Creating Relationships That Matter
Successful business depends on successful relationships. While a social media strategy may contribute to success, it is never the primary reason for success or failure. Wherever you fall on the spectrum of many-to-many all the way to one-to-one, you need more than a social network. The interactions leading up to that “magical handshake” often occur behind the scenes, not on social media platforms. Converting contacts from your social network to your personal network creates the momentum that leads to lasting value. Better still, capitalizing on the orbital, or extended, networks of those in your personal network allows you to extend your reach beyond those whom you know to those whom you need to know…and those who stand to benefit from an awareness of you and what you have to offer. Organized, disciplined contact management that helps you make the most of the details you learn about people. In any field, those little details don’t mean a lot—they mean everything! Mike Muhney will share how to find opportunities to reach out to the people in your network—and the people in their networks—in ways that offer true value to others. He’ll provide practical tips on making your personal networks, well, personal.

#Kony2012: What Does 70+ Million Views Mean?
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ AT&T Conference Hotel (Salon A) (1900 University Ave, Austin, TX 78705)

The recent campaign film on Uganda by Invisible Children - 'Kony 2012' calling for the arrest of war criminal Joseph Kony has had a dramatic reach unseen for any previous human rights video online. Within one week it has been seen over 70 million times on YouTube. How has it spread so far and so fast? It has also drawn a strong backlash of criticism - is it promoting stereotypes and paternalistic, is it promoting the wrong solution for the problems of Uganda? This panel will include perspectives from online advocacy, from video documentary, and human rights activism to ask: What can we learn from the spectacular online reach of the Kony 2012 film, what are the critiques of it from perspectives of representation and advocacy choices, and can we evaluate and prioritize these different perspectives?

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon C) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Everyone in a startup should be able to give the "elevator pitch", even the programmers! Having the right pitch can help you land a big customer, attract investors, and just explain what you do to your mom. Learn about the 3 secrets to a killer pitch from an expert speaker who has pitched at TechCrunch50, SXSW Accelerator and Ignite. Then pitch your startup and get feedback on the spot. Not for beginners! We have seen thousands of pitches and invested in hundreds of companies. Come after you’ve already practiced your pitch a 100 times and are ready to take it to the next level. First I’ll spend 15 minutes talking about the 3 secrets and show some killer examples. Then YOU get up on stage and give YOUR 90 second pitch, and then one of the panel will give YOUR pitch showing how we would improve it. If you want to pitch your startup, send a link to your 90 second pitch video to sxsw@killerelevator.com

Augmented Reality = ARPA’s Original Vision of Web
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon FG) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Using a variety of original source material, Chris Grayson will give an overview of the global network, as envisioned by thinkers at ARPA before the creation of the ARPAnet. Examples include J.C.R. Licklider's "Man-Computer Symbiosis," 1960; Douglas Engelbart's "Augmenting Human Intellect," 1962; and Ivan Sutherland's "The Ultimate Display," 1965. Some focus will also be given to the people and personalities involved. Heidi Hysell will provide the technical explanation for many milestones in the evolution of the Internet, making the case that the human interface to the network has historically been limited by the available technology, and with Augmented Reality, we are now entering an era that truly begins to deliver on the original vision.

Busting the Myth: Natural Input Requires Learning
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon H) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Dan and Kay will bust a commonly held myth: that there is some Natural way of interacting with technology, and that simply by changing modality (touch, body tracking, etc) we will eliminate the need for a UI.

They will present examples from the creation of Surface, (Kay was Design Manager and Dan the UX Architect), including footage of real users interacting with disastrously failing prototypes. They will show how years of iterative design drove to the inescapable conclusion that input is a language, one which must be created by the designer, learned by the user, and taught with a new type of UI.

You will learn how an interface can be designed to teach an input language in a natural way. Drawing from product examples such as the Palm Pilot, iPhone, and Windows 8, they will demonstrate how to design and build products people love and which use new input technologies. You will learn about the creation of user interfaces which teach new input languages in a way that seems Natural.

Creating a Mobile Wallet Worth Having
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Garden Inn (Rio Grande) (500 North IH 35, Austin, TX 78701)
With buzzwords like “NFC” and “mobile wallet” thrown about in the press ad nauseam, consumers and the mobile and financial industries are looking for who will emerge the winner in the effort to control mobile money – and there’s a great deal of money to be had if it’s done right. But as often as the mobile wallet is lauded for its convenience, it’s derided as “a solution in search of a problem.” Ultimately, in order to meet the real needs of consumers, wallet-makers need to stop focusing solely on the technologies of mobile payments, and actually look at what will drive usage: a mobile solution that is actually worth having. This doesn’t yet exist, but it could, if application developers create tools that actually change the way merchants and consumers feel, think, spend and save money. We will discuss what the true opportunity is for the mobile wallet and the elements that need to be included to move beyond technologies like NFC, to delivering the customer benefit to end users.

