubs.
Everything changed for her after Fermatta, there she made friends who would show her tons of songs and artists she didn ́t know before like Björk, Jamiroquai, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, The Cardigans, Ella Fitzgerald, Radiohead & PJ Harvey, amongst others. This new music infected her composing, she would never be the same girl and musician again. A few months later she won a scholarship and went all the way to Berklee in Boston for a five week program of musical training; but she didn ́t speak English then, so she missed most of her classes and used the free pianos to practice, there she wrote about 25 songs and she later recorded a bunch of them in Mexico City with the help of a friend.
Three years later Sony Music offered her an opportunity to join a pop band (again), but she rejected it; she had become intent on making and singing her own music. However, getting to know the people in the record company (even to rebuke their offer) wasn't a bad idea, as it got her the chance to show them some demos. And, long story short, that ́s how she singed her first contract with Sony. Her eponymous first solo CD, Natalia Lafourcade, was thus published in 2002. The first single off it was "Busca un Problema" ("looking for trouble"). After the great success of this first record, and the experiences garnered by touring it, she had way too much to digest and think about, and she finally decided her next step would be to make her musicians a full part of her act, and to leave the limelight of the soloist position (partly) behind to form a band with them; calling themselves Natalia & The Fouquetina. This way the pleasure, as well as the pressure, would be rightfully shared.
The second record in Natalia ́s career and the first one with La Forquetina would be Casa (House), released by Sony in 2005. They toured, rehearsed, lived and surfed the waves of promotion and media exposure as a band; and after a while, they came to realize each member wanted different things for the future, and that the best for all of them was to separate.
At this point, Natalia had been working for five years straight; she made songs for films, for tributes, her own music and a whole lot of concerts all around the world. She was exhausted. She needed to find a place that could provide her some peace and freedom, somewhere she could take a break.
In 2006 she left to Canada where she planned to rest, study English and draw. Fortunately, things didn ́t happen exactly the way she expected; she stayed in a house full of musicians; lovers of folk, blues, french music and worldly fusions. She was not used to these new styles. It was all fresh and exciting to her, and once again, all these experiences and new horizons became an important influence to her through her most natural from of expression. And, so, before she knew it, she was already composing again.
One afternoon in a park, in Autumn, she got inspired by the falling of the leaves around her, to make an instrumental record about the faces of love. She wondered if it could be like a soundtrack to what we feel when immersed in the whole cycle of love. She jumped straight to it. The result was Las cuatro estaciones del amor (The Four Seasons of Love). Through this record she woke up to a new Natalia, she began to work very hard to be ready to record it with an orchestra when she returned to Mexico, in 2006. She would record it in the city of Jalapa, where she lived until she was nine years old.
While working in Las Cuatro Estaciones del Amor in Canada, she was so inpired she composed other 13 songs that would later became her fourth record Hu Hu Hu. Sony asked her to release Hu Hu Hu before, so she recorded it in Cuernavaca with Eduardo Bergallo (who has worked as an engineer with Soda Stereo, Cerati, and Juana Molina from Argentina) in a very organic and spontaneous manner.
Hu Hu Hu is about the journey of a little girl that goes through Natalia ́s experiences translated into fantasies and curious characters.
This piece or art is the discovery of her self, the recovery of personal losses, and the satisfaction of someone who never stops looking. That is what art is about, creating worlds with our own rules, where sense its like a subtle whisper... Hu Hu Hu.
During the Bicentennial Independence of Mexico celebrations, she was one of the few guests of honour to perform at the stage of the Angel, column on the main avenue in Mexico City, along with Alondra de la Parra, Ely Guerra and LoBlondo, delivering an outstanding performance.
On that same year, she was invited to perform with the Big Band Jazz Mexico, fulfilling one of her long time dreams. After this experience she decided to form a Jazz foursome and had a number of very successful shows in one of the most recognized venues in Mexico City. Also, this year she was invited to perform a secondary role on the movie "El cielo en tu mirada" ("Heaven in your eyes").
By now she is working on her new album.

Ximena Sarinana
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:00pm - 4:00pm @ Ballroom G Day Stage Austin Convention Center (500 E Cesar Chavez St.)

When Mexican vocalist Ximena Sariñana (hi-MEN-a sa-rin-YAH-na) released her debut solo album, Mediocre, in 2008, Rolling Stone gave it four stars and praised it as “one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.” Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for Sariñana, who had risen to fame in her homeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. “In Mexico, people believed in me as an artist,” says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she was confronted with a tough decision: “Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch and convince people that I’m worth it.” She chose the latter.

Morning Parade
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:15pm - 4:05pm @ Red Eyed Fly (715 Red River St Austin, TX)

Dreams of a Life
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:15pm - 4:46pm @ Violet Crown 1 (434 W 2nd St)
"Dreams of a Life" is an imaginative and multilayered quest to go beyond the newspaper reports and solve the mystery of who thirty-eight year old Joyce Vincent was and why she lay undiscovered for three years after her death in one of the busiest parts of London. Joyce Vincent died in her bedsit above Shopping City in Wood Green. Nobody noticed. Nearly three years later, her flat was forced into by authorities due to lack of rent payment. Her skeleton was found surrounded by Christmas presents that she was in the process of wrapping. Her television was still on.

In 1994 Korean-American teenager, Hyun Jae, went to a bar in New Mexico where a handsome young man posing as a firefighter offered her a ride home. Then she was abducted and smuggled into Las Vegas where she was imprisoned as a sex slave for two years. During her captivity, Hyun Jae (dubbed Eden by her captors) ensured her own survival by steadily carving out power and influence within the very organization that imprisoned her. Inspired by the complex and harrowing true story of human trafficking survivor Chong Kim, "Eden" peers into the darkest corners of America and attempts to discover the humanity within.

Grandma Lo-fi: The Basement Tapes of Sigrídur Níelsdóttir
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:45pm - 4:47pm @ Violet Crown 2 (434 W 2nd St)

At the tender age of 70 she started recording and releasing her own music straight from the living room. 7 years later she had 59 albums to her name with more than 600 songs – an eccentric myriad of catchy compositions mixing in her pets, found toys, kitchen percussions and Casio keyboards. Sigrídur Níelsdóttir is her name, and before long the Icelandic/Danish musician became an adored cult figure in the Icelandic music scene. Shot mostly on Super-8 and 16mm "Grandma Lo-fi" is a cinematic tribute to her boundless creativity, created by three musicians and artists whom she has inspired.

Graffiti6
    Thursday March 15, 2012 3:50pm - 4:30pm @ Speakeasy (412 Congress Ave.)

Colours, the debut album from Britain’s Graffiti6, is as vividly vibrant as both the project’s moniker and its album title suggest: an uncategorizable mélange of pop, psychedelia, R&B, and British Northern Soul that fully capitalizes on the soaring uplift of Jamie Scott’s emotionally transparent voice and gift for melody and TommyD’s irresistible rhythms and inventive production. Songs like “Stone In My Heart,” “Stare Into The Sun,” “Annie You Save Me,” and “Free” are “latter-day psych-soul nuggets, all phased vocals and sunshine melodies given the warp factor,” as London’s Guardian newspaper put it, while the remainder of Colours zigzags all over the musical map from the folk-soul balladry of “Goodbye Geoffrey Drake,” to the spare, gospel-inflected feel of “Over You,” to the downtempo sultriness of “Calm The Storm,” to the jangly indie-rock vibe of “Lay Me Down.” “For me, the unexpectedness of the sound is the whole point,” Scott says. “It’s fun to mess with people’s heads.”