Developing for a Consumerized Enterprise World
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Garden Inn (Sabine) (500 North IH 35 Austin,, Texas, USA )
The consumerization of the enterprise is an emerging concept transforming the look and feel and intent of the software we use to run our businesses. It’s lowering the barriers of adoption, flipping the top-down model on its head and integrating consumer-friendly features we’ve grown to know and love in our personal lives. Gone are over-priced and complicated solutions catering to big companies with deep pockets. In are solutions that are based on an uncluttered user experience common in consumer websites, are customized for individuals, adopted bottom-up, can cater to small initial teams, yet scales as a business' needs grows. Salesforce, Dropbox and Yammer are examples of consumerized enterprise products that address small and medium business needs in customer relationship management, storage and internal communications. In this session you’ll learn how we got here, principles guiding new product design and development, and how these products impact your bottom line and culture.

Gaming Tools Kids Want to Use
Limited choices exist when kids seek to author, not just play, their own video games. If video games are on track to topple film as the last big media mammoth, how can we build a video game workforce that we need? Instead of reinforcing the divide between artists and programmers, can we get more kids interested in learning the complex work that game development involves, and foster a really great game development community? What kids like to use for game development may surprise you. Come hear what they like, why the like it, and how new tools need to be built to meet the demands of future game developers. Join a conversation about authorship, identity, creativity, and the tools kids really use for developing serious and social games. Gain insight on elements of game tools that kids would use--if they existed!

Human Language Technology and Where It's Headed
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon K) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Language is the holy grail of artificial intelligence. When we imagine sharing a world with smart machines, we don't think about logic, or problem solving, or winning at chess. We hear HAL-9000 declining to open the pod bay doors, and the Terminator saying he'll be baaack. Researchers have been working on building computers we can talk to for 60 years; in the 1990s, Bill Gates predicted that speech would soon be “a primary way of interacting with the machine”. So why aren't we talking to our computers yet ....Or are we? Thanks to new developments in human language technology (also known as "natural language processing") and text analytics, computers are analyzing everything from e-mail and tweets to clinical records and and speed-date conversations. How does the technology work, when does it work well (and when not), what's it doing for us, and where is it headed?

Music Discovery: Man vs. Machine
Spotify, Pandora, MOG, Aweditorium and many more aim to provide the ultimate experience in music discovery -- they claim to have the "winning strategy" with their unique combination of an extensive catalog, social media integration, and algorithms. But what about the human element in music discovery? Not just your friend who tells you what’s cool -- which is cool -- but real DJs, with a passion for music and the evolution of an artist. What about websites and blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum -- humans who write about music and even present the music they write about? In the age of machines, is the human dead? Is there still a need for the knowledgeable, passionate, quirky but unpredictable human? Are hybrid models like We Are Hunted and WahWah.fm the future? In "Man vs. Machine for Music Discovery" KCRW, the noted station in Los Angeles, CA will convene a diverse panel to discuss their potential for success and what they might portend for the future of man vs. machine.

Reported Aggregation: A Truce in the Content Wars?
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Sheraton Austin (Capitol EFGH) (701 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78701)
2011 was a big year for news—from the Arab Spring uprisings to the debt-ceiling meltdown, to quakes, floods hurricanes and the Republican presidential smackdown. Fortunately, the year also saw the emergence of a new approach to presenting breaking news—reported aggregation, a form that offers the chance of a truce in the battle over original reporting vs. aggregation (aka Bill Keller vs. Arianna Huffington). Reported aggregation blends curation, social media, and traditional, pick-up-the-phone-or-hit-the-streets reporting to deliver up-to-the-minute coverage of breaking news and, increasingly, ongoing coverage of in-depth stories. Successes include Andy Carvin's breathtaking Twitter feed, which combines you-are-there retweets with crowdsourced verification and original contributions, is one example; Mother Jones' highly popular explainers, which Nieman Labs called "a fascinating fusion between a liveblog and a Wikipedia page;" HuffPo's and Slate's ongoing experiments with curation/reporting blends; and more. In this session, we'll look at what makes this form so successful, share ideas and best practices, review tools that will work for even the most tech-hating hack, and discuss the potential of reported aggregation as a new gold standard for breaking news.

Transforming Social Media for the Senior Community
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 10:30am @ Omni Downtown (Capital Ballroom) (700 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701)
Today 40 million people are over 65 - the largest and fastest growing demographic in America. With Baby Boomers retiring, over 10,000 people a day turn 65, a trend that will continue over the next decade. Americans age 50+ are increasingly likely to have a cell phone, a laptop or tablet, or a game console, and represent the fastest growing age segment to adopt to social networking and hypernet technology. What’s the opportunity? A connected lifestyle that blurs boundaries across home, work, leisure, and retirement, smoothly connecting our online and offline lives. Unfortunately, this tech-enabled lifestyle is not yet widespread among older age ranges, hampered by technology choices that are complex and difficult to use. To enable a connected living and social aging experience for older consumers, vendors need to begin to design for all, and entrepreneurs and the venture community need a more dynamic relationship with this huge and underserved growth market.

What Left 4 Dead Can Teach Us About Kids Games
When creating games for children game designers often work in a vacuum. As adults, we are far removed from the developing cognitive and motor skills that are a hallmark of a growing child. Meanwhile, game dev resources tend to gloss over information on developing games for kids, often implying that the younger the child, the bigger the buttons and the shorter the words. Children, especially those under twelve, have a unique set of cognitive and physical challenges that developers must understand in order to make truly engaging games for children. In this session, we’ll cover game ideas that are developmentally appropriate for children. But this isn’t an average list of game mechanics. We’ll challenge designers to delve into their own grown-up media library to find new inspiration for all their design projects. By the time it’s all said and done, attendees will have ideas on how Left 4 Dead, FourSquare, Plants vs Zombies, and even Words with Friends can inspire great kids games.

Tuesday March 13, 2012 9:30am - 3:30pm @ Pick Up and Drop Off (Red River and Caesar Chavex Austin, TX)

Remember the Alamo? No? That's ok, we don't either - which is why our RVSX film crew and Fieldnotes brand notebooks are going to be taking the infamous RVSX bus from Austin to San Antonio so you can take note of all the Alamo has to offer. Want to come? We have room for 10, and all the Pop Chips and Jones Soda you can eat and drink - all we ask is that you donate to the Women with Drive foundation to hold your spot.

We're leaving Austin March 13th at 9:30am from the corner of Red River and Caesar Chavez Rd, right behind the convention center. We will get to the Alamo around 11:30am where we will spend a few hours checking out what exactly Santa Anna, Jim Bowie and Davie Crocket were up to all those years ago. We will leave San Antonio by 2 and be back to Austin by 4pm.

Come on, you know you want to Remember the Alamo.

The Women with Drive Foundation is a NFP that helps women get back on their feet by giving them the literal and figurative vehicle to do so. Your investment makes a direct difference in the lives of the participants! Your generosity provides the immediate relief from transportation costs, giving them the opportunity to focus on helping them help themselves. The funds collected will go toward support services, training and vehicle maintenance costs for our participants. You are making a difference!

App Empire
Keywords, colors, graphics, ads, special features, cross promotions—when it comes to apps, there are so many details that, when executed correctly, can make the difference between 1000 downloads and 100,000. As the founder of Empire Apps and co-founder of T3 Apps and Best Apps, three mobile application businesses, Chad Mureta is a veteran in the app industry. In the last 3 years, he has created 46 apps and garnered over 35 million downloads worldwide. And he did it without a background in technology. Since he conceived his first app—FingerPrint Security Pro which generated about $500,000 in revenue—Mureta has acquired a breadth of knowledge and insight into the mobile application market, learning as much from his mistakes as he did from his successes. His expertise in this relatively new business model comes from hands-on experience and his meticulous scrutiny of every aspect of developing and marketing his many apps. In this session, he’ll share secret tips and tricks for bringing a successful app to market.

Get Lucky: Putting Planned Serendipity to Work
“Get Lucky” is a manual for serendipity: what it is, how it works, and how to put it to work for you. As the pace of change accelerates around our businesses and the sheer volume of information explodes, we're under incredible pressure to connect just in time with the people and ideas we need to thrive, even when we don’t know who they are or where they might be. This uncertainty isn’t a problem, however—it brings tremendous opportunities, but only if we embrace one of the most important drivers of success in the modern economy: serendipity. Serendipity isn’t an abstract, magical notion—it can be planned. Though we can’t know exactly when serendipity will strike, we can foster the conditions for it to occur early and often. Luck isn’t lucky—it's learnable. This session will show you how the world’s most admired businesses have applied the 8 essential skills of serendipity.

Dig Deep: Libraries, Archives and Filmmaking
There is a lot of information out on the open web, but it can be difficult to sort through, and you don't always know how reliable it is. In this session, a variety of electronic database retrieval experts will guide you through the ins and outs of navigating the hundreds of reputable sources available in your local public and/or university library as well as the information in local and national archives. Librarians and archivists can help you find historical data when preparing the first draft of a screenplay; track down drawings and photographs to make sure your costumes are accurate; tap into new funding and grant possibilities; and traverse the difficult terrain of public records and documents. Learn new search strategies and tips that can benefit all aspects and stages of filmmaking. From pre- to post-production, librarians and archivists can help make your limited budget work for you rather than against you.

The Not So Sexy Side Of Music For Film & TV
You have songs in your film that you need to license, but you have no idea how to get a quote, who to ask, and where to go. Sound familiar? Nowadays, independent filmmakers have to wear many hats, and understanding the basics of music licensing are a must. Whether you are submitting a project to festivals, streaming online or seeking distribution, music clearance is essential (YES, even if the artist says it’s OK).

In the world of licensing music for Film & TV, the sexy side, or creative side, seems to get a lot of the attention whereas the not-so-sexy side, or the business side, is somewhat daunting and unfamiliar. This panel will focus on making the business side of music in film more sexy and appealing. The panelists will discuss the many issues that one can encounter when clearing and licensing music, including: best practices to follow, avoiding disputes, resolving misunderstandings and possible legal action, and all of the paperwork required for your deliverables package.

3D Printing: Not Everyone Will Be Excited
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00am - 12:00pm @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon J) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
If the growth of the internet taught us anything, it is that not everyone welcomes exciting, disruptive technologies. Impacted industries like film and music demanded that Congress protect them from the internet. In the near future, companies disrupted by the widespread adoption of 3D printing could set off a new wave of DRM and intellectual property (IP) expansion. To understand how this might happen, first you need to understand how IP law applies to things that can be 3D printed. Can you copyright a hammer? Can you patent a sculpture? After explaining how IP applies to objects coming out of a 3D printer, this talk will highlight steps being taken to protect 3D printing from being strangled in Washington, DC.

Agile Apps: Effective Mobile & Native Development
As the rise of iOS, Android, and the Mac App Store brings more web developers into the world of native applications can our existing processes and best practices survive the transition? How can we release early and often in an environment where each update must pass through a review process? How do we aggressively refactor code when outdated clients must be supported? Can we iterate efficiently on features when design changes require more than a stylesheet update? A group of experienced web, mobile, and native app designers and developers will discuss our experiences working on native applications. We will explain what unexpected challenges we encountered coming from a web background, what strategies have helped us design and develop native applications, what did not work, and what we should learn from experienced native application developers.

Beyond a Thousand Words: Accessible Complex Data
Our world is becoming increasingly intelligent, interconnected, and instrumented, resulting in massive amounts of data being collected. This data is a treasure trove of information that can be mined to improve service, increase sales, or make operations more efficient. Analysis of such large amounts of data, often called analytics, is increasingly desired by governments and businesses alike. Yet getting useful information from such large amounts of data is a daunting task. Analytics often relies on real-time visual renderings that allow users to quickly spot trends and gain insights. These visual renderings tend to be complex charts (bar, line, scatter, or bubble charts, timelines, node diagrams, etc.) or editable node diagrams. Visual charts can be challenging to understand, especially for persons with disabilities. This presentation describes some of the accessibility challenges of charts, large datasets, and node diagrams and some techniques to make them more accessible and usable by people with disabilities.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00am - 12:00pm @ Sheraton Austin (Creekside I & II) (701 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78701)
The Internet today consists of a morass of partial and redundant content: the ~17m businesses and POI in the US, for example, are duplicated over 1.2 billion website across over 5 million domains. This tangle of duplicate, fragmentary, and often incorrect information ensures that unequivocally identifying a person, place or thing on the Internet will always be a challenge. The members of this panel are working to fix this, and will discuss their projects in the Library, Government, and Big Data sectors to create an Internet where real-world people, places, and things can be referenced unambiguously. It focuses on pragmatic, real-world examples: the panelists from Factual, the Sunlight Foundation, Jetpac, and the Internet Archive each highlight their specific experiences in creating platforms and apps that identify and disambiguate individual entities across applications and verticals, and describe both the pitfalls and benefits of working towards an Internet of Entities.

Digital Divas: How Girls Rule the Digital Universe
How can brands in low-interest, low-involvement categories truly engage women in the digital space? Which of women’s digital activities are purchase decision drivers vs. distractors? What do women really want from brands online? Ogilvy, Microsoft and Mindshare teamed up to tackle those questions and more with “Digital Divas,” a groundbreaking study of more than 12,800 women that reveals how the Venus-Mars analogy extends into the digital sphere: how women vs. men live and breathe online and what that means for brands. "Digital Divas" makes sense of the daunting deluge of data on women in the digital domain to tell the story of how women seek, share and shop across channels. We’ll discuss and debate some hot topics, like why women really “like” brands on Facebook and what a “like” is truly worth. We’ll share some surprising new digital developments, like what surpassed peer recommendations and store coupons in 2011 to become the No. 1 influencer of women’s online purchase decisions. And we’ll illustrate how even the least sexy brands are connecting with, captivating and cashing in on women in the digital domains they rule.

Federal agencies have recently been given the authority by Congress to sponsor competitions for individuals, groups, and companies to develop new ideas and technology innovations for a chance to win potentially lucrative prizes. These competitions can range from new mobile outreach technologies to web-based data analytics tools to even vehicle-to-vehicle communications; the government is looking for breakthrough technologies from the minds of the most innovative and forward thinking Americans, many of whom are at SXSW. This session will highlight some of the coolest prizes for technology development that the government has been involved in to date, including the DOT’s Connected Vehicle Challenge, the VA’s Open Source and blue button projects, and NASA’s centennial challenges. Hackathons: Kickstart a Movement from a Weekend
It all happened so quickly: you arrived at the hack-a-thon, got excited, met interesting people, came up with a great idea, built a prototype (in less than 12 hours) and presented to an adoring crowd. Then everyone went home. Slept. Ate. And lost momentum...Hackathons are evolving: from a room filled only with developers, to rooms full of social innovators -- developers, designers, planners, journalists, civic leaders and more -- coming together to address pressing urban issues (transportation, community development, energy use etc). This is exciting, and produces potentially groundbreaking ideas. But too often, the hackathon finishes and projects never see the light of day. The good news, is that it is relatively easy to turn these 48-hour geek-chic fests into events with lasting impact. This conversation will allow hacker organizations, government, businesses and citizens to discuss the value of hackathons and how to leverage them to kick-start change-making movements in cities.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00am - 12:00pm @ Hilton Austin Downtown (Salon H) (500 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
Social media includes lots of free-form textual data in "natural languages", the languages people speak. Natural Language Processing (NLP) helps you analyze that data. Some NLP problems are very hard, but a number of lightweight NLP techniques are available in open-source tools. You can use these to improve your social media applications, even if you're not a computational linguist. In this session, I will introduce some of these techniques and tools, and I will give hints on getting started using NLP in your social media applications. Many NLP techniques require training corpora, sets of annotated documents. I will talk about constructing and maintaining a training corpus. And, I will talk about some of the ways we use NLP at Lithium Technologies.

Philanthropy for Everyone: Community Grantmaking
Philanthropy is changing. Social change makers face continuing economic uncertainty. Government programs are downsizing. And traditional grantmakers can be hard to reach, requiring long proposal and reporting cycles. Despite these challenges, exciting new trends in giving and fundraising are on the rise. The new philanthropy is driven by the DIY maker ethic, powered by social media, and draws on both entrepreneurial and good, old school community organizing practices. Everyone knows Kickstarter's crowdfunding model, but there is so much more to the story. Awesome Foundation chapters worldwide are launching crazy brilliant ideas, $1,000 at a time. Kiva Detroit brings micro-lending strategies back home from the developing world, while Detroit Soup brings people together for dinner and fundraising. The Next Generation Giving Project is a group of cross-class people under 40 years old collectively raising $100,000+ and granting it to social change organizations in the Northwest. This is just the start, and anyone can do it. Come meet the new face of philanthropy, learn about innovative models -- the tough lessons and the best practices. Connecting the power of social media with commerce should be a no brainer -- the next chapter in eCommerce. Indeed, Facebook has shown that people are 4x more likely to buy something when it's recommended by a friend and 10x more likely to buy a deal after a friend buys it. But despite all this intuitive rightness, it doesn't appear to be taking off like Zynga games. This panel will explore the boundaries of social commerce -- it's a popular meme but what is it really? How are the big ecommerce players looking at this big opportunity? And what big things are already happening in this next chapter of online commerce?Local and Social also go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly. This panel will also explore the local aspects of social commerce, which touches mobile, geo-location, check-ins, deals and good old fashion local businesses.

Software patents have a mixed reputation. They make some millions, are labeled a scourge by others, and are generally just overlooked or misunderstood by the general public. In the end, it's an open question whether they drive innovation or hamper it.The panel will discuss patent issues as relating to startups and emerging technologies. Topics covered include: Whether acquiring patents makes sense, issues about building on third-party platforms, the growth of patent litigation, and the relationship between patents and innovation; relying on real-world examples when possible.Julie Samuels of EFF will discuss an emerging trend of suing startups over patents. If you could only get inside your customer's head, it would be so much easier to get them to buy on your website. Fortunately, there are several powerful psychological tricks that you can use to convince your prospects to buy from you and help them smoothly make it through the purchase process. This presentation will dive into the psychological principles that are being used effectively by e-commerce websites in both B2C and B2B selling. Who Needs a Fashion Cycle? I've Got Social Media
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:00am - 12:00pm @ Driskill Hotel (Citadel) (604 Brazos Street, Austin, TX 78701)

The traditional cycles of fashion trends, consumer buying patterns and clothing manufacturing no longer exist in the fashion industry – fashion is ‘now’ in all its capacity and its current pace brings with it a variety of side effects. A traditional fashion cycle refers to the processes of adoption and rejection of a particular trend/activity etc. We will discuss how this definition has evolved in the today’s fashion digital era. We will investigate how digital and technological developments have affected today’s fashion industry from a media, consumer and retail perspective. We will assess the growing importance of social gaming and community to the fashion industry. We will examine social shopping, instant gratification and the saturated world of fashion information and moving trends. In conclusion, we will discuss whether we will be able to sustain the current consumption of information and flow of material and how best to operate in this new world.

It’s 1971 and communes and new religions are on the rise. The Source Family are an "Aquarian tribe," a secretive but outlandish group of 140 beautiful young people who stroll Los Angeles in colorful robes, devotees of “Father Yod,” a controversial restaurateur-turned-spiritual leader with fourteen wives and his own psychedelic rock band. The Family lives in a mansion and operates a popular restaurant on the Sunset Strip, serving vegetarian cuisine to musicians and movie stars, pioneering a national trend. But their radical lifestyle instigates the authorities. Their demise is dramatic and painful, but Yod’s spirit lives on.

Bay of All Saints
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:15am - 12:30pm @ Alamo Lamar B (1120 South Lamar Blvd)

In Bahia, Brazil, generations of impoverished families live in palafitas, shacks built on stilts over the ocean bay. When the government threatens to reclaim the bay in the name of ecological restoration, hundreds of families are about to lose their homes. "Bay of All Saints" is a lyrical portrait of three single-mothers living in the water slums during this crisis. Their individual stories of poverty unfold through visits from Norato, their big-hearted refrigerator repairman, born and raised in the palafitas. As these women rise to fight for their future, they begin to see the bay in a whole new light.

"Dreams of a Life" is an imaginative and multilayered quest to go beyond the newspaper reports and solve the mystery of who thirty-eight year old Joyce Vincent was and why she lay undiscovered for three years after her death in one of the busiest parts of London. Joyce Vincent died in her bedsit above Shopping City in Wood Green. Nobody noticed. Nearly three years later, her flat was forced into by authorities due to lack of rent payment. Her skeleton was found surrounded by Christmas presents that she was in the process of wrapping. Her television was still on.

With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of artist: the indie game designer. These innovators design and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they may find connection and success. After years of work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes work toward the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy. At a big video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, FEZ. Designer Jonathan Blow considers a new game after his very successful game, Braid. Four developers, three games, one ultimate goal— to express oneself through a video game.

Vivan las Antipodas
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 11:30am - 1:14pm @ Violet Crown 2 (434 W 2nd St)

What would be the shortest route between Entre Ríos in Argentina and the Chinese metropolis Shanghai? Simply a straight line through the center of the earth, since the two places are antipodes: they are located diametrically opposite to each other on the earth’s surface. During his visits to four such antipodal pairs, the award-winning documentary filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky captured images that turn our view of the world upside down. These antipodes seem mythically connected, somehow united by their oppositeness. Kossakovsky’s movie is a feast for the senses, a fascinating kaleidoscope of our planet. ¡VIVAN LAS ANTIPODAS! – Long Live The Antipodes! Presented with the support of AMBULANTE

A Conversation with Cliff Martinez
Cliff Martinez began as a drummer for unconventional bands such as The Weirdos, The Dickies, Captain Beefheart & The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The desire to not wear a sock on his genitals at age 40 and an interest in new technologies led Martinez toward the world of film music. His first film was Steven Soderbergh’s first theatrical release (sex, lies, and videotape) and led to a longstanding collaboration with the director on films such as Kafka, The Limey, Traffic, Solaris & 2011’s Contagion.

Perhaps it is because of his time in the punk rock scene that Martinez’s scoring approach is nontraditional. His scores tend towards the sparse, utilizing a modern tonal palette to paint the backdrop for films that are often dark & psychological like Pump Up the Volume, Narc, Wonderland, Wicker Park, & Drive. Join Cliff as he discusses his body of work and techniques for keeping the sock from slipping off.

2012: Social Media’s New Role in Politics
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ AT&T Conference Hotel (Salon A) (1900 University Ave, Austin, TX 78705)
Social media has earned a prominent seat at the table with the large media companies of the world and has birthed an entirely new way to cover the world of politics. As we approach the electoral year, political chatter will continue to snowball and generate enormous heaps of data. Data can drastically impact how we determine the importance of a given story, the ways that we gauge public opinion and eventually may even revolutionize the way we cast our votes. This panel will discuss the many ways that the web is providing entirely new tools and resources to track and cover the world of politics and discuss the unique perspective social media data paints for the voice of a bolder and broader demographic. This panel will feature experts in political news, new media, data crunching and the real-time web debating the future of political coverage and the impact of new social technologies on political news and research.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Sheraton Austin (Creekside I & II) (701 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78701)

The Internet has made everyone a publisher. Even brands are now doing what used to solely be the domain of media companies: creating compelling content. Great content is being used to gain fans, inform customers and increase exposure on the Internet. This panel will discuss the principles of successful viral content - whether articles, infographics or videos and how companies can apply these to branded content. And we're talking about more than just slapping your logo on a pie chart. We'll discuss how to get started, measure results and set goals, as well as the importance of a consistent strategy. You've heard the phrase "content is king" over and over again; this panel will show how and why.

Breaking Down Walls, a Decentralised Social Web?

12:30pm

Can Social Music Save the Music Industry?
Can making the musical experience more social and shareable help the music industry survive? The degree to which any new digital music company will be successful will be based on their ability to engage people. Music is a social construct, and while people still sit at home listening to music alone, they are more likely to share their music experiences if given the tools.
The cloud has enabled people to do much more with music from interacting with the art, songs, and ephemera around their music, to being able to create their own content and layers around their music discoveries.
Will rich social functions - discovery, visualization, playlists, interactivity, maybe even game aspects, coupled with ease of use around multiple connected devices (i.e., go seamlessly from computer to phone to car to living room), find enough success to save the music industry?
This panel will investigate the different social and interactivity tools the music industry can use to add to their bottom line.

    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Sheraton Austin (Capitol View North) (701 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78701)
For magazine editors today, the delivery of digital content is an undeniable reality, and a terrific opportunity. Digital platforms–the web, tablets, and mobile–allow editors to take their magazines to places they’ve never been before. In this conversation, Lucky Editor-in-Chief, Brandon Holley, and The New Yorker’s Deputy Editor, Pamela Maffei McCarthy, will explore the new magazine landscape. How do editors make the leap from print magazines to multi-platform brands? Holley and McCarthy will explore the evolution of the editorial process –from article choice and presentation to workflow issues to the role of social media—as well as the changes in their audiences’ expectations. Holley, formerly Editor-in-Chief of Jane magazine who also launched Yahoo! Shine, has extensive experience working primarily for younger brands as well as digital environments. McCarthy first worked on reconceiving iconic titles for new eras as Managing Editor of Vanity Fair and Executive Editor of Esquire.

Facebook Credits: Not Just for Virtual Goods
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Omni Downtown (Capital Ballroom) (700 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701)
Facebook Credits, the social network's virtual currency, at first was only used as a payment method for virtual goods in social games. However, with Facebook now that all Facebook Games exclusively use Credits for payments, more users are maintaining a balance of Credits, and more users want them. This has opened new business and marketing opportunities. Content owners can license streaming access or downloads of their content in exchange for Facebook Credits. Meanwhile, ecommerce companies can reward users with Credits for marking purchases or signing up for email lists. Representatives of companies pioneering the use of Facebook Credits outside of social games will discuss the current state of Facebook Credits and their typical uses, explain how virtual currencies are already disrupting several industries, and debate which types of transactions are the next to be changed by the emergence of a virtual currency that is in demand and cheap to distribute.

Flash: F Bomb or Da Bomb?
Flash. For some, it’s Da Bomb—the Holy Grail of interactive web design. For others, it’s the F Bomb—the virtual thorn in their web experience. Flash has been, for years, a tool programmers have gone to in order to create a more interactive online experience. However, those who are blind/visually impaired and SEO experts have long railed against Flash’s usability issues. Screen readers can’t read it, and neither can Google when Flash is improperly programmed. Join our panelists for a lively discussion on Flash—from the frustrations encountered by the blind to the developer’s belief that it’s THE tool to have in their arsenal. Phillip Gross, a blind, life-long technology geek; Kristine Schachinger, SEO and accessibility expert and owner of SitesWithoutWalls.com; and David Greene, owner of Creative Spark and long-time programmer, will discuss the benefits and disadvantages of using Flash. Anyone who interacts with Flash should attend this debate on how to use and how not to use Flash.

Getting Experts on to Your Passion Project
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Courtyard Marriott (Rio Grande Ballroom) (300 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
I've spent the last year working on a game and project to disrupt international development. I built an incredible team of advisors, developers, designers, nonprofits, and supporters around simply an idea, and around a person who had never completed a similar project. Furthermore--they donated their services in the beginning for free! This core conversation will talk about how to rally the best talent around an idea, even if you've never met them (and if the idea ultimately changes or fails).I'll also address diving into tech and gaming, only having a background in online publishing, music, and international relations. I'll talk about motivation, never giving up, and why projects like this are some of the best ways to address global issues and drive innovation. Finally--I'll close on how the project came together (and ultimately changed) and why everyone should have a passion project. Don't be afraid to fail...dive in!

Harnessing the Power of the Benevolent Internet
Despite the mainstream portrayal of the web as a den of pedophiles and hackers, the Internet is capable of doing a whole lot of good. Panelists Alexis Ohanian (co-founder of Reddit; founder of Breadpig), Dan McComas and Jessica Moreno (founders, RedditGifts), Christina Xu (founder, Institute on Higher Awesome Studies; co-founder, ROFLCon), and Zach Walker (Donor Relations Manager, DonorsChoose.org) will give the low-down on the benevolent side of the hivemind. From communities of pizza-sending well-wishers to campaigns that generate hundreds of thousands of dollars and tons of attention for nonprofits, this panel will examine and discuss the unexpected phenomenon of strangers helping each other (and the world) en masse. We’ll debate whether these actions make a real impact and lead to long-term engagement, identify the unique benefits (and disadvantages) of pseudonymous grassroots philanthropy, give tips on getting your very own do-goodery snowball rolling, and show you so many heartwarming stories that you’ll think someone is cutting onions.

How Technology Is Killing (or Saving) the Lecture

PowerPoint is boring. Today, professors are letting students pass virtual notes in class on Twitter. They're trying "clickers" that turn classrooms into game shows. They're videotaping classes to let students watch lecture reruns to cram for the test, or to share the knowledge with the world on YouTube. They're monitoring how many minutes students spend reading online textbooks to see who needs help. This session will explore some surprising ways tech is changing classroom dynamics and leading to the end of the lecture as we know it. While enthusiasts see the high-tech changes as a needed upgrade to a model that is hundreds of years old, others see dangers ahead. Is all that gear a distraction? Is academic freedom threatened when Web tools and video make public the once-sacred space of the classroom?Participants are asked to watch a 5-minute video (chronicle.com/lecturefail) before attending the talk, which will serve as a starting for an interactive presentation and discussion.

Language Technology and the Clinical Narrative
Electronic health records have the potential for enormous good, but in order for them to live up to their full potential, information about patients -- their symptoms, diagnoses, allergic reactions, medical backgrounds, family histories -- must take the form of standardized, structured, easy-to-manipulate data. One obvious way to get there is to tightly structure the way that doctors create the medical record. As a result, physicians are under increasing pressure to abandon unrestricted natural language and the clinical narrative, and turn the medical documentation process into a jungle of pull-down menus, checkboxes, and restricted vocabularies. In this presentation I argue that the results could be catastrophic, I make the case for preserving the clinical narrative, and I argue for a practical way out of the dilemma: using natural language processing technology to produce the structured records we need, while still allowing physicians the freedom of unrestricted clinical language.

In the intersecting worlds of music and social, how are startups and artists working together to enhance the music experience? By embracing mobile and social networks, bands are able to connect with their fans and interact with them directly. Companies like GroupMe, Mobile Roadie and GetGlue provide platforms for direct communication between fans and music labels, artists and festivals, fans use them to pull in info about their favorites and share the experience with their friends. This Week in Digital Podcast
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 12:30pm - 1:30pm @ Driskill Hotel (Maximilian) (604 Brazos Street, Austin, TX 78701)
In 2015, analysts estimate worldwide sales of 3 million hybrid and electric cars and light trucks – and almost 100 million electric scooters and bikes. EVs represent more than just a different way to turn the wheels on the family car – they are a wholesale re-thinking of consumer mobility, introducing cars that have as much in common with your smartphone and your laptop as they do with the car in your garage right now. Questions are inevitable, of course. How should an electric car behave? How should manufacturers prepare consumers for the differences in owning, driving and maintaining it? What responsibilities should marketers and product managers take on to help this market take off? And will the EV “cool factor” taper off or continue to grow? Whatever the answers to these questions, it is clear that the electric vehicle will be a connected vehicle. And that mobile, social, and local technologies will be key to shaping vehicles as they move from prototype to production. Join Mike O’Toole, PJA President and host of PJA Radio, for a provocative discussion that gets to the heart of the probable and probes the limits of the possible. Mike will be joined by Robert Davis, PJA’s SVP for Digital Marketing and Matt Magee, VP of Digital Strategy, and guests from Ford, GM and other players out to “make the EV market” will share their opinions and insights as well.

Maximizing Film Revenues
Independent filmmakers are caught up in an environment of shifting revenue sources. Once reliable revenue sources, such as DVD, cable and broadcasting, are eroding and being replaced by the growing although uncertain VOD, streaming and internet sales markets. Filmmakers must be savvier than ever to maximize their revenues.
This panel will shine a light on new and old sources of revenues for independent films and explore the future of revenues for independent films. The panel will discuss the revenue terms of distribution agreements and discuss: how to negotiate to maximize revenues, terms relating to recoupable costs, how to split rights among distributors and avoid pitfalls when structuring split rights deals, how definitions of rights and markets in one distribution agreement can conflict with other distribution contracts for the same film, accounting clauses, auditing and collections.

WONDER WOMEN! The Untold Story of American Superheroines
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 2:00pm - 3:05pm @ Alamo Ritz 1 (320 East 6th St)

"WONDER WOMEN! The Untold Story of American Superheroines" traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, WONDER WOMEN! looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. "WONDER WOMEN!" goes behind the scenes with Lynda Carter, Lindsay Wagner, comic writers and artists, and real life superheroines such as Gloria Steinem, Shelby Knox and others who offer an enlightening and entertaining counterpoint to the male dominated superhero genre.

Three young boys act as our wide-eyed conduits to a parade of entertainers and revelers as they dance through the lamp lit streets and doorways of the Crescent City. From dusk to dawn, from Rampart to the river, we explore the lives and locales of one of the world's most unique cities. Paul Williams Still Alive
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 2:00pm - 3:24pm @ Stateside Theatre (719 Congress Ave)

In the seventies, Paul Williams wrote hits like “We’ve Only Just Begun” "Evergreen" and “Rainbow Connection." He starred in Battle for the Planet of the Apes and on Johnny Carson’s couch and then, he kind of disappeared. Williams struck a chord with many, including director Stephen Kessler--who found him. Paul Williams Still Alive is both a rollicking pop-culture flashback and the humorous journey of an awkward documentarian and his reluctant subject. Yet it ultimately evolves into the touching tale of a man who has made peace with the beast that fame and celebrity awoke.

WE ARE LEGION: The Story of the Hacktivists
    Tuesday March 13, 2012 2:00pm - 3:29pm @ Vimeo Theater (501 East 4th St)

"WE ARE LEGION: The Story of the Hacktivists" takes us inside the world of Anonymous, the radical "hacktivist" collective that has redefined civil disobedience for the digital age. The film explores early hacktivist groups like Cult of the Dead Cow and Electronic Disturbance Theater, then moves to Anonymous' raucous beginnings on the website 4chan. Through interviews with current members, people recently returned from prison or facing trial, writers, academics, activists and major players in various "raids," the documentary traces Anonymous’ evolution from merry pranksters to a full-blown movement with a global reach, the most transformative civil disobedience of our time.

Simultaneously an exploration of nature and psyche, 'In The Pines' documents a young woman's hunt for extraterrestrial meaning. Following a mysteriously purposeful hike through the Olympic Mountains, this film roots itself in the Pacific Northwest. It delves deep into the texture of the scene by carefully playing with macro photography, resulting in the synchronized examination of character and setting.
